Freshmen Seminar Lesson Plan Topic: Nutrition Length of Class: 55 minutes Does this lesson require a “pre-class” activity? YES Pre-class Activity 1. Create a seven day meal tracking sheet for each student in your class. The sheet should allow students to write down what they eat for the seven days prior to your next class. The sheet should have spaces for daily meals (breakfast, lunch, dinner) and snacks. Objective: 1. Present healthy eating styles and help students gain a better understanding of nutrition information. 2. The class will allow students to evaluate their daily eating habits. 3. The class will help to educate students about campus resources that can contribute to healthy eating habits and exercise. Class outline: 1. Attendance & Announcements 2. Introduction to Nutrition a. Explain the food pyramid and what the average person should be eating everyday. b. Utilize chapter 6 in the Your First Year at Stony Brook text for information. c. Utilize the following website about eating healthy on a college campus: www.ynhh.or/online/nutrition/advisor/nutrition_101.html 3. Have an open discussion about why eating healthy and staying fit is not only important for individual health but success in the classroom. 4. Have the students break into small groups and create two lists. a. List one will be all the ways students can eat healthy in the dining halls and stay active on campus. b. List two will describe the top 10 ways that students can easily eat unhealthy and become lethargic in their new environments. 1 5. As a homework assignment have the students review their meal tracking sheets. Have them journal or write a brief paper regarding their thoughts about their eating habits after this class. Have them discuss in their paper or journal why they chose to eat what they did and would they could have done differently. Activities: Meal tracking sheet. Small group discussion.
