NSW takes place each year on the third week of October and will be recognized for the sixth year on October 19-23, 2015, in Knoxville, Tennessee, and around the nation. During the week, educators, students, employers and the community participate in a national recognition of how nuclear science plays a vital role in the lives of Americans - and the world. Activities during the week are intended to build awareness of the contributions of the nuclear science industry and those who work in it every day. “Since its inception six years ago, this national nuclear science celebration has grown exponentially each year,” said Jim Walther, Director of the National Museum of Nuclear Science & History and Chair of the NSW Steering Committee. “The contributions of nuclear science are many, and recognizing the importance of nuclear innovations in medicine, energy and social responsibilities is crucial in providing the public with pertinent information about our future as a nation.” A number of local events take place all over the nation during Nuclear Science Week. It is celebrated in cities big and small, and any community is invited to get involved and host a Nuclear Science Week celebration. Each year a different city is chosen to host a “Big Event,” and smaller celebrations take place throughout the country. This year’s Big Event will be held from October 22-24, 2015, in Knoxville, TN. Additional events will take place in the previous cities that held the NSW Big Events including Chicago, IL, Aiken, SC, Augusta, GA and Albuquerque, NM. Nuclear Science Week is a partnership between the host organization, the National Museum of Nuclear Science & History, located in Albuquerque, NM, and nuclear industry partners. Individuals from such organizations as the Nuclear Literacy Project, the American Nuclear Society, the North American Young Generation in Nuclear and the National Science Teachers Association comprise the NSW national steering committee that orchestrates NSW every year. Sponsors for the 2015 Nuclear Science Week celebration include Albert I. Pierce Foundation, American Nuclear Society Oak Ridge/Knoxville Section, American Museum of Science & Energy, East Tennessee Health Physics Society, Idaho National Laboratories, Lockheed Martin/Sandia National Laboratories and Oak Ridge National Laboratory.
