Lesson X
Sound:
x [as in box]
Core Activity:
Game: ‘Fox in the Box Pelmanism’
Materials:
Phonics Bag
Letter Flashcard for x
Flashcards for ‘Fox in the Box Pelmanism’:
foxes of different colours (each colour x 2) with a box on the reverse (8)
Additional Picture Flashcards: six, ox
Letter Flashcards for qu, z, x for ‘Slap the Board’
Phonic Word Builder
Letter/Sound Awareness:
Although our approach has been to
introduce each letter/sound as the first
letter of the word to make it easier for
the students to differentiate the sound,
this is not possible with the letter x as it
does not make its normal sound when it is
in the initial position. Do not use words
such as xylophone and x-ray as the x here
does not make the usual x sound heard in
words like fox and box. Refer to Primary
Phonics One CD for help with
pronunciation.
Lesson X
Action:
The students cross their arms to make an
x shape.

Procedure
Notes
Pre-task
 Gradually reveal the letter x flashcard from the
Phonics Bag and encourage the students to guess
which letter it is. Put the letter x flashcard on the
board.
 Introduce the x sound and action.
 Draw three blank spaces on the board, representing
each letter of the word fox.
 Tell the students that the blanks are for the letters
of a word.
 Draw a simple face on the board.
 Ask the students to guess a letter, ensuring that
they pronounce the letter phonically. If they guess
correctly put the letter in place. If they do not guess
correctly, then wipe a part of the face off. Continue
until they have spelt the word fox.
 Put the fox flashcard on the board.
 Repeat with box and six.
You can draw the letter on the board slowly
and encourage the students to guess which
letter it is.
Draw a 3 letter blank, like this: _ _ _.
Draw a simple face, like this:
The students may call out letter name. You
can do the action to remind them of the
sounds.
Encourage the students to do the actions
as they call out the sounds.
Task
 Show the students the coloured fox flashcards.
Quickly review the different colours.
 Put the flashcards on the board so that the box
pictures face the students.
 Play the Fox in the Box Pelmanism game with the
students.
o Ask a student to come to the front of the class
and choose one of the cards. Encourage the
students to use the target language ‘What’s in the
box?’
o Turn the card over and elicit the target language:
‘It’s a (blue) fox.’ Put this card on the board face
up.
o The student then has to find a matching card with
the same coloured fox. When the match is found,
leave the flashcards face up. If no match is
found, turn the cards back so the box is facing
the students.
o Continue with this game until all of the cards have
been matched.

Post-task
 Review the x sound and encourage the students to do
the action.
 Write ox on the board and ask the students to spell
it out phonically. Add f and then b as initial
consonants and ask the students to spell these words
phonically.
 Ask the students to fill in their Phonic Word Builder
for fox, box, ox and six on the x page.
 Play ‘Slap the Board’ to revise the letters and sounds
learned so far.
o Put the students into teams.
o Put the letter flashcards for x, z and qu on the
board, reviewing the sounds as you do. Bring one
student from each team to the front and say a
letter sound. The first student to slap the right
letter gets a point for their team.
