Fact Sheet Date : 09 May 2013 Subject: INTEGRATION MANAGEMENT The integration of the Gautrain system with other public transport services remains one of the primary objectives of the Gautrain Management Agency (GMA). The GMA advocates the coordination of transport activities to maximise the efficiency of public transport services and contribute to the economic growth and development of the Gauteng Province. Strategic objectives have been developed to enhance the integration of the Gautrain System with the other public transport services. The following focus areas have been identified and form the basis of integration management: stakeholder engagement; station integration; feeder and distribution services integration; spatial integration; and ticketing interoperability. The GMA has continuous engagements with the City of Johannesburg (CoJ), City of Tshwane (CoT), Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM) and Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA) to discuss integration. The stakeholder engagements facilitate the alignment of transport plans, the improvement of operational integration and the improvement of the passenger experience. The GMA is involved in the following integration initiatives that are based on the strategic objectives. 1. Park Station Integration The GMA, CoJ and PRASA developed a plan to improve integration of various modes of public transport services at Park Station. The focus areas included the integration of bus routes (Gautrain, Rea Vaya and Metrobus), the improvement of accessibility, the improvement of signage, the development of an integrated transport map and integrated communication. The public transport interface at Park station includes the Gautrain, Metrorail, Rea Vaya, Metrobus and other long distance transport services. The Metrobus routes were re-routed and a bus stop provided adjacent to Park Station. The signage directing passengers to the various modes of transport has been implemented, however additional signage will be implemented on the completion of the PRASA enhancement project. The first phase of accessibility improvement was completed with the construction of an additional walkway. The integrated transport map for Park Station was developed (attached). The map highlights the available bus services, the routes, the frequency of the services and points of interest. The distribution will be done collectively by the transport service providers at the completion of the printing process. Page 2 2. Park and Ride Study The GMA appointed a service provider to conduct a feasibility study for Park & Ride and Ride Sharing sites. The purpose of the study is to identify possible park & ride sites along major public transport routes in order to encourage commuters to use public transport. There is also an opportunity to alleviate the parking capacity challenges at Gautrain stations. It is expected that the feasibility study report will be delivered in June 2013. 3. Tshwane Rapid Transport (TRT) planning The GMA is involved in the consultation forums and planning of the TRT. The TRT station has already been completed opposite Hatfield Station and will form part of the proposed route to Pretoria CBD. The TRT will provide a feeder and distribution service at Hatfield and Pretoria stations. The GMA has been involved from the planning phase in order to enhance the integration of public transport services. 4. Marlboro Station Shuttle The Linbro Park Shuttle service operated by a taxi-owned company from Marlboro Station continues to provide an excellent quality of service to commuters. There are plans to extend the shuttle service to service other routes in the vicinity of Marlboro. The proposed routes include two additional routes to Woodmead and Greenstone. Additional details on the development of these services will be communicated prior to implementation. Page 3 The above initiatives provide an overview of some of the integration initiatives spearheaded by the GMA. There is still much to be done collectively to improve mobility of public transport passengers. Continuous engagement with other public transport service providers and the alignment of transport plans is essential in order to provide an integrated and seamless public transport service. The development of ticketing interoperability is imperative in order to enhance public transport services. The GMA will continue to focus on the integration of the Gautrain system with other public transport services and the development of other public transport solutions. Page 4
