traffic will be in operation setting up for the event and the proceeding public event that evening.
Competitors are to be considerate of, and respect the privacy of the residents.
Race conduct
Swim
20. The start will take place in the water 20 off the steps. The course is an out and back route
marked every 50m by buoys. The leads swimmers will be led around the course by canoeists.
Water safety will be provided by Tonbridge Waterways who operate the lake through the season.
The exit is via a sloping concrete (carpeted) boating ramp. In accordance with BTF rules a wetsuit
will be required if water temperature is below 14OC and optional between 14OC and 22OC; the
water temperature will be made available on the day.
21. Canoes will be on hand to guide you and provide safety cover. If you get into difficulty, turn
on your back and raise one arm; a canoe will then escort you to the bank or one of the safety
boats. If you appear to be struggling in the swim, or if you have been in the water for a protracted
period, you may be asked to withdraw from the race.
22. Water samples will be taken before the race and the results made available. However, it
should be noted that United Kingdom inland waters are not completely safe for swimming.
Although risks of disease are low and risks of serious infection are small, swimmers may be
susceptible to infection through immune suppression; particularly if they are not in good health at
the time of swimming the therefore, if you are unwell you should seriously consider the implications
of racing.
Cycle
23. Transition to the bike from the swim is via a 100m grass path. Once your helmet is fastened
you can take your bike off the rack and leave transition through the Southern end of the fenced
area. You will not be allowed to mount your bike until after the first ramp on the main exit/entry
road to Hever Castle. The mount/dismount area will be marshalled. A line of cones down the
centre of this road will split the outgoing and incoming cycle traffic onto and off the estate. Once
out on the public road the course will be marked by a combination of race marshals wearing high
visibility jackets and race signage (black writing on luminous yellow boards). The cycle route is
posted on the race website www.castletriathlonseries.co.uk (look under Hever Castle race and
related information) and at Enclosure 1. There will be markers every kilometre all the way around
the bike course. Cyclists will complete two loops of the bike course. On return to transition cyclists
will be required to dismount their bikes at the demount speed ramp and then run to the northern
end of transition to enter the Transition Area through the Entry Only Gate. All cyclists must wear
an approved (ANSI/SNELL) cycle helmet which must be fastened before taking your bike from
transition until re mounting your bike after the cycle leg is complete. Failure to do so is an
automatic DQ.
24. Competitors are reminded that the cycle section is on open roads, the Highway Code must
be obeyed at all times. Any reported infringements will result in a DQ and possible ban from future
events. Failure to adhere to the Highway Code not only poses a danger to the competitor and
other road users, but also threatens the continuation of races as the authorities are becoming
increasingly wary of races on the highway.
25. Race Marshals are not permitted under British law to stop traffic and will not do so under any
circumstances. They are there to give direction only and they will not advise you as to whether it is
safe to go. If a marshal directs you to slow or stop there will be a legitimate reason and you must
adhere to their instruction. Competitors are responsible for making their own decisions as to
whether it is safe to proceed or not, and if in doubt stop. This race is a non-drafting race for all
categories. Time penalties and DQ’s will be issued by the referee for infringements. Under new
guidelines it is not required for the referee to inform you until the event is completed. Athletes are
asked to remain courteous on the road even if some other road users may not offer you the same
respect.
Run
26. The run course is a two lap route of the Castle grounds. Trail running shoes are
recommended due to a mixture of paths, tracks and road. Exit from transition will be through a
marked “Run Out Gate” (adjacent to the Bike Out Gate) onto the run course around the Hever
Estate. The course will be marked by a combination of marshals and race signage (luminous
yellow), due to the evening race series happening that night other courses will also be marked out.
The IS tri race course will be marked in yellow and is two laps of the Anne of Cleaves running
route. The run routes can be found on the race website www.castletriathlonseries.co.uk. The run
route will branch North of the river Eden over a series of small wooden bridges before returning
towards transition for the start of lap 2 (see Enclosure 1).
Medical Advice
27. Competitors should inform the organiser of any known medical condition (such as diabetes,
asthma, allergy to penicillin, etc.) on the entry form or during registration. Details must be written
on the back of the number and a small red cross drawn on the front. Whether suffering from a
medical condition or not, if competitors feel unwell on race day - don't race.
28. Mobile First Aid facilities will be available at all points around the swim, bike and run course.
Route marshals will have 2-way radios and be able to call upon First Aid to attend a location
anywhere on the course at short notice. Additionally, there will be First Aid at the Finish and in the
Event Administration Area.
Competitor Conduct
29. Competitors are reminded that they will be seen as representing the Armed Forces
throughout the event. They are therefore asked to treat both members of the public, road users,
marshals, other competitors, event officials and venue staff with respect. Use of foul language or
aggression towards any other parties will not be tolerated and infringement will not only be dealt
with in accordance with BTF rules but administrative or disciplinary action may be taken. No
littering will be tolerated. All gel wrappers and bottles must be carried throughout the race or
disposed of at transition or at the aid stations.
Aid Stations
30. Water and PowerAid will be available at the 10km point of the cycle course in the lay-by at
Penshurst and also at the 2km point of the run just before the bridge onto Sixteen Acre Island.
Competitors are asked to throw their empties into the bins provided. Water will also be provided at
the finish.
Results
31. Chip timing will be used at the event provided by Stu Race Timings. Your timing device,
which will be given to you at Registration along with your swimming hat, must be attached to your
left ankle throughout for you to record a time and place at the event. The onus is on you to ensure
it is properly attached. The time mechanism is activated and de-activated by the gun at the start
and then running mats in transition and at the finish. This will enable us to record the split timings
for the different disciplines. On completion of the race your timing device will be removed from
your ankle. This must happen at the finish line.
32. A limited results service will be available from the Event Administration Area on race day. A
full results service will be available on the website www.castletriathlonseries.co.uk during the week
after the race.
Travel and accommodation
33. Travel. Situated 30 miles from London in West Kent, exit the M25 at junctions 5 or 6 and
follow the Brown tourist signs. Hever Castle is three miles South East of Edenbridge off the B2026
between Sevenoaks and East Grinstead in the village of Hever. The venue is also well signed
from the Hildenborough exit of the A21. For satellite navigation users, the post code for the venue
is TN8 7HG. A map can be found at Enclosure 2.
34. Accommodation. It is the responsibility of team managers to organise accommodation for
their own teams:
a.
Military accommodation. The nearest military establishment is Brompton Barracks,
Chatham, ME4 4UG. It should be noted that these barracks are over an hour’s drive from
the race venue.
b.
On-site camping. On site camping can be accommodated, but due to limitations of
services there will not be any electricity or running water within the allocated field. Personnel
wishing to camp should contact the race organising company with a camping request:
infro@castletraithlonseries.co.uk
35. Parking. Hever Castle traffic marshals will direct traffic to the parking area on the estate.
Please take extra care on the private road as there are a number of young families who live along
it as well as it being particularly busy throughout the day with runners, pedestrians and other
vehicles.
36. Competitors are encouraged to car share if practicable due to the restricted nature of the
parking area. There is a 10 minute walk from the Car Park to the Event Administration Area. The
Car Park will not be open until 0700 on the race morning. Please allow sufficient time for your
journey as there is no flexibility on start times due to police and Kent Highway restrictions.
Summary
37. Hever Castle will provide a memorable venue for the 2012 Inter Services Standard Distance
Triathlon Championships. We look forward to seeing as many representatives form all six services
and paratriathletes at the event. Please do not hesitate to contact the undersigned if you have any
questions.
