Once my office hours have been established, you can drop by at your own discretion. If these times do not work for you, e-mail me and we can try to set up a meet. Class Meets: (7/17-8/23) MTuWThF 9:30-11 a.m. Textbook: Raymond A. Serway et al., College Physics, Brooks Cole, 7th edition (2005). ISBN: 0534997236. (Same as for Physics 131) Required. Note: While copies have been ordered at the Textbook Annex, if you do not own it yet, I would recommend trying to purchase the book online, since it is much cheaper that way. If you happened to sell back your textbook after the first part of the course, you may also try to obtain the following title, which contains only the material to be discussed in this course. Raymond A. Serway et al., College Physics, Volume 2, Brooks Cole, 7th edition (2005). ISBN: 053499928X. Course Description: Basic principles of physics illustrated by example and demonstration, whenever possible, from the biological sciences. Topics include electricity, magnetism, radiation, optics, relativity, quantum theory, atomic structure and nuclear physics. Replaces PHYSICS 142 in the curriculum when completed with PHYSICS 134. Prerequisite: PHYSICS 131/133 or equivalent. Grading Scheme (may change before class starts): The grading will be based on weekly homeworks (50%), one or two mini-quizzes a week (10%), a mid-term exam (20%) and the final exam (20%), to be held on the last day of the course, August 23rd. Schedule of Topics (will change as course proceeds): Electricity and Magnetism Week 1: Chapter 15 - Electric Forces and Electric Fields Chapter 16 - Electrical Energy and Capacitance Week 2: Chapter 17 - Current and Resistance Chapter 18 - Direct Current Circuits Week 3: Chapter 19 - Magnetism Chapter 20 - Induces Voltages and Inductance Chapter 21 - AC Circuits and Electromagnetic Waves Light and Optics Week 4: Chapter 22 - Reflection and Refraction of Light Chapter 23 - Mirrors and Lenses Chapter 24 - Wave Optics Modern Physics Week 5: Chapter 26 - Relativity Chapter 27 - Quantum Physics Chapters 28 & 29 - Atomic / Nuclear Physics
