Vth INTERNATIONAL JAZZ IMPROVISATION COMPETITION RULES
§1
The aim of the Competition is to promote young musicians and to popularize jazz
improvisation as a form of music. We also wish to develop International artistic
contacts among young jazz musicians.
§2
The initiator of the Competition is the Jazz Institute in the Academy of Music,
Katowice.
§3
The maximum age of a competitor is 25.
§4
The Candidates should send by e-mail (jazzimprovisation@am.katowice.pl) or postal
mail (Akademia Muzyczna im. Karola Szymanowskiego, ul. Zacisze 3, 40-025,
Katowice; note: Konkurs Improwizacji Jazzowej) till October 22nd, 2010, the
following:
1. an application form (download)
2. recording (CD or attachment) with 3 pieces (different in character). The total
recording time should not be longer than 15 min.
3. Payment confirmation – 30 EURO for international candidates or 100 PLN for
Polish Candidates as an application fee.

1). The Organizers will not cover accommodation, travel and board expenses.
2). The Competition participants should give their consent to make gratuitous radio
recordings and the Competition winners to take part, without payment, in the public
Prizewinner’s Concert ,which will take place in the Concert Hall of Music Academy
in Katowice( November 19th 2010).
§6
1). The Jury will be formed of eminent musicians and jazz pedagogues.
2). The Jury verdicts are final.
§7
1). The awards of the Competitions will be:
I prize
5.000 PLN
II prize
3.000 PLN
III prize
2.000 PLN
2 distinction diplomas
1.000 PLN each
2). All Participants qualified to the II round of the Competition will receive Diplomas
of Participation. The Finalists will be awarded The Special Diplomas.
§8
1). The Competition will be held in three separated rounds:
ROUND I:
-pre-selection based on CD recordings sent (see § 4 ).
-all Participants will be informed about I round results no later than October 22 nd,
2010.
-There will be max. 25 Candidates accepted to the II round.
ROUND II (November 18th, 2010):
-The Participants should improvise on three standards listed below. There should be
one composition chosen from every after-mentioned group of compositions:
Ballades:
1. “Round About Midnight” – Th. Monk

3. “In A Sentimental Mood” – D. Ellington
4. “Lover Man” – R. Ramirez-J. Davis
5. “Stella By Starlight” – V. Young

Blues:
1. ”Mr. P.C.” – J. Coltrane
2. “Footprints” – W. Shorter
3. “Blues For Alice” – Ch. Parker
4. “Blues March” – B. Golson
5. “Straight, No Chaser” – Th. Monk
6. “All Blues” – M. Davis
7. “Blue Monk” – Th. Monk
8. “Tenor Madness” – S. Rollins
Rhythm Changes:
1. “I Got Rhythm” – G. Gershwin
2. “Oleo” – S. Rollins
3. “Serpent Tooth” – M. Davis
4. “The Theme” – M. Davis
5. “Moose The Mooche” – Ch. Parker
6. “Scrapple From The Apple” – Ch. Parker
7. “Anthropology” – D. Gillespie-Ch. Parker
8. “Rhythm-A-Ning” – Th. Monk
The time of performance cannot exceed 20 minutes.
There will be max. 12 Candidates accepted to the III round.
ROUND III (November 19th, 2010):
The Participants have to improvise on three compositions:
-one discretionary composition
-one designated by the Jury out of the after-mentioned standards
-one drawn by lot form after-mentioned standards:

13.“Caravan“ – J. Tizol-D.Ellington
14.”Beautiful Love” – V. Young
15.”I Remember April” – G. de Paul Johnstone
16.”My Romance” – Rodgers-Hart
17.”Secret Love” – S. Fain
18.”Here’s The Rainy Day” – J. van Heusen

§9
1). The Organizers will provide two rhythm sections (piano, bass, drums) for the
Participants accepted to the II and III Round.
2). The time at a Participant’s disposal for preparing the performance with the
accompanying group will be equal to their performance in a pertinent stage.
3). The Participants will appear in alphabetical order beginning with the name of the
candidate chosen by lot on the opening day of the Competition (November 18th,
2010)
4). Both – II and III round will be opened for the public.
