Womenspace BILINGUAL SHELTER ADVOCATE Posting: April 12, 2010 Position is open until filled. Job Description Work as a part of a team providing advocacy-based counseling, information and referrals for shelter residents, assist with children¹s activities, help sort and organize donated goods, errands, laundry and basic upkeep of the shelter. 30-35 hours/week, including nights and weekends, $ 11.50/hour, plus medical benefits, paid sick and vacation leave, Health Trust Fund. General Responsibilities 1. Orients new residents to communal living and shelter life; sees that paperwork to be completed and/or signed by residents is done so properly; Conducts short intakes of women in shelter, properly documenting each; 2. Assists co directors by providing women in shelter with one-on-one supportive/options counseling in such areas as goal planning, domestic violence education, safety planning, etc.; 3. Provides hotline callers with crisis and supportive counseling, information and referrals, and assistance with safety planning; 4. Screens and admits hotline callers seeking shelter for domestic violence, properly documenting relevant information; 5. Facilitates house meetings (as applicable); 6. Assists in facilitating process by which women exit the shelter, including checking rooms for readiness for the next woman and conducting exit interviews; 7. Communicates/reviews each woman¹s activities at every shift change 8. Manages confidential information appropriately. Bilingual Responsibilities 1. Conduct in-depth client intake interviews with victims of domestic violence with monolingual and/or bilingual Spanish speaking clients 2. Provide information to shelter clients to Spanish-speaking victims of domestic violence about legal remedies and resources, including information about the immigration process and the availability of Protective Orders. 3. Provide information to Spanish-speaking victims of domestic violence about available community services and agencies. Provide follow-up services and referrals to clients. 4. Develop and maintain relationships with service providers within the Latino/Hispanic community. 5. Advocate on behalf of monolingual Spanish speaking clients with representatives of the criminal justice system and accompany clients to criminal proceedings when necessary. REQUIREMENTS: 1. Must be fluent in Spanish. 2. Experience working with survivors of domestic violence preferred. 3. Familiarity with immigration processes preferred. 4. Must understand the issues facing Spanish speaking foreign-born victims of domestic violence and have experience, knowledge and understanding of the role of a survivor¹s culture and ethnicity. 5. Must have excellent judgment and strong interpersonal skills. Must be well organized, creative, empathetic, and people oriented. 6. Must be flexible and a team player. 7.
