1. PROFILE
Assoc Prof Ir Dr Sharifah Rafidah Wan Alwi, CEng, MIChemE, MIEM, is the Director of Process Systems
Engineering Centre (PROSPECT) of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM). Sharifah has been extensively
involved in 28 research projects (worth RM2.4Million), 18 industrial based projects for various companies and
government agencies and has trained engineers from more than 100 companies in the field of energy and water
minimisation. She specialises in process systems engineering with emphasis on resource conservation. She
has more than 140 publications consisting of refereed journals (60), book (1), scopus-indexed conference
papers (15), refereed conference proceeding (59), magazine articles (4), book chapters (4) and monographs
(5). The 2012 Elsevier’s Scival Spotlight has ranked her in the fifth place among the list of global experts under
the category of Distinguished Competency of optimization, cost and water.
She is currently the Editor Advisory Board for Applied Thermal Engineering Journal (Impact Factor of 2.624, Q1)
and International Journal of Higher Education and Sustainability. She has been involved as the Guest Editor for
Journal of Cleaner Production (Impact factor of 3.590, Q1), Asia-Pacific Journal of Chemical Engineering
(Impact factor of 0.623, Q3) and e-PERINTIS Journal. She is a continuous reviewer for more than 14
international journals and has been appointed as international scientific and technical committee for several
international conferences.
Dr Sharifah has filed 10 patents, 14 copyrights and developed 5 software products. Two of the software
products have been commercialsed with current sale of RM16,000. Her team have recently incorporated a
UTM Spin-off company called Optimal Systems Engineering Sdn Bhd (OPTIMISE) on October 2014. They are
currently in the process of licencing three of their software products technology know-how i.e. Optimal Audit,
Optimal Heat and Optimal Water under the spin-off company.
Sharifah received her PhD at the age of 26 from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), making her one of the two
youngest PhD holders in Malaysia at that time. She was awarded the Maal Hijrah 2008 (New Year of 2008)
Award – Glorious Achievement by the Sarawak state government and the Excellent Service Award by UTM.
Her PhD work on water minimisation has won the 2008 Prince Sultan Abdul Aziz International Water Award,
Urban Water Demand Management Category. She also won the Green Talents 2009 award from the Federal
Ministry of Research Germany for her excellence in environmental research and was also among the five
shortlisted candidates for IChemE Young Engineer Award 2009. In 2011, she was awarded Highly
Commended Sir Frederick Warner Prize 2011 from IChemE UK. She was also selected as one of the finalist
for Research Award - Tokoh Penyelidik (Researcher Icon) UTM 2010 and Malaysia National Young Scientist
Award 2012. In 2013, she was awarded “Computers and Chemical Engineering most downloaded paper
(2013)”. Just recently, she was awarded the ASEAN Young Scientist and Technologist Award (AYSTA
2014) and PhosAgro/UNESCO/IUPAC Research Grant in Green Chemistry 2014.
She also serves as the Deputy Chairman for Malaysia IChemE Young Engineer Group (YEG) and is a member
of Young Scientist Network, Academy of Sciences Malaysia (YSN-ASM) and Persatuan Saintis Muslim Malaysia
(PERINTIS). She is a certified ASEAN Energy Management Scheme (AEMAS) Energy Manager trainer and a
Registered Electrical Energy Manager under Malaysia Energy Commissioner. For 2015, she was selected as
one of the President of The 18th International Conference Process Integration, Modelling and Optimisation for
Energy Saving and Pollution Reduction (PRES 2015), one of process systems engineering main stream
international conference which has typically been organised in Europe since 1998.
