Grade 9 Geography: 5 Themes of a CITY - A Report with 19 pages

4 periods are booked in a computer lab booked to gather information and prepare the report.
You will also need to schedule time outside of class to complete this project.
FORMAT: A PowerPoint file or a MICROSOFT WORD format (must work on school computers).
- submit your 5 themes report file to your hand-in folder in the course folder on or before the due date.
(Caution: this a major year-end project and there isn’t time for late hand-ins at the end of the year)
DETAILS
 One assigned major Canadian city will be the focus for your research – from a list your teacher has
 Gather information from the Internet and other sources (use reference page /bibliography as a guide-on back)

 EXPECTED FORMAT OF REPORT: (include all items in the following order)
1) Project Title page, (Name, date, course, city name, 2 captioned images that relate well to your city)
2) Location Title page: (theme definition- sub-theme names, 2 captioned images, most important Location fact)
3) Absolute location sub-theme page (define absolute location, include many specific facts about your
city that relate to this sub-theme, (latitude/longitude, postal code, area codes, etc., need one image
4) Relative location sub-theme (define relative location, include many specific facts about your
city that relate to this sub-theme e.g. how far from W-O and important other places, one image)
5) Place Title page (theme definition- sub-theme names, 2 captioned images, most important Place fact)
6) Human characteristics sub-theme page, (definition, many facts – stats and more, one image)
7) Physical Characteristics sub-theme page (definition, facts – climate stats and more, one image)
8) Movement Title page (theme definition- sub-theme names, 2 captioned images, most important Movement fact)
9) People Movement sub-theme page (definition, facts –bus, airport, train &more, one image)
10) Goods movement sub-theme page (definition, facts – trucking, couriers, etc., one image)
11) Ideas Movement sub theme page definition, facts – radio, TV, newspapers, etc., one image)
12) Region Title page (theme definition- sub-theme names, 2 captioned images, most important REGION fact)
13) Regions within my city sub-theme page
(one neighbourhood association information and tourism attractions, needs information and images)
14) Larger regions that my city is located within sub-theme page.
(i.e. feature of provincial political region like driving age, tax rate. (specific information and one image )
15) Human Environment Interaction (HEI) Title page
(theme definition- sub-theme names, 2 captioned images, most important H-E-I fact)
16), 17) This theme needs 2 sub-themes to show the unique qualities of your city.
choose from i) Waste management methods – Landfill and garbage collection, Recycling.

ii) Water – a) Sewage treatment of waste water and b) Drinking water sources/ methods
iii) Specific “green initiatives” that the city is bragging about
18) Livability SCORE and paragraph
a) Give your city a city a score out of 10 based on how good or bad it is as a place to live.
(10 =outstanding, 9=very good, 8=good, 7=satisfactory, 5 to 6 =poor, 0 to 4= not good at all)
b) WRITE a PARAGRAPH defending your score (see below for working form)
Defend (explain/justify your rating). Use 3 points of evidence for your paragraph
(use the “short” 8 sentence method – 1. topic sentence– 2. point1, 3. proof1, 4. point2,
5. proof2, 6. point3, 7. proof3, 8. Final/concluding sentence )
19) At the end include a “bibliography page” that lists sources of your information.
