Healthy Snacks (Group Project & Party)- 100 points
The purpose of the project is to evaluate healthy alternatives to foods commonly eaten by teens and then prepare these foods.
Standards: 1.4 N: Describe dietary guidelines, food groups, nutrients, and serving sizes for healthy eating. 3.3N: Describe how to use nutrition information on food labels to compare products, 4.2N: Practice how to refuse less-nutritious foods in social settings.
7.2N: Select healthy foods and beverages in a variety of settings, 7.3N: Identify strategies for eating more fruits and vegetables
1) Think of a snack or food commonly eaten by teens that is unhealthy & then find a recipe for a snack that is a healthy alternative. Example: a healthy quesadilla compared to a
Taco Bell quesadilla or a fruit smoothie compared to a Jamba Juice smoothie of the same flavor. BE SURE TO COMPARE THE SAME SERVING SIZE! Use the links below to find a recipe & visit the company website for the nutrition facts for the unhealthy snack.
ANALYZE both foods to determine if the recipe is HEALTHIER than the original snack
Click on the “healthy choices rules”, (handout from class or linked on my website), to find the rules to analyze your choices. Get your recipe approved by your teacher. Come up with a theme for your food that will make it appealing to eat!
The recipe must include the nutrition info. & make enough for at least 10
people in class to sample. Only 1 group will be allowed per recipe. You will need to do your prep work outside of class hours. Click here for healthy recipes resources .
Remember if sugar is on the ingredient list, there is ADDED sugar in your food & grams of sugar that may not be shown on the website’s nutrition
facts. You may need to calculate the grams of sugar in 1 cup of sugar. There are 192 grams of sugar in 1 cup of granulated sugar.
2) Typed Paper:
Page 1- A cover page with the title of your recipe & the complete name of each group member, a picture that relates to your recipe/theme & a health claim (see food label notes) and a nutrient content claim .
Page 2- The typed recipe: Do NOT just print from the website. Include the title, the name of the website/source, how many servings, ingredient list, prep steps, nutrition
facts & clipart. ( See example here ).
Page 3- Nutrition Facts Comparison: You will need to compare & calculate the nutrition facts for your recipe & the snack you are comparing it to. Create your own table in MS Word to make a food label. (See the sample food label on my website for the correct categories). Both food labels should be on the same page. Title this page & each food label. Fill in ALL sections found on the sample food label. Base all numbers and calculations on ONE serving of the food. You will need to use the
“healthy choices rules” from above. Show ALL calculations below each food label.
Page 4- Summary: At least 10 sentences to explain:
1) Which food group this snack would be an example of? What kind of nutrients will you get from eating this food?
2) What makes this snack the healthier choice in comparison to the other food?
Apply and explain each of the 9 “healthy choices rules” from above & include other facts.
3) Your health claim and nutrient content claim. Explain each.
4) When comparing this food to the unhealthy choice, explain what changes were made to the recipe that made it healthier? ex. Fat-free milk instead of whole milk
Other resources to help your comparison (use these links to help with your summary):
Benefits of Fiber , Added Sugar (notes from in class), Teen Vitamin & Mineral
Recommendations, Healthy vs. Unhealthy Fats , Sodium , Cholesterol , Trans Fat
3) Prepare the recipe outside of class hours & properly transport to school. Provide a sample for at least 10 of your classmates. You will be given 10 mins. to set up & serve your samples. You will serve on: _________ (date will be announced in class)
*Overall: Make sure to use the same font style on all of your pages & be consistent with your theme. Proofread & use spell check. You can earn extra credit if you decorate your table and/or wear costumes, etc.!!!!
