ASL 1 STUDY GUIDE
You will have three videos and workbook that you will be
using to complete this study guide. You have the option to email answers using the contact form at my webpage. Your
EPIC instructor must initial your progress as you go. There is
a blank space after each assignment for your instructors intials
to be recorded.
UNIT 1
Assignment 1: Alphabet and Numbers to 10.
During this assignment I will teach you the alphabet and numbers 1-10. I will also teach the
proper mechanics for fingerspelling (it is important that you fingerspell smoothly without
bouncing or pushing your hand). You will then watch me fingerspell 10 3-letter words that
you need to write down and turn in for a daily grade. You may refer to your alphabet
worksheet while I fingerspell the words ____________________
Assignment 2: Watch Mr. Woods sign the vocabulary for Unit 1. You should follow along using your
book if possible. _________________
Assignment 3: Print page 2 ( “Same or Different”) in the Signing Naturally Level 1 workbook. You
will watch the Signing Naturally Level 1 video and determine if the two people are signing the same
thing or not. Circle the correct answer on the paper you have printed. Sometimes they will sign the
same sign but the faces will be different. This could change the meaning of the sign.

Assignment 4: Read pages 3 and 4 in the Signing Naturally workbook, Introduction of American
Sign Language and Introduction to the Deaf Community. Go to the ASL 1 webpage and print out
the worksheet and answer the questions for a daily grade. _________________
Assignment 5: Watch Mr. Woods sign 5 sentences and then five 3-letter words. WRITE THE
SENTENCES IN ENGLISH! Remember you are translating what I sign. Even though my sentences
use ASL “style” that is not how you would translate the sentence to a hearing person. You may use
your book. After you write the sentences down turn them in. __________________
Assignment 6: Go online and print out the words you will fingerspell to a camera and turn in to me.
Remember to sign “number 1” before you fingerspell the word. You cannot use your alphabet chart
when signing this quiz grade.________________
Assignment 7: Go to the ASL webpage and watch the Powerpoint about ASL facts. You will need to
print and turn in the worksheet and crossword that go with the Powerpoint. This information will be
on the Units 1 and 2 test.______________
UNIT 2
Assignment 1: Go on line to the ASL 1 website and print out the worksheet for Forming Questions
pp. (8-9) and Which Hand Do I Use pp. (10-11). Read these selections in your Signing Naturally
Workbook and then answer the worksheet. __________
Assignment 2: Watch Unit 2 vocabulary on the ASL 1 webpage. Then go the ASLpro and take the
Units 1 and 2 quiz. You will need to print your score or send me a screenshot via email. If you need
help, the instructions for accessing the ASLpro assignments are on my home page in a gold
box.____________
Assignment 3:This assignment has two parts:
a) Question Types (p.9). Now that you know how to make a question (yes/no or “wh”) in ASL you
will watch a Deaf person do it. First, copy page 9 out of your workbook so that you are able to record
your answers and turn them in. Then watch this assignment on your Signing Naturally Level 1 DVD.
The Deaf person will sign 10 questions. You do not need to write the question, just indicate whether
the question is a “yes/no” or “wh” question. ____________________
b) Number Phrases (p. 10). Copy page 10 out of your Signing Naturally workbook so that you may
record your answers. On your Signing Naturally Level 1 DVD you will watch the Deaf person show
you how to sign numbers 1-10 then they will sign 10 number phrases. You do not need to write the
entire phrase, only the two numbers they show you. Here is an example:
The Deaf person may sign: 10 BOY 3 GIRL.
You only need to write the two numbers that they show you (10 and 3). You do not have to write
“boy” and “girl”.__________________
Assignment 4: You will watch Mr. Woods sign 10 sentences and five 4-letter words. You need to
write these down and turn them in. Notice that sometimes I shake my head to mean “not” or “don’t”.
I could sign: CANDY I LIKE and at the same time shake my head. This would change the meaning
of the sentence to “I don’t like candy”. You may watch this as many times as you need to and you
may use your book and alphabet chart._____________________
Assignment 5: Go to the ASL webpage and print the worksheet for this assignment. Watch the first
and second conversations on page 7. Answer the questions on the worksheet and turn them
in._______
Assignment 6: You will watch Mr. Woods sign 10 number phrases. Unlike assignment 4, you will
have to write the entire number phrase. You may use your book. _________________
Assignment 7: Go to the ASL 1 webpage and view my lecture on how to produce basic sentences in
ASL. You will need this information when you sign your quiz (assignment 9) to the camera. Then go
to the ASLpro website and take the Interrogative quiz. You will need to print your score or send me
a screenshot via email. If you need help, the instructions for accessing the ASLpro assignments are
on my home page in a gold box.____________
Assignment 8: Go to the ASL 1 webpage and view 10 sentences. Write them down using correct
English syntax and turn them in for a daily grade. You may use your book. _________
Assignment 9: Go to the ASL 1 webpage and print the 10 sentences you will sign to the camera for a
quiz grade. Remember to sign “NUMBER 1” and so forth before signing each sentence. If you make
an error, sign “AGAIN” and start that sentence over again. You will not lose points for starting a
sentence over. You can not use your book or alphabet chart while signing your quiz.________
Assignment 10: Unit 1 and 2 test. This test has two parts and will cover all material from Units 1 and
2 (including ASL Facts). Go to the ASL 1 webpage and print the written part of the test and view the
material you will be required to translate into English. You may not use your book or
notes.____________
UNIT 3
Assignment 1: Copy page 13, Picture It from your workbook. Draw the diagrams that the Deaf
people draw in the air. Be sure to look at the example drawing.__________________
Assignment 2:
Go to the ASL 1 webpage and watch the Unit 3 vocabulary. Use your book to follow along. Then go
to the ASLpro website and complete the Unit 3 quiz. You will need to print your score or send me a
screenshot via email. If you need help, the instructions for accessing the ASLpro assignments are on
my home page in a gold box.____________
Assignment 3: Fingerspelling part 1 (p.22). Ignore the instructions in the workbook. On your
Signing Naturally Level 1 DVD you will watch a three Deaf persons fingerspell a total of 3 words.
Two of the words will be the same and one word will be different. You must write all three words
shown in order. The answer for the example shown on the tape is: PAT PAM PAT. Many of the
words you will see are names. ____________
Assignment 4: Go to the ASL 1 webpage and view 10 questions that you are to write down and turn
in. You may use your book.________
Assignment 5: Go to the ASL 1 webpage and print the worksheet for Spatial Agreement (p.19). Read
this section in your Signing Naturally Level 1 workbook and complete the worksheet.________
Assignment 6: Copy page 20 Conveying Distance and Identify Where in your workbook so that you
can record your answers. Using your Signing Naturally Level 1 DVD watch the Deaf woman explain
how tracing routes are done in ASL. You will need to understand how things are signed when they
are close or far from the signer. Then you will have to complete the assignment “Identify Where” at
the bottom of page 20. Indicate the location of various objects by writing them down on the hallway.
T he answer for the example “Water fountain” has been done for you. The Deaf signer signed water
fountain and then traced the route all the way down the hall and to the left. You are to answer the
first 5 in the same manner. You do not need to do the last one. Number 4 shows a variation of the
sign CAFETERIA. ___________________
Assignment 7: Go to the ASL 1 webpage and print the worksheet and puzzle for the History of ASL
Powerpoint. View the Powerpoint and complete the worksheet and puzzle. You will be responsible
for this information on the Unit 3 test._________
Assignment 8: Go to the ASL 1 webpage and view the 10 sentences you will need to write and turn in
for a daily grade. You may use your book and watch as many times as you need to.______
Assignment 9: Go to the ASL 1 webpage and print the worksheet for this assignment. Using your
Signing Naturally DVD watch both of the conversations on page 18 (Language in Action) and answer
the worksheet questions._________
Assignment 10: Go to the ASL 1 webpage and copy the sentences you will sign to the camera for a
quiz grade. Remember to sign “NUMBER 1” and so forth before signing each sentence. If you make
an error, sign “AGAIN” and start that sentence over again. You will not lose points for starting a
sentence over. You can not use your book or alphabet chart while signing your quiz.________
Assignment 11: Unit 3 test. This test has two parts and will cover all material from Unit 3 including
ASL history. Go to the ASL 1 webpage and print the written part of the test and view the material
you will be required to translate into English. You may not use your book or notes.____________
UNIT 4
Assignment 1: Go to the ASL 1 webpage and print the worksheet for “When Do I Fingerspell?” (p.
33 in workbook). You will read is section and answer the worksheet questions.___________________
Assignment 2:Watch the vocabulary for Unit 4 and use your book to follow along. Then go to the
ASLpro website and complete the Unit 4 quiz. You will need to print your score or send me a
screenshot via email. If you need help, the instructions for accessing the ASLpro assignments are on

Assignment 3: Go to the ASL 1 webpage and complete the assignment for math problems. You must
write out the math problem. (ex. 10 + 2 = 12)________
Assignment 4: Print page p.32, “Ben’s Keys” and Trivia #1, in your workbook. Complete these
assignments and turn in for a daily grade.__________________
Assignment 5: Go to the ASL 1 webpage and view animal signs. Then go to ASLpro and complete the
Animal Signs quiz. You will need to print your score or send me a screenshot via email. If you need
help, the instructions for accessing the ASLpro assignments are on my home page in a gold
box.____________
Assignment 6: Go to the ASL 1 webpage and view the lecture about sign parameters. You will view
how to sign Texas cities and how to break down signs by their 4 parameters._________
Assignment 7: Go to the ASL 1 webpage and print the list of animal signs that you will sign to the
camera for a quiz grade. Remember to sign “NUMBER 1” and so forth before signing each animal
set. If you make an error, sign “AGAIN” and start that animal set over again. You will not lose
points for starting over. You can not use your book or notes while signing your quiz.________
Assignment 8: Go to the ASL 1 webpage and print out the list of signs that you will break down by
their parameters and turn in for a daily grade. Please view the assignment 6 lecture if you need a
review of how to do this._______
Assignment 9: Go to the ASL 1 webpage and watch 10 sentences that will include Unit 4 vocabulary,
animal signs numbers to 20 and Texas cities. You may use your book.__________
Assignment 10: Go to the ASL 1 webpage print the worksheet about ASL classifiers and
fingerspelled loan signs. Watch the lecture on classifiers and fingerspelled loan signs in ASL. You will
then need to go to the ASLpro website to finish the worksheet questions._____________
Assignment 11: Go to the ASL 1 webpage and print the worksheet that goes with the conversations
on page 28 (Language in Action). View the conversations and answer the worksheet
questions.________
Assignment 12: Go to the ASL 1 webpage and watch 10 sentences that contain classifiers. List any
classifiers used in each sentence (ex. ICL “using a wrench” or DCL “freckles”). You do not need to
write the entire sentence. ___________
Assignment 13: Unit 4 test. This test has two parts and will cover all material from Unit 4 including
animal signs, sign parameters, classifiers and Texas cities. Go to the ASL 1 webpage and print the
written part of the test and view the material you will be required to translate into English. You may
not use your book or notes.____________
UNIT 5
Assignment 1: Go to the ASL 1 webpage and print the worksheet related to Forming Negative
Statements (pp.40-41) and pronoun types (p. 49). Then view the lecture and complete the worksheet
questions. _____________
Assignment 2: Go to the ASL 1 webpage to watch the vocabulary for Unit 5 and use your book to
follow along. Then go to the ASLpro website and complete the Unit 5 quiz. You will need to print

Assignment 3: Copy p. 43 in your workbook (Fingerspelling Part 2) and complete the assignment as
instructed using your Signing Naturally DVD._______
Assignment 4: Go to the ASL 1 webpage and watch the lecture on contrastive structure and ranking.
You will be given an assignment to write down and turn in.__________
Assignment 5: Copy p. 40 (Bob and Bill) and complete the assignment as instructed using your
Signing Naturally DVD._______
Assignment 6: Go to the ASL 1 webpage and print the worksheet and crossword related to the Deaf
Culture PowerPoint. You will need to use SPEAKERS OR A HEADSET as you watch this so that
you can hear the lecture associated with this Powerpoint. Complete the worksheet and
crossword.______
Assignment 7: Go to the ASL 1 webpage and watch the 10 sentences plus ranking and contrastive
structure examples. You may use your book. Write these down and turn them in._________
Assignment 8: Go to the ASL 1 webpage and download the worksheet associated with the two
conversations on page 38 (Language in Action). Complete worksheet questions and turn in.______
Assignment 9: Go to the ASL 1 webpage and print the quiz that you will sign to a camera. If you
make an error, sign “AGAIN” and correct your error. You will not lose points for corrections. You
can not use your book or notes while signing your quiz.________
Assignment 10: Deaf Culture Powerpoint. Go the ASL 1 webpage and download the information
concerning how to produce this assignment. ___________
Assignment 11: Unit 5 test. This test has two parts and will cover all material from Unit 5 including
Deaf culture/history. Go to the ASL 1 webpage and print the written part of the test and view the
material you will be required to translate into English. You may not use your book or
notes.____________
UNIT 6
Assignment 1: Copy the blank calendars on page 53 of your workbook. Then go to the ASL 1
webpage and watch the lecture concerning Time Concepts on page 52. Turn in the calendar
worksheet when finished.______________
Assignment 2: Go to the ASL 1 webpage to watch the vocabulary for Unit 6 and use your book to
follow along. Then go to the ASLpro website and complete the Unit 6 quiz. You will need to print
your score or send me a screenshot via email. If you need help, the instructions for accessing the
ASLpro assignments are on my home page in a gold box.____________
Assignment 3: Again copy the blank calendars on page 53 of your workbook. You will ignore the
directions in the workbook. Watch Calendar part 1 on your Signing Naturally DVD. Remember that
today is represented by the 16th for each calendar. Circle the date on the calendar that is referred to
by the signer. At the bottom of each calendar write out “who did what”. The example would have “I
overslept” written below it for the activity that happened on the 13 th.
Assignment 4: Copy page 56 (What Did They Decide?) and then watch the assignment on your
Signing Naturally DVD. Do assignment as instructed and do not forget to write when each activity
will occur. You do not have to do page 57 (What Reason Did They Give?)____________
Assignment 5: Copy page 58 in your workbook (Trivia part 2). Watch the assignment on your
Signing Naturally DVD and complete it as instructed._________
Assignment 6:Go to the ASL 1 webpage and watch the 10 sentences signed for Unit 6. You may use
your book. Write these down and turn them in._____
Assignment 7: Go to the ASL 1 webpage and watch the assignment where directions are asked about
places in Marble Falls. Answer each question using a complete sentence.________
Assignment 8: Go to the ASL 1 webpage and print out the 10 sentences you will sign to a camera for
a quiz grade. Remember to sign “NUMBER 1” and so forth before signing each sentence. If you
make an error, sign “AGAIN” and start that sentence over again. You will not lose points for starting
over. You can not use your book or notes while signing your quiz.________
Assignment 9: Go to ASL 1 webpage and print worksheet associated with the conversations on p. 51
(Language in Action). Watch the conversations on your Signing Naturally DVD and complete the
worksheet.
Assignment 10: Unit 6 test. This test will cover all information concerning Unit 6 including verb tense
and giving directions. You will need to copy the blank calendars on page 53 of your workbook and
the street scene on page 54. Then go to the ASL 1 webpage and take the Unit 6 test. You can not use
your book or notes during the test.___________
ASL Midterm: This assignment has two parts. Go to the ASL 1 webpage to print out the written
exam and to view the signed portion of the test. The test will cover all materials from the alphabet to
Unit 6.
UNIT 7
Assignment 1: Go to the ASL 1 webpage and print the worksheet for pp. 74-75 (Name Signs and How
Do Deaf People…) in your Signing Naturally workbook. Read the sections and complete the
worksheet.________
Assignment 2: Go to the ASL 1 webpage and watch the Unit 7 vocabulary. Use your book to follow
along. Then go to the ASLpro website and complete the Unit 7 quiz. You will need to print your score

Assignment 3: Watch the lecture concerning ASL Gloss and Grammar. You will need to make a copy
of your notes and turn them in.______
Assignment 4: Go to the ASL 1 webpage and watch the lecture concerning ordinal numbers and the
diagram on p. 79 (Giving Directions Using a Common Reference). You will complete 5 questions
associated with the diagram on p. 79.__________
Assignment 5: Fingerspelling part 3. Complete this assignment as instructed on p. 80 and turn in for
a daily grade.__________
Assignment 6: Go to the ASL 1 webpage and watch the 10 sentences associated with the Unit 7
vocabulary. You may use your book. Write them down and turn in for a daily grade. _________
Assignment 7: Go to the ASL 1 webpage and print the worksheet associated with p. 81 (CrossCultural Communication). You will need to view the lecture on-line because it will explain what this
is and why it is important to know. Answer the worksheet as you follow along.______
Assignment 8: Go to the ASL 1 webpage and print the worksheet associated with p.77 (Language in
Action). Watch the two conversations and answer the worksheet questions.______
Assignment 9: Go to the ASL 1 webpage and print the sentences that you will transcribe in ASL
Gloss.________
Assignment 10: Go to the ASL 1 webpage and print the sentences you will sign to the camera.
Remember to sign “NUMBER 1” and so forth before signing each sentence. If you make an error,
sign “AGAIN” and start that sentence over again. You will not lose points for starting over. You can
not use your book or notes while signing your quiz.
Assignment 11: View the dialogue between Ben and Mary for Giving Directions (p.79) on your
Signing Naturally DVD. Write out dialogues 2-6 completely. Here is the 1st dialogue written for you:
Ben: I’m hungry and want a sandwich. Where can I get one?
Mary: As you enter the 3rd floor look to the corner to your left and you will see the sandwich bar.
Write out dialogues 2-6 in the same manner.
Assignment 12: Unit 7 test. This test has two parts. This test covers all material in Unit 7 including
name signs, technology for the deaf, ASL Gloss, cross-cultural communication and ordinal numbers.
You will need to go to the ASL 1 webpage and print the copy of the written test. You will also view
the signed section there as well. You can not use your book or notes.__________
Unit 8
Assignment 1: Go to the ASL 1 webpage and print the worksheet associated with the lecture over
ASL Gloss and Grammar. Watch the lecture and complete the worksheet________
Assignment 2: Go to the ASL 1 webpage and watch the Unit 8 vocabulary. Use your book to follow
along. Then go to the ASLpro website and complete the Unit 8 quiz. You will need to print your score

Assignment 3: Go to the ASL 1 webpage and print the worksheet associated with pp. 90-91
(Grammar Notes-Identifying Others) in your workbook. Read the section and answer the worksheet

Assignment 4: Grammar Practice pp. 91-92 (Identifying Others). Watch the first two dialogues and
write them out following the format in your workbook. ____
Assignment 5: Go to the ASL 1 webpage and view the lecture on identifying others. You will either
need to print the 3 pages of faces or you can simply open all three and refer to them as you complete
the assignment. ________
Assignment 6: Go to the ASL 1 webpage and print the sentences you are to write out in ASL Gloss.
Turn these in for a daily grade.
Assignment 7: Missing Number (p.94). Complete this assignment as instructed in your workbook.
Assignment 8: Go the ASL 1 webpage and copy the worksheet for the conversations on page 89
(Language in Action). Watch the conversations and complete the worksheet._______
Assignment 9: Go to the ASL webpage and print the quiz you are to sign to the camera. Remember
to sign “NUMBER 1” and so forth before signing each sentence. If you make an error, sign
“AGAIN” and start that sentence over again. You will not lose points for starting over. You can not
use your book or notes while signing your quiz.________
Assignment 10: Copy page 93 (Personal Data) and complete the assignment as instructed in your
workbook.
Assignment 11: Unit 8 test. This test has two parts. This test covers all material in Unit 8 including
ASL Gloss and numbers to 99. You will need to go to the ASL 1 webpage and print the copy of the
written test. You will also view the signed section there as well. You can not use your book or
notes.__________
UNIT 9
Assignment 1: Go to the ASL 1 webpage and print the worksheet for the ASL Gloss and Grammar
lecture. View the lecture and answer the worksheet as you follow along._______
Assignment 2: Go to the ASL 1 webpage and watch the Unit 9 vocabulary. Use your book to follow
along. Then go to the ASLpro website and complete the Unit 9 quiz. You will need to print your score

Complete the worksheet as instructed on the paper._____
Assignment 6: Go to the ASL 1webpage and watch the 10 sentences associated with Unit 9. Write
them down and turn them in for a daily grade. You may use your book._______
Assignment 7: Go to the ASL 1webpage and print the worksheets associated with the first
conversation on page 106 (Language in Action). Watch the first conversation only and complete the
worksheets._____
Assignment 8: Go to the ASL 1webpage and print the sentences that you will sign to the camera for a

the copy of the written test. You will also view the signed section there as well. You can not use your

UNIT 10
Assignment 1: Go to the ASL 1webpage and print the worksheet associated with ASL Gloss and
Grammar. Watch the lecture and complete the worksheet as you go along.______

Assignment 3: Fingerspelling part 4 (p.127). Ignore the instructions in the book. You are to write out
every word that is fingerspelled, in order. The answer for the example would be written as “ CHAT

Assignment 4: Age Numbers (125-126). Read the section on page 125 on how age numbers are
formed. Complete the assignment on p. 126 as instructed.______
Assignment 5: Go to the ASL 1webpage and watch the 10 sentences associated with Unit 10
vocabulary. You may use your book. Write each sentence and turn them in.______
Assignment 6: Copy pp. 126-127 (A Show Of Hands) in your workbook. Watch the assignment on
your Signing Naturally DVD and complete the assignment as instructed._____

Assignment 2: Go to the ASL 1 webpage and view the lecture on Role Shifting and Describing
Characteristics. You will be given an assignment to turn in for a daily grade._____________
Assignment 3: Copy p. 140 (Describing Characters) from your workbook. You are to watch the third
segment about Gone With the Wind only. Complete the workbook as instructed for Gone With the
Wind only._________

to p141 (Winning Numbers). Ignore the instructions in the book and write all numbers shown in
order. Turn this in for a grade.______
Assignment 6: Go to the ASL 1 webpage and print the sentences you will be signing to the camera.
Remember to sign “NUMBER 1” and so forth before signing each sentence. If you make an error,
sign “AGAIN” and start that sentence over again. You will not lose points for starting over. You can
not use your book or notes while signing your quiz.________

on p.138 (Language in Action). Complete the worksheet as you watch the conversations.______

Assignment 1: Go to the ASL 1 webpage and watch the Unit 12 vocabulary. Use your book to follow
along. Then go to the ASLpro website and complete the Unit 12 quiz. You will need to print your
score or send me a screenshot via email. If you need help, the instructions for accessing the ASLpro
assignments are on my home page in a gold box.____________
Assignment 2 Clock Numbers and What Time (p. 151 and 153) Read the section GRAMMAR
NOTES p.151 (Clock Numbers) to understand how these are produced. Note that a.m. and p.m. are
not fingerspelled but understood by the time of day the event occurred. For example 8 a.m. is signed
8-O’CLOCK MORNING and 3 p.m. would be 3-O’CLOCK AFTERNOON. On your Signing
Naturally DVD you will see time signs modeled for you (GRAMMAR PRACTICE Clock Numbers).
You will then watch the assignment What Time? (p.153) on your DVD. Ignore the instructions in the
workbook. All you need to do is write the time the activity occurred and whether it was a.m. or pm.
You do not need to write the activity. (The answer for the example is simply 8:30 a.m.).
Assignment 3:Go to the ASL 1 webpage and view ten sentences from Unit 12 vocabulary and write
them down.___________
Assignment 4: Go to the ASL 1 webpage and print the worksheet associated with
CULTURE/LANGUAGE NOTES pp.154-155 (Brief History of Deaf America). Read this section
from your workbook and answer the questions on you worksheet_______.
Assignment 5: Go to the ASL 1 webpage and print the sentences you will sign for a quiz grade.
Assignment 6: Turn to page 170 (Analyzing Numbers) in your workbook . Ignore the instructions in
your book. Using your Signing Naturally DVD view each number and write it down (you do not have
to tell me whether it is a cardinal number or cents or so forth).
