Manhattan, NY www.tribecapac.org

ABOUT DISTINCTLY AKIN: Artistic Director Christal Brown takes inspiration for Distinctly Akin from actress, poet and activist Beah Richards and her work "A Black Woman Speaks...of White

Womanhood, of White Supremacy, of Peace." Through dance, text and music, Distinctly Akin explores relationships among women across cultural lines. Brown explains, "Women of all

cultures have been disenfranchised, yet they have endured. Having suffered as second-class citizens - being mutilated and inflicting harm on ourselves in the name of an ideal measure of beauty - our saving grace is our solidarity.”

Drawing on INSPIRIT’s mission of collaboration, company members Rhea Patterson and

Paloma McGregor have contributed choreography for Distinctly Akin , imbuing the work with

INSPIRIT’s signature spiritual exuberance, ancestral strength, startling perception, and a rich movement vocabulary drawing from postmodern forms, traditional West African dance, ballet, yoga, and theater.

Composer Kala Pierson has worked alongside INSPIRIT to create an integrated score of original and pre-recorded compositions; original text has been written for Distinctly Akin by playwright/director Patricia McGregor and actress Dawanda Wise.
