Final Exam: There is no final exam. Goals: The goal of this course is to provide future law librarians with a foundation in practical legal research. This basis will help them to assist their patrons in the variety of legal research questions that arise in all types of law libraries. Course Objectives: At the conclusion of this class, students will be able to Conduct efficient and effective legal research on a wide range of topics using primary and secondary legal materials in print and electronic formats Explain to patrons which resources should be used for a particular type of legal research situation and why those resources are the most appropriate Discuss important policy issues in the creation, distribution, and use of legal information Grading Policy: Grades will be based on a combination of projects, class participation, and attendance. The breakdown is listed below: Attendance and Participation Book reviews (2) (15 percent each) Presentation Guides (2) (15 percent each) 10 percent 30 percent 30 percent 30 percent Book reviews: Each “book” review will be a two-page written review of a current legal resource (no footnotes please). Prior approval of the title is required. Submit 3 titles you are interested in reviewing. You may choose almost anything currently used in the legal profession, but I will provide you with a list of suggestions. You may not cover the same titles for book reviews and guides. Each book review is worth 15 percent of the total grade. The Book review will be assessed on the following factors: Clear statement of the positives and negatives of the resource, generally Clear identification of the target audience for the resource (for example, is this resource best used by pro se patrons, law librarians, new attorneys, or senior attorneys in a specialized practice area) Brief recommendation (i.e., would you recommend I buy this resource for my collection) Guides: Each guide will be a one-page (or otherwise very brief) how-to description of a resource. Prior approval of the title is required. Submit 3 titles for which you are interested in creating a guide. You may choose almost anything currently used in the legal profession, but I will provide you with a list of suggestions. You may not cover the same titles for book reviews and guides. Each guide is worth 15 percent of the total grade. You are not limited in the form you choose for your guide – it may be a podcast, a video, a paper pamphlet, an electronic file, a puppet show, etc. The Guide will be assessed on the following factors: Layout, visual clarity, and presentation Appropriateness for intended user group Clarity of explanation Presentation: You will select one resource from a list that I will provide you. You will master the use of that resource and present an explanation of the resource to the class. At the end of your presentation, we will test your explanation of the resource by attempting to answer a “real world” question (that I will provide) using the resource during class time (as a group). I have chosen some very difficult resources for this list, so this will not be as easy as it appears. You may use any teaching aids that you wish for your presentation – PowerPoint, etc. The Presentation will be assessed on the following factors: Clarity of explanation Overall success (with adjustment for difficulty and level of class expertise) Poise, humor, and creativity Course Schedule: All readings are in Course Materials on Blackboard.
