Student Brief – HD year 1 – Business/IT Integrated Project

Introduction

The objective of this project is to prepare a business plan for starting a small business or selling a good or a service in your Emirate. You will be assessed both orally

(through preparing a PowerPoint presentation) and in a written format (a hard copy of the presentation is to be included as an appendix to the report. Each group of students (2-4) will present its PowerPoint presentation to the course teachers, classmates and other invited guests. You may occasionally be allocated time during class to work on your project, but you will be expected to do most of the work outside of scheduled class times.

You will need to plan and coordinate your work and time so that you are both effective and efficient. The key to successful completion of this project is managing your time and resources as all business people must do. Late submission of (portions of the) report and/or a late presentation may be penalised, resulting in a lower grade for you and your team members.

In this pack, you will find the following sections:

1. Project Scenario

2. Weekly Task List

3. Student Action Plan

1. Project Scenario

Your friend(s) approached you with an interesting idea. The idea is to establish a business that would sell a product in Abu-Dhabi. This could be accomplished by either selling a good or by offering a service. In order to do so, you and your friend(s) are going to follow many steps that will lead you, at the end, to the successful completion of a business plan for the potential establishment of that business.

The steps that you will go through start with identifying the actual business that you are going to do or the product that you want to sell or offer and the kind of people you want to sell it to. Once this is done, you would then have to legally establish your business in the

UAE and to decide on the number of people that will be employed to help you start the business. To know who to employ, and how many, the group needs to discuss the business structure (how many jobs are needed, which departments are needed, who will work where, etc.) in detail and design a marketing mix strategy that will be used to successfully sell the product in the market of your choice.

Remember that your project should be BUSINESS-FOCUSED. Think about the end result and what it is that you wish to achieve.

1

Is it practical, can we do it?

Is it possible to do? Are there any restrictions or possible problems?

Is this going to be useful to me? To my country?

Am I going to enjoy it?

Is this business going to have any negative effects on the UAE environment? Should we worry? Can we do anything about it?

Think about the possible impact on, and the value of your project to, the local business community.

Another example, if in the financing area of your report you suggest borrowing money from some source, there should be a liability to reflect that borrowing. If there is borrowing, there should also be interest expense on the expense list.

Analyze the effects of the following strategies on the break-even point.

Increase/decrease in the selling price

Increase/decrease in variable costs per unit

Increase/decrease in the fixed expenses

For each case, produce the associated break-even chart. Use appropriate equations to calculate the break-even point in units, in sales and a % of capacity.

If your break-even point is higher than your expected revenues, you'll need to decide whether certain aspects of your plan can be changed to create an achievable break-even point.

IT-specific tasks: Prepare a list of operating expenses and revenues by using suitable formulas and create appropriate charts to show potential business performance.

The Math/IT break-even calculations and charts will be about 10-12 pages in total.
