SIR BRANCH 171
May 2015
http://branch171.sirinc2.org/
A Non-Profit Public Benefit Corporation for Retired Men Devoted to the
Promotion of Independence and Dignity of Retirement
Our next meeting will be Wednesday, May 6
Holy Trinity Serbian Orthodox Church Hall
1700 School St., Moraga
Social time begins at 11
Meeting begins at 11:40
BIG SIR MESSAGE: TIM FREEMAN, timfre@comcast.net 283-5945
Spring is here and that means get outdoors! Well, that’s what we say in Minnesota this
time of year, we also say you betcha! Here in Lamorinda we say it’s Bocce time.
Season starts Tuesday May 5th at Moraga Commons. Bill Bondy (254-1266) is Chair.
Call Bill for more information or just show up. Games start promptly at 10:00 and go to
Noon.
This month we are starting the Ambassador Program. This program is intended to
provide a focus on helping new members get the most out of SIR. Ambassadors will
look for new members at meetings (i.e. those with red dots on their name badge) to answer any questions they
may have, help to identify activities that may be of interest and connect the new member with activity chairs,
help find seating at the meeting, and just help to ensure the new member feels connected to our Branch.
Great for the club and great for the new member. Please contact Sam Zorich (376-7799) if you would like to
be a SIR 171 Ambassador.
Remember the SIR business card? That is a small wallet-sized card that can be given to prospective
members with information about our club. If your badge number is drawn at the May meeting, and you have a
signed SIR card in your possession, you will win a vintage bottle of 2012 BV Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon.
Additional cards are located at the registration table when you need more.
Good news! We now have three prospective new members who are scheduled to be inducted at our May
luncheon. This is proof our effort to bring guests to our meetings is working. Keep up the good work!
It’s my privilege to periodically recognize and thank individuals for their work in making our Branch successful.
This month I want to tip my hat and thank our Bar Tenders for the great job they our doing. Every month this
team keeps us happily in beer, wine and soft drinks. Rick Fend, Lew Edwards and Larry Correia you guys
are the best. Thank you for the great job you do. There’s a lot of work that goes into keeping the bar well
stocked and these men see to it that it happens every month. So when you next go to the bar give them a big
thank you!
Lastly, a bit of unfortunate news. Monte Logan, our Sunshine Reporter whose job it is to bring to our attention
members who are under the weather, has himself been under the weather. Both he and his wife Melisse had
to go the emergency room for different reasons during this past month. They are now back home recovering
and Monte is hoping to be at our May luncheon.
That’s it for now. See you May 6th.
Big SIR Tim
LITTLE SIR PROGRAM: TOM MARNANE, chartom@pacbell.net 376-6312
Gentlemen,
Our speaker for Wednesday 6 May is Fred Lezak.
Bio for Fred Lezak:
Fred is a resident of Moraga and a graduate of St. Mary's College, Pace University
and New York University--Polytechnic School of Engineering. He has an extensive
business career having served as CEO of Synercon and Executive Vice President at
Telegen. In his most recent role he has been a management consultant. Fred is the
leader and chief consultant of F.T. Lezak Associates and serves as the Vice Chairman of the Exit Strategy
Advisory Council. Fred’s focus is strategic planning and budgeting, and business performance optimization and
he is a recognized authority in these fields. Lezak is a frequent speaker, lecturer and seminar facilitator.
Topic:
Fred will speak to us on dealing with ethical and other conflicts that are unique to seniors and retirees and how
to deal with them. Fred has lectured extensively on ethical conflicts in business and in fact many of his
seminars are required checkoffs for CPAs, Lawyers and others to maintain their licenses.
With any kind of luck Fred will get his application in for our next Board meeting and we will be able to induct
him after he speaks for his lunch. Fred is also a very good tenor and has sung with many vocal and band
groups.
April Meeting:
Our speaker last month was John Briscoe who spoke on the Law of the Sea and how it and the Law of the Sea
Treaty (which the US has never ratified) effect the US.
Tom Marnane, Little SIR
ANNOUNCEMENTS
Future Mailing of Newsletter in Adobe PDF format
PDF files are a standard and effective way to send items like the newsletter, which currently is sent via Word.
Branch 174 has been using this approach for quite awhile and it works quite well. Thus, beginning with the
July newsletter, distribution will be via PDF files. In preparation for that, the newsletter this month and next
month will continue to be sent in Word format, but there will also be a test PDF file attached to see if you are
ready for the PDF version in July. If you cannot open the PDF file, download and install a free version of
Adobe Reader (https://get2.adobe.com/reader/). Reply to this email if you have any problems. PLEASE do
not ignore this request or you may not get future newsletters in as timely a manner as you would like.
New Member Team
Branch 171 has a new member recruiting team. Its goal is to find, recruit and retain retirees who will add
enjoyment and energy to the SIRS experience for all of us. At heart we SIRS are a social group so fellows we
can bring in, or get more involved in SIRS activities, should make it a richer experience for all of us.
If you would like to participate in that effort--and it will be a casual exercise--contact Al Donner, who is heading
up the group, at (aajdonner@gmail.com). And if you know of someone who might be interested in SIRS, let Al
know.
Bocce Ball is Upon Us
The season opens on Tuesday, May 5. The courts have been prepared for the season and are in beautiful
condition. Come on by on Tuesdays and/or Fridays at 10:00 at the Moraga Commons and join into the fun !!

Ralph’s role is to keep in close contact with each of the chairmen of the branch activities to understand
what they are doing and how things are going, determine if they are planning any special activities that
they want the rest of the branch to know about, determine if there is anything special that requires
assistance, and understand what a typical activity is like. Also, Ralph keeps in communication with the
other branches in the area to determine if there are activity announcements that should be made to our
branch.
Please let Ralph know if you have any suggestions for additional activities (e.g. Book Club, Chess, Cooking, Current
Events Discussions, etc etc). Also, let Ralph know if you would like to chair any of the open activity groups.
APPLE USERS ACTIVITY: DICK MACY (Br. 171) m.hobie@comcast.net 376-1180
There is a lot going on in the Apple world. At our last meeting we focused on the imminent release of
the Apple iWatch and the new “Photos” application, which is replacing iPhoto and will standardize the
look and feel with the iPad and iPhone photo applications. We also had our monthly roundtable
discussion of Apple Mac computers, iPad, and iPhone applications, had a Q&A on problems, and had a
sharing of new ideas on the use of these devices.
Our meetings are held in the conference room at the CC County Supervisor office at 3338 Mt. Diablo Blvd., Lafayette, on
the fourth Monday of each month at 10:00 AM to noon. The location is the fire station building across the street from El
Charro restaurant. Enter left side door at top of steps. Come and be a part of the group.

The SIRpremes are basically a barbershop octet. We sing songs in four-part harmony. By having two
people on each part, the problems caused by absences are greatly reduced – obviously. We meet just
about every Tuesday for one hour. We take a few minutes to discuss the affairs of the world, and then
get down to business, working on one or two songs, finishing by partaking of some delicious cookies,
freshly baked by Brad’s wife, Carol. Our self-determined purpose has been to add a little variety to the
monthly luncheon meetings of Branches 171 and 174, plus the Christmas luncheon with our ladies. Our
only other singouts have been for the Moraga Movers and at Sam Zorich’s birthday party.

WALKING (and talking):
AL DONNER (Br. 171) aajdonner@gmail.com 376-1594
LYLE DECK (Br. 174) lgdeck@aol.com 254-3829
Our SIRS Walking Group hasn't missed a Tuesday walk in many a month. We start at 9 am from
the parking lot across from the Serbian Church.
Walks are close by and have little up-and-down unless otherwise noted. And the conversation is
non-stop, so you will learn a lot as well as getting some gentle exercise. Another bonus is that we
meet some nice fellows from "the other" branch of SIRS, since this is a joint 171/174 activity.
So check us out. Just show up by 9 am on Tuesday; no RSVPs needed!
And if you want a significantly slower pace, try the Wednesday morning amblers, who also meet at 9
by the church. They walk slower, perhaps a mile total, on flat surfaces, but still have the good conversations and postwalk coffee. Good group for creaky knees!
WINE TASTING: GENE BELL (Br. 171) gdbell1@comcast.net 284-1786
