Figurative Speech 1. simile -- a figure of speech directly expressing a resemblance, in one or more points, of one thing to another; expression describing a person or thing as being similar to someone or something else. indicator/marker: like as … as thought as if e.g. a) She runs like a deer. b) He’s as white as a sheet. c) He was as mad as a cut snake. 2. metaphor, metaphorical -- a figure of speech, an imaginative way of describing something by referring to something else which has the qualities that you want to express used to suggest a resemblance between two objects, e.g. a) He is a cunning fox. b) He was lost in a sea of words. repetition 3. penetration -- using the same word again to achieve a desirable effect – strong e.g. start 4. onomatopoeia- Onomatopoeia The use of words whose sounds express or suggest their meaning. In its simplest sense, onomatopoeia may be represented by words that mimic the sounds they denote such as "hiss" or "meow." At a more subtle level, the pattern and rhythm of sounds and rhymes of a line or poem may be onomatopoeic.
