Purpose of the course:
The aim of the course is to equip students with four language skills (reading, writing, speaking,
and listening), some sub-skills (vocabulary and structure), and to help them develop reading
strategies necessary for the efficient processing of medical texts.
Materials:
1. Medical Terminology → By: Barbara Janson Cohen (7th edition)
2. English for the students of Medicine → By: M.R. Atai, et al.
*
A monolingual (English to English) dictionary, such as (1)Oxford Advanced Learner Dic.;
(2)Longman Dic. ; (3) American Heritage Dic.; (4) Webster Dic.; etc.
* A medical dictionary, such as (1)Dorland Dic.; (2) Mosby Dic.; (3) Medical Webster; etc.
* References for sentence structure: (1) Sentence improvement (by: Malcolm Moore);
(2)Advanced Grammar in Use (by:Martin Hewings); and (3) Understanding and Using
English Grammar (by: Betty Schrampfer Azar)
Group work:
Since most of the tasks to be done in each session are done in groups, the students are divided
into groups, each consisting of 3 people. It is important that group members sit next to each other
during class sessions.
