NO MEETING IN DECEMBER
LADIES DAY LUNCHEON -- WEDNESDAY, DEC. 17
NEXT MEETING -- THURSDAY, JANUARY 8
BIG SIR MESSAGE: SAM ZORICH samzorich@yahoo.com 376-7799
So what did we accomplish this year?
Membership remained the same. We renewed our lease for 3 years at the same rate with
the Church; thank you Little Sir Tim Freeman. Humberto provided us with great
luncheons. I was unable to get the Board to buy 10 SIR hats.......so, I purchased the 10
hats and sold seven. I was able to obtain one free lunch for the Hawaiian shirt contest.
Also, the Board approved one free lunch for a SIR with perfect attendance for this year. I
hope we keep those two free lunches next year.
For 2015 the Board is considering a free lunch for the sponsor of a new SIR. (Ray Horton
will probably eat free all year). Our three bartenders (Rick, Lou, & Larry) provided us with
excellent beverages. We enjoyed reaching 20 years as a SIR Branch in November; Tom Marnane did an
excellent presentation of our 20 year history. Thank you.
Our 20 plus activities were participated with over 70 percent attendance. Terrific! I publicly would like to thank
the Board for working smoothly. We need to appreciate the work done by the "behind the scenes"
SIRs........like microphone duty, collecting lunch money, providing our badges, telephone call-ins, coordinating
with our caterer, the SIRpremes and others I probably don't know. And best of all, I believe the friendship and
comradeship of Branch 171 was great. Thank you - all.
Thank you Mike and Pete for all the work to make our annual Ladies Day Christmas luncheon a success. We
will have the Devil Mountain Choir this year for our Christmas entertainment.
Finally.... do we really have to accomplish anything? We have no agenda but to enjoy each other. Merry
Christmas and a healthy New Year. See you around.
Big SIR Sam
LITTLE SIR PROGRAM: TIM FREEMAN timfre@comcast.net 283-5945
This year is fast approaching an end! As you know we will not be having a December
speaker so it’s my chance to say so long as your Little Sir. I hope you’ve enjoyed our
speakers this year and I know great things are in store for you next year from our incoming
Little Sir Tom Marnane. Tom has already lined up excellent speakers, so stay tuned. As
for me I’ll be moving into those huge shoes left by Big Sir Sam Zorich.
Our speaker for the November 5th luncheon was Sam Richards, Editor of the Walnut
Creek Journal and Lamorinda Sun and an Assistant Editor of the Contra Costa Times.
Sam gave a brutally honest picture of the newspaper industry, in some respects grim while
in others not so bad. Some key points of his talk:

The major trend throughout the newspaper industry is that more and more news reporting is happening
online and less is happening in print. The newspaper print industry is shrinking, which ultimately translates
to fewer resources to do the job. The good news is that 80% of online news reporting currently comes from
the newspapers. As print revenue is declining the on line revenue is growing.

Sam believes the newspaper print industry will never completely go away. There will be a demand at some
level for the hard copy. The question remains how much revenue can be generated for the industry
through online reporting.
Finally, I would like to take a brief look back at this year’s speakers program. Here’s a summary of who we
saw and heard:

KNOW YOUR SIR
Francis Wong
Francis grew up in Hong Kong and moved to the United States in 1986. When the Wong family moved to Moraga in 1989,
their two daughters were at age of 8 and 10. They both graduated from Campolindo High School before completing higher
education at Cornell University and UCLA. Their elder daughter and family now live in Hanoi, Vietnam, working for an
International Hotel Group. The younger daughter is a resident of Alameda.
Francis retired from the Transportation Industry in January 2013. During his working years, he has lived in Singapore,
Hong Kong and China with travels to many countries around the world. His retirement allows him to spend his time babysitting their 2 year old twin granddaughters as well as serving as volunteer driver with "Senior Help Lines" in Lafayette,
Moraga, Orinda, Walnut Creek and Alameda. He is also a member of the Kiwanis Club of Moraga Valley.
As to hobbies, Francis enjoys golfing, swimming, walking and mahjong. He and his wife, Cindy, are members of the San
Francisco Chinese Golf Club. They golf at least once every week, in addition to walking some of the trails in Moraga.

The SIRpremes are basically a barbershop octet. We sing songs in four-part harmony. By having two
people on each part, the problems caused by absences are greatly reduced – obviously. We meet just
about every Tuesday for one hour. We take a few minutes to discuss the affairs of the world, and then get
down to business, working on one or two songs, finishing by partaking of some delicious cookies, freshly
baked by Brad’s wife, Carol. Our self-determined purpose has been to add a little variety to the monthly
luncheon meetings of Branches 171 and 174, plus the Christmas luncheon with our ladies. Our only other
singouts have been for the Moraga Movers and at Sam Zorich’s birthday party.

HOLIDAY.
Harry Sherinian led 8 fellow fishermen to the Antioch pier for a morning of fishing
for small stripers and a hot chili shore lunch. Many, many stripers were caught
and released, and a good time was had by all. Tom Kostik took Harry, Mike
Corker, Pete Gates and Terry Miller out plugging for stripers, and many fish
were caught and also released. Terry and Mike on a separate trip caught a
delicious 12 lb striper and released a beautiful 27 inch steelhead. Terry Miller,
Chuck Vanoncini, Ernie Wong, and Harry Sherinian fished Lake Davis for trout
on 2 very windy, nasty days for a few good sized rainbows. Dick Thomson, Karl
Droese, and Gene Shulting fished the delta for stripers and salmon with good
weather, but poor fishing. Crab season opened, and everyone who participated came back with big dungeness crabs.
Our December schedule includes our annual holiday dinner, a planning meeting for our 2015 calendar of events, trips to
the Delta, Shadow Cliffs and shore fishing. Our 2015 schedule will be published in December. We will be very busy this
winter with: Delta fishing for bass, catfish, bluegill, crappie, striped bass, and sturgeon; trout in mountain and local lakes;

WALKING (and talking):
AL DONNER (Br. 171) aajdonner@gmail.com 376-1594
LYLE DECK (Br. 174) lgdeck@aol.com 254-3829
This is a great season of the year to stretch your legs and get some exercise --for your legs and mind-- at the
same time. The weather is beautiful and our 9 a.m. start every Tuesday from the church has taken us on a lot
of fine walks recently.
Recently we've walked in Briones Park, along the L-M Trail to the nearby end of Upper San Leandro
Reservoir, on a new path along the north side of Briones Reservoir, and on a neat segment of the Lafayette-Moraga trail
that loops just behind downtown Lafayette--but you'd never know it since it is so well shaded from the urban world!
And we do a powerful lot of talking as we go, a nice bonus for your exercise.
We have walkers of all ages and paces from the two Lamorinda SIRS groups, so there are always enjoyable folks to walk
with. So come on out, as the spirit moves you. Be at the church by 9 am any Tuesday (we walk on all of them).
WINE TASTING: GENE BELL (Br. 171) gdbell1@comcast.net 284-1786
JON LEUTENEKER (Br. 174) jonleuteneker@comcast.net 376-7035

about 7:00 p.m. with a cost per person averaging about $15. Jon Leuteneker is chairman of the
group that meets on the second Tuesday of each month - this group has a full roster. Gene Bell is
chairman of the group that meets on the third Tuesday of each month - membership in this group
may still open.
