SAB members are selected as either at-large members or representatives of student organizations on campus with an interest in diversity. SAB members engage and discuss ongoing issues related to diversity at the University of Washington (UW). They advise the Vice President; seek to impact UW policy formulation and decision-making about diversity; work to foster an environment in which all students achieve their full potential as leaders; and work to enhance sensitivity to diversity on campus through networking and resource development. The course provides them with the leadership training needed to resolve policy issues that have been identified by student organizations or by the various diverse communities on campus. Course Objectives: Course readings, assignments and discussions have been designed to address the following learning objectives: Enhance ability to assess the political, policy, management and other contexts in which diversity policy at the University of Washington is reviewed, formulated, and adopted Broaden aptitude for assessing barriers to student success and developing recommendations that might address those barriers Increase capacity to construct policy alternatives; use established criteria to weigh options; determine a course of action; and consider implementation steps Expand knowledge about the broad continuum of diversity in higher education Enhance ability to engage in critical dialogue with others including those with different views and perspectives Introduction to and understanding of diversity-related research in higher education 1 Required Reading Bowman, N. and Brandenberger, J., (2012). The paper is an opportunity for you to reflect on course objectives and comment on how your knowledge or understanding about diversity at the UW has been impacted during the course. The paper should include reflections about the topics discussed during the quarter and their relevance to your success as a student leader or undergraduate at UW. I have outlined a couple of ways for you to meet the paper requirement. One option is to write a summary paper that includes your observations and reflections about one or more of the topics covered during the quarter. You should reflect on what was covered in class and any unanswered questions you might have about the topic(s). You should tell me how you think you might encounter this topic in your registered student organization or as an undergraduate student. The other option is to submit a weekly journal about each week of the course. Include your thoughts on the relevance of each week’s topic to your interest in diversity at UW, your registered student organization or as an undergraduate student. This paper should be at least 3 and no more than 5 pages. It should be submitted by email to sredward@uw.edu no later than 5pm on Monday, March 12th. 2 COURSE SCHEDULE January 9 4:00 - 5:30 January 16 January 23 SAB Fall Orientation (representatives, proxies and ex-officio members only) Holiday (No Meeting) 4:00 – 5:30 5:30 – 6:00 SAB Leadership Development & Planning Meeting (representatives, proxies and ex-officio members only) SAB Steering Committee (officers and advisors only) January 30 4:00 – 5:30 SAB General Meeting (open to entire community) February 6 4:00 – 5:30 5:30 – 6:00 SAB Leadership Development & Planning Meeting (representatives, proxies and ex-officio members only) SAB Steering Committee (officers and advisors only) 4:00 – 5:30 SAB General Meeting (open to entire community) February 13 February 20 February 27 Holiday (No Meeting) 4:00 – 5:30 5:30 – 6:00 SAB Leadership Development & Planning Meeting (representatives, proxies and ex-officio members only) SAB Steering Committee (officers and advisors only) March 5 4:00 – 5:30 SAB General Meeting (open to entire community) March 12 5:00 PM Finals Week, Final Paper Due 3
