“C” Drive: The hard drive.
Bit: A binary zero or one that is used as a part of a piece of data.
Byte: Eight bits; a full piece of data.
Control Panel: A file folder that holds icons that allow us to change each of the system attributes.
Desktop: The screen view of the computer when the computer starts.
Format Painter: An MS Word function that allows us to copy and paste formatting, independent of the text from which it is
copied.
Home Page: The first page that opens in our web browser.
Hyperlink: A link that jumps us to another site when we click on it.
Internet Explorer: A web browser owned by Microsoft.
Firefox: A web browser created by the Mozilla foundation.
Google Chrome: A web browser created by Google (this is not Google and should not be confused with it).
Google: A search engine owned by Google.
Bing: A search engine owned by Microsoft.
Kilo: Thousand.
Mega: Million.
Giga: Billion.
Tera: Trillion.
Nano: One Billionth.
Menu Bar: A tool bar in some programs that is just below the Title bar. It holds menu items for changing a window’s or
application’s attributes. The Menu Bar is not to be confused with the Ribbon in MS Word.
This PC Folder: A folder that holds icons for all of the computers drives.
Refresh Button (In an Web Browser): A toolbar button that refreshes the web page.
Scroll Bars: Bars on either the right or bottom of a window that allow us to move the contents of the window either vertically
or horizontally.
System Tray: An area on the far right of the taskbar that holds the system clock, and other icons for programs that are running
in the background.
Taskbar: The bottom blue bar on the desktop that holds the Start button, the System Tray and Program Buttons.
Title Bar: The top blue bar in any window that holds the name of the window on the left and the Minimize, Maximize and
Close buttons on the right.
File Explorer: A view of all the computer’s files in a hierarchical form.
CPU: Central Processing Unit. This is a computer chip that acts as the computer’s main processor.
Charm Bar: A hidden Windows toolbar located on the right side of the Desktop which holds Windows 8.1 system settings.
