RESOLUTION
APPRECIATION TO HOSTS FOR THE ANNUAL MEETING OF
THE AMERICAN FISHERIES SOCIETY
WHEREAS, the 141st Annual Meeting of the American Fisheries Society convened in Seattle, Washington
on September 4-8, 2011, hosted by the Washington-British Columbia Chapter and the Western Division of
the American Fisheries Society;
WHEREAS, we were able to intermingle with our colleagues and enjoy Seattle, known the world over for
its scenic waterfront, seafood cuisine, music, and rugged mountains;
WHEREAS, our hosts provided a multidisciplinary theme of “New Frontiers in Fisheries Management and
Ecology: Leading the Way in a Changing World,” presented at facilities at the Washington State
Convention Center and The Conference Center and developed an extensive program including hundreds of
oral presentations organized into 95 symposia, 600 oral presentations, and 400 posters, representing authors
from several countries;
WHEREAS, our hosts provided plenary sessions and speakers addressing issues affecting the diversity of
fisheries, habitats, and fisheries science in this ever changing environment;
WHEREAS, our hosts organized a trade show social where attendees were able to check out the latest
technologies and services from over 36 vendors;
WHEREAS, the continuing education committee provided 17 short courses and 2 technology workshops
covering topics including GIS from the basics to advanced, program R, leadership skills, river
morphology and restoration, aquatic habitat mapping using side scan sonar, digital photography, effective
speaking, leading effective technical meetings, collaborative negotiation, structured decision making,
statistical concepts and tools, scientific acoustics, instream habitat simulation, acoustic telemetry
technology, surgical procedures for implanting transmitters and more;
WHEREAS, students were able to mingle at the socials, explore future job opportunities at the career fair at
the Seattle Aquarium;
WHEREAS, we convened for a grand social featuring a salmon barbeque at the Space Needle, at which we
enjoyed an abundance of food and drink. We were able to enjoy the surroundings of the conference
including various museums, history centers, and 8 fisheries habitat-based field trips;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT the membership of the American
Fisheries Society, having enjoyed the hospitality of Seattle, Washington extends its hearty appreciation and
thanks to our hosts, the Washington-British Columbia Chapter of the American Fisheries Society and the
Western Division of the American Fisheries Society, to the General Meeting Co-Chair Cleve Steward and
Larry Dominguez and their Planning Committees; to the Program co-organizers Craig Busack, and Dave
Ward, and their committee members.

EXCELLENCE IN FISHERIES
EDUCATION AWARD
Recognizes excellence in organized teaching and
advising in a field of fisheries.
Recipient: Scott Hinch, Professor, University of British Columbia
● Dr. Scott G. Hinch received his B.S. in Ecology and Evolution from
the University of Western Ontario in 1985; his M.Sc. in Aquatic Ecology
from the same institution in 1988; and his PhD from the University of
Toronto in 1992.
● Dr. Hinch became a post-doctoral fellow at the University of British
Columbia in 1992 and rose through the ranks and became a full professor
in 2005.
● He is largely credited for shaping UBC’s Natural Resources Conservation program into a broad academic curricula that includes fisheries
and aquatic ecology.
● Dr. Hinch is consistently ranked first as an academic instructor among
the 50+ members of the Faculty of Forestry.
● He was awarded the student-nominated Killam Teaching Prize in 2000.
● Dr. Hinch has advised over 1000 undergraduate students.
● Dr. Hinch has supervised 22 MSc and 8 PhD students and mentored
numerous post-doctoral fellows.
● From acknowledged excellence in the classroom, to exceptional devotion
to students, Dr. Scott Hinch exemplifies the qualities sought among recipients
of the Excellence in Fisheries Education Award.

EXCELLENCE IN PUBLIC
OUTREACH AWARD
Presented to an AFS Member who goes the “extra mile”
in sharing the value of fisheries science/research with the
general public through the popular media and other
communication channels.
Recipient: Randall M. Claramunt, Michigan
Department of Natural Resources
 Randall Claramunt has worked as a research
biologist at the Michigan Department of Natural
Resources (MDNR) Charlevoix Fisheries Research
Station for 9 years, leading research and assessment
efforts related to Coregonid and Salmonine
population in Great Lakes systems.
 Randy’s greatest skill as a fisheries scientist is his
ability to translate technical scientific issues for
public understanding.
 Randy has worked to educate the public concerning
Great Lakes fisheries issues through writing popular
articles, making public presentations, and mentoring
fisheries students in the importance of transferring
knowledge of fisheries issues to the public
 Randy has proven himself to be an extremely
effective communicator

J. FRANCES ALLEN
SCHOLARSHIP
Awarded annually to a female AFS Member and doctoral
candidate who is conducting aquatic research.
Award Recipient: Neala W. Kendall,
University of Washington
Plaque and scholarship $
● Neala Kendall graduated from Kenyon College in Ohio in
2001 with a degree in Biology.
● She worked as an environmental consultant for 3 years
then moved on to graduate school.
● Neala received her MS in the School of Aquatic and
Fisheries Sciences at the University of Washington in 2007
and continued on for a PhD.
● Her dissertation focuses on how salmon fisheries for
Bristol Bay sockeye salmon affect age and size at
maturation of populations over time.

Runner-Up: Robin DeBruyne
● Robin L. DeBruyne earned a BS in 2004 and an MS in
2006 from Central Michigan University
● She is a PhD student at Cornell University where her
dissertation research focuses on walleye and yellow perch
population responses to removal of double-crested
cormorants on Oneida Lake.
● She currently serves as President of the Equal
Opportunities Section.

OUTSTANDING CHAPTER AWARDS
Recognizes outstanding professionalism, active resource
protection and enhancement programs, and commitment to the
mission of the Society.
Large Chapter Award (for chapters with 100 members
or more):
Recipient: Oregon Chapter
Accepting: Colleen Fagan, President
Here is a summary of Oregon chapter activities that highlight its
recognition as an outstanding chapter
 It held a well attended and profitable annual meeting even when
in direct competition with the Seattle annual meeting and
restricted travel budgets.
 It has increased student membership and participation in chapter
activities from universities and colleges throughout the state.
 It held a fall symposium that brought together a wide array of
non-fisheries professionals to discuss salmon management in
urban settings.
 The chapter has increased participation in legislative issues
through white papers, testimony, and meetings with leadership
from conservation and resource management organizations.

Small Chapter Award (for chapters with less than 100
members):
Recipient: Indiana Chapter
Accepting: Reuben Goforth, Perdue University
 The Chapter held its 2011 annual meeting with the Indiana
Chapter of The Wildlife Society. A panel of exemplary
speakers addressed the topic, “Ecological disasters and the
aftermath – What have we learned?
 It donated funds to help mitigate the effects of the Deep
Horizon oil spill and to the Japanese Society of Fisheries
Science to assist colleagues in recovering from the earth quake.
 The Chapter has Facebook and Twitter pages to update
members and other organizations on Chapter events and
relevant news.

Outstanding Student Subunit Award
Recipient: North Carolina State University
Accepting: Joshua Raabe and Mike Waine, co-presidents (and
several students)
 The student subunit has worked to enhance professional
development of its members by bringing in diverse
fisheries professionals as speakers, by providing hands-on
field experiences, and by supporting student travel to
meetings.
 It has also undertaken many service and educational
outreach activities for local schools, state agencies, and
the general public.
 It has played a major role in helping the North Carolina
Chapter host the 2010 Southern Division meeting in
Asheville, NC, including running a highly successful
raffle.
 The subunit is strongly represented at Chapter, Division,
and Parent Society meetings, both in attendance and by
quality technical presentations by students.

Steven Berkeley Marine Conservation
Fellowship
This fellowship was created by AFS in 2007 to honor the memory of
Steven Berkeley, a dedicated fisheries scientist with a passionate
interest in integrating the fields of marine ecology, conservation
biology, and fisheries science to improve fisheries management. The
fellowship comprises a competitively based $10,000 award to a
graduate student actively engaged in thesis research relevant to marine
conservation.
