Force systems; vector analysis of forces, moments and couples in 2 and 3 dimensions. Equilibrium of force
systems. Analysis of structures; plane trusses and frames. Distributed force system. Centroids and composite
bodies. Area moments of inertia. Friction.

II. Course Objectives
Upon completion of this course the student will:
o Be aware of the importance and applications of statics.
o Be able to draw free-body diagrams of bodies, structures and frames
o Be able to calculate forces and moments and find their resultant in 2-dimensional and 3dimensional problems using both scalar and vector methods
o Be able to analyze determinate structures and frames using equilibrium conditions
o Understand the concept of and be able to determine center of mass and moment of inertia of simple
and composite bodies
o Understand friction phenomena and solve friction-related problems in statics
