Summer Newsletter 2010
A round up of news on IP publications, jobs, funding, training,
conferences, events and announcements
Apologies for the delay, but we have been experiencing technical difficulties with the
IAIP website. However the site is now up and running with plenty of coverage from
the 9th International Investigative Psychology Conference, held in January 2010.
Sneak preview of interview with Colonel Gerard Labuschagne, head of the
South African Police Service Investigative Psychology Unit:
Hiding in bushes waiting for a murderous predator to strike, or raiding toilets to arrest a
suspected serial rapist is standard procedure for Colonel Gerard Labuschagne, who heads up
South Africa’s Investigative Psychology unit.
It may sound like something straight from the fictional streets of hit TV show CSI, but this
team of psychologists are in the rare position of being involved in cases right from the initial
investigation and this is reflected in their moto: “from crime scene to courtroom”.
As police officers (with military-style titles) rather than civilians or consultants, they are able
to track, arrest and interview suspects, examine crime scenes, and give evidence in court.
“I always say that even if you’ve murdered 16 people that is about 16 hours of your life, not
even one full day. A person is much more than 16 hours.”

Book Description
Contemporary transnational criminals take advantage of globalization, trade liberalization,
and emerging new technologies to commit a diverse range of crimes, and to move money,
goods, services, and people instantaneously for purposes of pure economic gain and/or
political violence. This book captures the importance of transnational business crime and
international relations by examining the rise of international economic crime and recent
strategies in the United States and abroad to combat it.
Situational Prevention of Organised Crimes (Hardcover)
by Karen Bullock, Ronald V. Clarke, Nick Tilley
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Situational-Prevention-Organised-CrimesBullock/dp/1843927721/ref=sr_1_60?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1271761925&sr=1-60
Book Description
Situational crime prevention is the art and science of reducing opportunities for crime.
Despite accumulating evidence of its value in reducing many different kinds of crime - such
as burglary, fraud, robbery, car theft, child sexual abuse and even terrorism - little has
previously been published about its role in reducing organized crimes. This collection of case
studies, by a distinguished international group of researchers, fills this gap by documenting
the application of a situational prevention approach to a variety of organized crimes. These
include sex trafficking, cigarette and drug smuggling, timber theft, mortgage fraud,
corruption of private professionals and public officials, and subversion of tendering
procedures for construction projects.

Journal articles
Interviewing suspects: Practice, science, and future directions
Saul M. Kassin, Sara C. Appleby and Jennifer Torkildson Perillo
Citing recent studies, this paper proposes that laboratory paradigms be used to help build
more diagnostic models of interrogation. Substantively, we suggest that the British PEACE
approach to investigative interviewing may provide a potentially effective alternative to the
classic American interrogation. As a matter of policy, we suggest that the videotaping of
entire interrogations from a balanced camera perspective is necessary to improve the fact
finding accuracy of judges and juries who must evaluate confession evidence in court.

A sequential examination of offenders’ verbal strategies during stranger rapes:
the influence of location.
Claire Lawrence, Julia Fossi and David Clarke
This paper examines the verbal strategies used by offenders during rape, examining the
sequential, temporal and interactional aspects of sexual assaults. Forty-five statements
taken from victims of rape were analysed in order to examine the interactive impact of the
verbal strategies of offenders.

A theoretical and practical test of geographical profiling with serial vehicle theft
in a U.K. context
Matthew Tonkin, Jessica Woodhams, John W. Bond, & Trudy Loe
Geographical profiling is an investigative methodology sometimes employed by the police to
predict the residence of an unknown offender from the locations of his/her crimes. The
validity of geographical profiling, however, has not been fully explored for certain crime
types. This study, therefore, presents a preliminary test of the potential for geographical
profiling with a sample of 145 serial vehicle thieves from the U.K.

The Consistency of Inconsistency in Serial Homicide: Patterns of Behavioural
Change across Series
Marina Sorochinski & C. Gabrielle Salfati
Linkage analysis is a crucial part of the investigative process when faced with a possible
series of related offences. The present study examined patterns of consistency and change
using a combination of thematic and behavioural subgroup approaches that use
Multidimensional Scaling. Thematic differentiation indicative of behavioural manifestations of
cognitive strategies was found in all three examined subgroups: planning, wounding, and
offender–victim interaction, and patterns of change within these subgroups provided support
for the above theories.

Linking Serial Residential Burglary: Comparing the Utility of Modus Operandi
Behaviours, Geographical Proximity, and Temporal Proximity
Lucy Markson, Jessica Woodhams, & John W. Bond
Whilst case linkage is used with serious forms of serial crime (e.g. rape and murder), the
potential exists for it to be used with volume crime. This study replicates and extends
previous research on the behavioural linking of burglaries. One hundred and sixty solved
residential burglaries were sampled from a British police force. From these, 80 linked crime
pairs (committed by the same serial offender) and 80 unlinked crime pairs (committed by
two different serial offenders) were created.

Human Rights, Human Wrongs: Dilemmas and Diversity in Criminology
The theme has been chosen to reflect the fact that criminology remains in a period of
expansion and transition, embracing an impressive range of theoretical and empirical
perspectives. Human rights has in the last three to five years emerged as one of the most
pressing and stimulating areas of criminological study.
The conference theme gives primacy to the increasingly important relationship between
criminology and human rights, but has been framed in deliberately inclusive terms as a way
of capturing the imagination of all criminologists.
