Algebra I Function Family Writing Assignment
Assignment:
We have investigated six types of functions, examining their graphs and the equations that produce them.
Your assignment is to write a description of each function family. Include the following (numbered, please):

A description of the parent function.
A description of the graph of the functions in the family.
3 unique graph examples of each family. (not the same graph drawn three times)
A description of the changes in the equation that change the direction of the graph.
A description of the changes in the function equation that shift the graph (move it up/down/left/right).
A description of the changes in the function equation that change the width or steepness of the graph.
A description of the patterns in the table of these types of functions.
One table example of each family, with the patterns explicitly shown.
Additional Information:
This assignment should be typed (examples will most likely be hand drawn, can be computer generated if you know how but
not taken from the internet) on printer paper with 0.5 to 0.75 inch margins. Spacing can be single or double. If you use
double spacing, please do not put extra spaces between each numbered description.
This assignment should be a minimum of 3 pages long (1/2 page per function family) and a maximum of 6 pages long (1
page per function family). Pages should be stapled, with the names of all members of the group on each page in the
header. If you would like to put each function on its own page, even if the content only takes up ½ a page, that is fine.
This assignment is due at the beginning of class on Friday, November 7, 2014. This gives you a weekend and election day
to work on it. Please do not wait until Thursday night to begin.
You may work in groups of 2 or 3 for this assignment, or by yourself. I would prefer to see you working in groups of 3.
While we did begin the investigation in class, you may work on the final product with any student who has me for Algebra.
Make sure all first and last names and class periods are on each page.
If you need a graphing calculator to work with different equations/graphs to determine what changes in the equations cause
shifts/direction changes and width/steepness changes, you need to use one in Ms. Clark’s room before school Monday –
Wednesday or during A/B lunch any day.
This is NOT a research paper. All finding should be from your own exploration on a graphing calculator, not from
information you find on the internet or from an older student.
