The next FINT workshop will be held in Madrid, Spain, on January 18 & 19 in 2010. See notice below. Please send your items for the next Edition to the Editor (r.zolin@qut.edu.au) anytime. Please feel encouraged to forward this newsletter and to pass additional email addresses for the mailing list on to the Editor. Your news not included here? Tell the Editor about it! FINT Membership: If you have an interest in trust research, you are invited to join FINT and get free access to our resources website. Call for Papers: MOR Deadline extended to 1 February, 2009 Management and Organization Review Special Issue on ‘Building, Maintaining and Repairing Trust across Cultures’ Guest Editors: John Child, University of Birmingham, UK Graham Dietz, Durham University, UK Nicole Gillespie, University of Melbourne, Australia Peter Li, California State University, Stanislaus, US Mark N. K. Saunders, Oxford Brookes University, UK Denise Skinner, Coventry University, UK Submission Deadline: February 1, 2009 Within the work setting, changes in work relationships and patterns (e.g., virtual teams, flatter hierarchies) and changes in societal expectations have accorded trust much greater significance in recent years. Yet, it remains 1 1 unclear how trust is built, maintained and repaired across multiple interacting cultural groups of influence such as nations, industries, professions and organizations, as well as sub-cultures within organizations, and cultures based in ethnic and religious differences. Trust is understood to be central to human and group relations, and lies at the very foundation of society and civilization. Extant research and theory highlights how trust facilitates effective organizational performance through enhancing and enabling cooperation among disparate parties, open information sharing, mutual influence and acceptance, problem solving, commitment and job satisfaction, as well as a range of individual, group and organizational performance outcomes. The changing nature of organizations, their markets, employment patterns, and the social and political environments within which they operate necessitates an increased need for effective relationship building across different cultural groups or spheres. In particular, the increasing globalization of trade and transfers of capital and labour has meant that complex interdependencies within and between different organizations are developing, in the form of partnerships, networks and cross-boundary joint ventures. Trust is believed to be particularly important for success in complex environments characterized by high ambiguity and uncertainty, such as cross-cultural collaborations, yet the place and role of contextual ‘culture’ variables has, as yet, received limited attention, and the evidence presented thus far reports conflicting results. With this special issue of MOR, we seek to further our understanding of trust and the ways in which it is built, maintained and repaired across cultures. We use the term culture in its broadest sense to encompass national, organizational, professional and industry cultures. Exploration of the issues relating to trust can, and do, take place in many settings and from a range of theoretical stances (e.g., economic, psychological, sociological). Rather than focusing on trust in a particular setting (e.g., public or private sector), we welcome contributions that address the theme of enabling trust across a broad range of cultural groups. The cross-cultural dimension of trust processes is critical to this special issue. It is intended that successful papers will add significantly to our understanding of the formation, maintenance and repair of trust within and across different cultures. In keeping with the mission of MOR, papers addressing issues of trust in the Chinese context or that compare China to other cultural contexts would be very welcome. We invite submissions that address but are not limited to the following issues: a) Trust at the interface of culturally distinct organizations. This might include business-to-business trust, as well as trust between business and other organizations, such as trade unions, government, the European Union, public sector organizations (e.g., public–private sector partnerships), religious bodies and professional networks. b) Trust between organizational sub-cultures. Topics of interest here would include trust between organizational subcultures, hierarchies or professional subgroups. c) The capacity of cultures to facilitate trust within and between organizations. How do cultures and organizations promote or impede trust? d) How individuals accommodate and respond to the multiple cultural influences on their own attitudes and behaviours in relation to trust. Questions about the special issue should be directed to Lead Guest Editor Nicole Gillespie (n.gillespie@mbs.edu), John Child (j.child@bham.edu.uk) or Anne Tsui (anne.tsui@ asu.edu). Papers for the special issue should be submitted electronically to both Nicole Gillespie and the MOR office at iacmr.mor@asu.edu 3. WORKSHOP ON TRUST WITHIN AND BETWEEN ORGANIZATIONS Dear FINT members, Many of you have participated in one or more of the first four workshops, which were all organized in Amsterdam late in the month of October. This time we shift the date a bit to be sure that rooms will be available at European Universities, since we intend to make the workshop travelling from now on. We start this adventurous journey in Europe, Spain The next workshop on Trust within and between Organizations will be held in Madrid on Thursday 28 and Friday 29 January 2010. Our local host will be Jose Maria Peiro, professor at the University of Valencia. We are proud to announce Sirkka Jarvenpaa and Ranjay Gulati as key note presenters 2 The call for papers will be posted at the EIASM website in the week of January 19, both specific theme tracks calls and a general call. Two dates are worth noting: Extended abstracts (800-1000 words) are due on June 1 (2009). Notice about acceptance will be given by the end of June. Final papers are due on November 21 (2009). We expect this fifth ‘Lustrum’ workshop to be inspiring and productive, as the first four were, but the participants make things happen, not the organizers. We therefore invite you cordially to participate in this event and bring your best ideas to the table at the workshop, to further trust theory and trust research. Best wishes, Katinka Bijlsma-Frankema and Sim Sitkin 5. CONFERENCE: Trust Culture and Gender November 28, 2008 International Conference 2009 Trust, Culture and Gender“ The Orient Institute for Intercultural Studies is planning to hold a conference titled “Trust, Culture and Gender” in Heilbronn on the 13th and 14th of November 2009. After the publication of the book “Trust in the intercultural context” the results of the research project “Determinants of Trust Development between Arabs and Germans” are now fully available. The conference shall make a contribution to the discussion about the current research results as well as the preparation of a new research project about “Gender aspects of trust”. The Orient Institute for Intercultural Studies will send two more discussion papers for the preparation (anticipated in the middle of March 2009) and would like to ask for commented drafts of abstracts, whereas the abstracts do not necessary have to refer to the Arabic region. We would like to integrate further perspectives from different regional areas into the discussion. The discussion papers that are still to be sent refer to the current research results on the one hand, and on the other hand they deal with the topic “Trust and Gender”. The main focus is business cooperation. As we will apply for support of the conference by DFG, we will need a participation list first of all. Therefore we would be very pleased if you were interested and if you were available at the planned conference. Besides, we welcome your recommendation of further international researchers and your help by gaining them as participants of our conference. We would appreciate an early answer and thus your expression of interest – if possible until 15 December 2008. Please email to: 3 ois@hs-heilbronn.de Kind regards, Prof. Dr. Elias Jammal Melanie Leistikow Institute Director Academic Assistant 6. SPECIAL AWARD for Peter Smith Ring and Andrew Van de Ven The Dan and Mary Lou Schendel Best Paper award recognizes a paper published at least five years ago that has made a lasting contribution to scholarship in strategic management. This year’s winner is Structuring Cooperative Relationships between Organizations, by Peter Smith Ring and Andrew Van de Ven, published in 1992. Structuring Cooperative Relationships examines governance structures and processes in cases of repeated cooperation among multiple organizations. The paper highlights relationships between risk and trust, contracts and contracting processes, and governance mechanisms. Peter and Andy’s work helped stimulate a rich and multi-faceted literature on these topics that continues to evolve in the academic and business literatures. http://smj.strategicmanagement.net/smj_best_paper.php 7.
