Prior to that time, she was in private practice as a partner in the Chicago office of Katten Muchin & Zavis law firm, now Katten Muchin Rosenman LLP. She is a graduate of The University of Chicago Law School and Wellesley College (Wellesley College Scholar) and has served as an Adjunct Professor of Law at IIT Chicago-Kent College of Law. In her current role, Grace speaks and writes about federal tax developments of interest to wealth management clients and professionals, with a special focus on charitable giving and pending legislation. A national speaker, her past presentations include programs for ACTEC, ALI/ABA, the American Bar Association, the Arizona, Colorado and California Bars, the Illinois Institute of Continuing Legal Education, and the Notre Dame Tax and Estate Planning Institute. Her articles have appeared in Trusts & Estates, The Journal of Taxation, Probate & Property, and Taxation of Exempts. In addition, she has co-authored chapters in the CCH Federal Tax Service and the American Bar Association's The Lawyer's Guide to Retirement. She currently serves on the board and as program cochair of the Chicago Council on Planned Giving and on the professional advisors committees of The Chicago Community Trust and Newberry Library. Grace is a Fellow of the American Bar Foundation. MARLA BECK, CSA, CPA (inactive) Owner and President Andelcare Marla Beck is owner and president of Andelcare, a non-medical home care agency in Seattle, Bellevue and surrounding areas that provides companionship, homemaking and personal care services to seniors. Marla has more than 35 years experience in the service sector of business in the local Puget Sound area. She has a business degree from the University of Washington and started her career as a CPA. She has worked for a variety of firms including Arthur Andersen, Washington Mutual, Bon Marche, United Way and Bank of America. Just prior to starting Andelcare, Marla was Vice President of Private Client Services for Marsh & McLennan, a fortune 500 company. Having a very well rounded background includes being a Certified Senior Advisor which enables her to meet the key needs and issues concerning mature adults. Her life experiences which include being a two time cancer survivor make her uniquely qualified to deal with the many issues that come up for clients and their family members when age or disability affects their independence. Marla started this company as a way of giving back to the memory of her own grandparents and her father that she misses very much. Seniors have so much wisdom and insight but our culture is so focused on the young that we tend to ignore our elders. Marla feels that seniors are not given the respect and care they deserve and in her own way is trying to correct this. Prior to her current position, she led the planned giving and endowment building programs at Children’s Hospital & Research Center Foundation at Oakland, California. Lorraine has been in fund development and tax-exempt planning for 19 years. She received a bachelor’s degree in Humanities, cum laude, from the University of the Philippines and a master’s degree in English Literature from Boston University. She also holds the designation of Certified Specialist in Planned Giving from the American Institute of Philanthropic Studies at California State University, Long Beach. GARDNER, NABE Principal Gardner Economics, LLC Matthew Gardner is principal of Gardner Economics, LLC, a full service land use, real estate and economic advisory company. He heads all residential commercial, economic and litigation support assignments dealing with market evaluation, market positioning, economic base assessment, financial feasibility and fiscal implications of residential and commercial real estate projects. Matthew is particularly involved on highest and best use assignments where market trends are given residual land value expressions. STEVE SCHILLING, CFA Director, Wealth Management Group Bernstein Global Wealth Management Steve Schilling, a Director in Bernstein’s Wealth Management Group based in San Francisco, advises the firm’s Bay Area and Pacific Northwest clients regarding complex investment planning issues. He has expertise in diversification planning for holders of concentrated portfolios, multigenerational wealth transfer, philanthropy, and pre-transaction planning. GREG SCHUPRA Comerica Charitable Services Group Gregory A. Schupra brings an uncommon, if not unique, combination of experiences, capabilities and values to his role as Vice President of Comerica Bank and Group Manager of the expanding Comerica Charitable Services Group which currently manages over 1,700 charitable accounts totaling more than $4 billion. Before joining Comerica, Mr. Schupra worked in the nonprofit community for 19 years most recently serving as vice president for a large community foundation. Prior to that, he directed the fund development programs for several colleges and universities. In addition to his 29 years of experience as a charitable gift planning professional, Mr. Schupra worked as a bank manager and has served as a governing board member of several for-profit corporations and national and regional nonprofit organizations including Spring Arbor University and the Partnership for Philanthropic Planning [formerly NCPG]. He is often asked to share his ideas, perspectives and experiences on topics relating to charitable gift planning with various groups and the media throughout the country. KAREN L. SUSAC, JD, CEBS, CLU, ChFC, CSSC, FLMI, FFSI, ARA Advanced Markets Director Symetra Financial As the Advanced Markets Director for Symetra Life Insurance Company, Ms. Susac consults with producers and advisors regarding the use of life and annuity products and other financial instruments in complex and sophisticated estate, business and executive benefit planning strategies. She provides technical support and guidance on the tax and legal aspects of business protection and continuation planning, estate and trust planning and executive benefit programs. She is a frequent speaker on advanced planning concepts and available to advise on benefit, insurance and tax issues. Prior to joining Symetra in 1999, she consulted in all aspects of nonqualified executive benefit plans. Ms. Susac received her AB degree in Philosophy from the University of Illinois and a JD degree from the John Marshall Law School. She is a member of the Illinois and Oregon Bar Associations. She has the CLU (Chartered Life Underwriter) and ChFC (Chartered Financial Consultant) designations from the American College of Life Underwriters at Bryn Mawr. She maintains PACE status. KELLY SWEET, CFP, CPA Client Advisor Laird Norton Tyee Kelly E. Sweet is a client advisor with 20 years experience in the financial advisory field. Clients benefit from her expertise and background in legacy planning, investment management and individual tax planning. She has experience helping owners of wealth develop philanthropic mission statements, then advising and monitoring implementation. When working with entrepreneurs, Kelly focuses on helping them to retain liquidity outside of their business or venture activities. She encourages people to step back and look strategically at the direction they wish to go, then focuses on implementing the details and stewarding the process through to the desired results. With her background in accounting, Kelly is skilled at working collaboratively with a client’s CPA and attorney to bring about good solutions and positive outcomes. Kelly helped launch Tyee Asset Strategies (now Laird Norton Tyee) in 1995 and served as chief knowledge officer. Previously, she was a tax and financial planning manager at Moss Adams, an accounting, tax and consulting firm, working closely with high-networth individuals and small businesses as they defined and pursued their goals. Prior to Moss Adams, Kelly was a member of the tax staff at Arthur Andersen, serving individual and nonprofit clients. While holding these positions, Kelly worked through nine individual tax seasons, gaining a deep understanding of the impact of filing requirements, when to rely on the services of an accountant, and the effect investment decisions have on taxes. Kelly earned a bachelor’s degree in business with a concentration in accounting from the University of Oregon. She has earned the Certified Public Accountant designation and is a Certified Financial Planner™ professional. She is a member of the Washington Women’s Foundation. KAREN TREIGER Thompson & Howle Karen Treiger is a graduate of Barnard College and New York University School of Law, where she served as Editor-in-Chief of the Law Review. Earlier in her career, Karen served as a Legislative Assistant to Senator Slade Gorton in Washington D.C., specializing in health policy and worked at Davis Wright Tremaine in the area of business law. Karen’s current practice focuses on elder law issues, such as estate planning, long term care planning, guardianships, will contests, probates and special needs trusts. She is a member of the KCBA Guardianship and Elder Law Section and the WSBA Elder Law Section and has four children. ELANA ZAIMAN Rabbi Elana Zaiman is the first woman rabbi from a family spanning three generations of rabbis. She holds a BA in religion and psychology from George Washington University and a MSW from Columbia University School of Social Work. Elana also received MA degrees in Judaic Studies and Hebrew Literature, as well as rabbinic ordination from The Jewish Theological Seminary of America. Currently, Elana is the chaplain for the aged at The Caroline Kline Galland Home and The Summit at First Hill in Seattle, WA. She travels throughout the United States and Canada serving as a scholar-in-residence and visiting rabbi. Prior to her current position, she served as a rabbi at Manhattan’s Park Avenue Synagogue and was also the program director and acting director at Tufts University Hillel in Massachusetts, and program associate and associate scholar-in-residence at Brandeis-Bardin Institute in California.
