Algebra I Worksheets – Investigating Linear Equations Athena Matherly athenarl@yahoo.com or amatherly@flvs.net Grade Level: 6-8th grade Time Frame: Slope – Part 1 – 30-60 minutes Slope – Part 1 Practice – 15-30 minutes Slope – Part 2 – 45-75 minutes Slope – Part 2 Practice – 30-45 minutes Slope Intercept Form – 15-30 minutes Point-Slope Form – 30-45 minutes Standard Form – 15-30 minutes Horizontal Lines – 15-30 minutes Vertical Lines – 15-30 minutes Parallel Lines – 30-45 minutes Perpendicular Lines – 30-60 minutes Learning Outcomes After completing all 11 worksheets the students should be able to do the following: Find the slope of a line given the line Find the slope of a line given two points Graph a line in Slope-Intercept Form Identify the slope and y-intercept of an equation in Slope-Intercept Form Identify the slope and a given point of an equation in Point-Slope Form Graph a line in Point-Slope Form Identify the intercepts of an equation in Standard Form Graph a line in Standard Form Write the equation and graph horizontal and vertical lines Determine whether two linear equations are parallel Determine whether two linear equations are perpendicular Prerequisite Knowledge The student should be able to add, subtract, multiply, and divide positive and negative numbers, and understand the fundamentals behind solving equations. Student Materials The student will need a computer, the worksheets (file names below), paper, pencil, and a calculator. Slope – Part 1 – slope1.html and slope1_worksheet.ggb Slope – Part 1 Practice – slope_prac.html and slope_prac_worksheet.ggb Slope – Part 2 – slope.html and slope_worksheet.ggb Slope – Part 2 Practice – slope_2_prac.html and slope_2_prac_worksheet.ggb Slope-Intercept Form – slope_intercept_form.html and slope_intercept_form_worksheet.ggb Point-Slope Form – point_slope_form_WS.html and point_slope_form_WS_worksheet.ggb Standard Form – standard_form_WS.html and standard_form_WS_worksheet.ggb Horizontal Lines – horizontal_lines_WS.html and horizontal_lines_WS_worksheet.ggb Vertical Lines – vertical_lines_WS.html and vertical_lines_WS_worksheet.ggb Parallel Lines – parallel_lines_2.html and parallel_lines_2_worksheet.ggb Perpendicular Lines – perpendicular_lines_WS.html and perpendicular_lines_WS_worksheet.ggb Teacher Materials The teacher will need the same file names as the students. Technology The teacher and students will need to have Java installed on the computers. Procedure These worksheets are designed so that the student can use them independently. However, I would use the worksheets as an additional resource when I teach the lesson. I wouldn’t use them as a replacement to teaching the lesson. You could either show the worksheet on a projector and go through the questions with the students together, or if each student has access to a computer they could do it on their own with your assistance readily available if needed. If you don’t have enough computers for each student to have his/her own these worksheets could also be used with the students in pairs. I would suggest providing the students with a hand out of practice problems for when they finish the questions on each worksheet. They could work on the problems and check their answers using the worksheet (if time permits). Practice worksheets are provided for the two slope worksheets and are in the works for the others.
