Sociology
The Sociology Major requires a minimum of 34 semester hours (10 courses) in Sociology and the Sociology Minor requires a
minimum of 21 hours (6 courses) in sociology.
Major Requirements:

Student majors must take all courses in the foundations core category and one course in the experiential/capstone core
category.

Student majors must also select at least one course from each of the area category groupings (see below).

Student majors must develop a concentration by taking at least three courses in one particular area.

Student majors must take at least 2 area courses above the 300 level, and 1 400 level area course.
Minor Requirements:

Minors must take all courses in the foundations core category excluding the experiential/capstone care category.

Minors must complete a course in at least 2 area category groupings, one of which must be at least a 300 level beyond the
core courses.
Vertical Integration within the Major/Minor, moving from establishing the foundations of the discipline to application:

200 level courses: No Prerequisites (Breadth/problems component of major; revolve around specific themes/topics) 3 or 4
hours

300 level courses: Prerequisites any 200 level Sociology course (Courses at the 300 level constitute in-depth explorations
of specific topics and subject areas in sociology and anthropology enhanced with several appropriate research and
theoretically based exercises) 3 or 4 hours

400 level courses: Prerequisites 200 and 300 (Advanced courses containing a significant research project with a seminar
approach to advanced readings) 3 or 4 hours
*FYC courses, Special Topics Courses (SOCI 381-384), Honors Course Offerings (HONR XXX), and transfer courses (030 &
040 categories) will be designated in category groupings by the Department Chair based on course content.
