Common Description

Dedicated Internet Access is a business class service that guarantees you a reliable, direct

Internet connection 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. When Internet service providers talk about

"dedicated" connections, they mean high-speed, high-bandwidth connections that provide customers with full-time Internet access.

Because a dedicated connection is "always on," it's more reliable. In the case of SBC Pacific Bell

Internet Services, you can get services ranging from LAN ISDN for small businesses (128Kbps),

Frame Relay (56Kbps-1.5Mbps) for medium-sized businesses, and now DS3 (45Mbps) and OC-3

(155Mbps) for large-sized enterprises.

Reliability

To maximize throughput, we purposely overbuilt our network and partnered with two highly reliable Internet backbone providers to ensure full network redundancy. We track and trend all routers and backbone provider circuits via network management tools and add additional capacity to the network well before it's needed. Although this may not be the cheapest way for us to do business, it ensures you get what you've paid for by avoiding the latency issues inherent in overdriving a network.

Performance

Our network is comprised of multiple hubs connected by a redundant, high-speed DS3 (45 Mbps) backbone network. Each hub features industry-leading equipment from Cisco Systems and

Ascend and runs on either a FDDI LAN or a Fast Ethernet network.

Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM)

Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) helps networks process data with the most efficient method of data transmission to date -- cell relay, a fast-packet switching technology. Customarily, most networks are either circuit-oriented, for delivering delay-sensitive (isochronous) information like video or voice, or packet-oriented, for high-speed data transmission. Although circuit switching guarantees end-to-end delivery and response times, it can waste bandwidth. Packet switching, on the other hand, optimizes bandwidth use, but has variable packet delivery times. Packet switching is not well suited for isochronous traffic because the amount of delay between packets results in jittery transmissions.

ATM Technology

ATM combines the reliability of circuit switching with the efficiency of packet switching, giving you the best way to deliver all types of diverse traffic -- data, image, voice, and video. Through simplified packet-switching techniques, ATM segments packets into 53-byte cells containing a 48byte information field and a 5-byte header. The header identifies cells belonging to the same virtual channel and is used in appropriate routing. ATM speeds the cells of data over the public network, makes quick connections, and accurately re-assembles the transmission at its destination.

ATM is an attractive Internet access option because it provides cost-effective access for companies requiring higher speeds than DS1 leased lines (1.544 Mbps), but not needing the full

speed of DS3 leased lines (45 Mbps). Unlike DS3 lines, ATM has no distance-based pricing component. SBC Pacific Bell Internet offers ATM Internet access service in the following speeds:

1.5 Mbps - 15 Mbps

3 Mbps - 20 Mbps

5 Mbps - 30 Mbps

10 Mbps - 40 Mbps

Burstable DS1 and DS3

A burstable product is not very different from the dedicated version of the same product. Lets look at burstable DS1 (Sometimes referred to as T1. T1 is an older term that is more appropriate for a voice line than for data. We prefer DS1 since it shows that it is a digital, not analog, service.) A customer would order a regular DS1 connection to SBC Internet. We would then monitor that line, taking samples of the bandwidth usage every 15 minutes of the day. Day and night, 24 hours a day. At the end of the month all of the data points would be charted on a graph. Our software would calculate the point on the graph where 95% of all the traffic fell below and 5% of the traffic was higher. It is at this bandwidth figure that we would bill the customer for the month.

Each month we would repeat this process. The customers bill could go up or down depending on the usage that month. This product is really just like a dedicated DS1 or DS3 connection, but the billing is variable based on usage. This means that it is really just a billing option rather that a different product.

The are many reasons that a customer would choose a "burstable" product. If the customer has long periods of very low usage during a month with only short periods where the full 1.54Mbps or 45Mbps is needed, then it may be more cost effective for them to us this product. A school, for instance, that may have high usage once a week, but little or no usage at other times, with many school holidays or vacations may find it to their advantage to buy a burstable product.

Another scenario may be a customer who knows that they have a large need for bandwidth, but don't know exactly how much, could use the burstable product to determine needs. A third way a customer may require a burstable product is for a backup to their primary Internet provider. If a customer has a primary provider they may wish to use us a backup to that provider and pay a minimum amount each month for the luxury of having the connection available if they need it.

The burstable DS1 and DS3 products are very exciting.

The customers like the idea of "bandwidth on demand". We at SBC Internet are proud to offer this product in our continuing effort to create and bring to market products that are relevant to our customers and of the quality that customers expect from one of the foremost telecommunications providers in the country.

DS1

DS1 is a dedicated, private line service designed for point-to-point communications. This 1.544

Mbps digital service is well-suited for large organizations requiring high capacity Internet

connections. Depending upon your organization's location, you may also want to consider our

1.536 Mbps Frame Relay service, which, unlike DS1, does not include a mileage charge.

Burstable DS1

If you want private line service, but anticipate moderate Internet traffic with an occasional need for increased bandwidth, you may want to subscribe to our burstable DS1 Internet access service. burstable DS1 service gives you access to bandwith in the following increments:

0 - 128 Kbps

512 - 768 Kbps

128 - 256 Kbps

768 Kbps - 1.024 Mbps

256 - 384 Kbps

1.024 - 1.280 Mbps

384 - 512 Kbps

1.280 - 1.536 Mbps

As a burstable DS1 customer, you always have the full DS1 bandwidth available to you over an unshared, non-fractional 1.544 Mbps digital leased line. Monthly billing for burstable DS1 service is based on sustained usage levels during the month, as determined by daily traffic samples taken every five minutes. Your monthly charge is determined by the usage level under which

95% of the samples fall. For example, if 95% of the samples taken in a given month fall below

384 Kbps but are above 256 Kbps, your usage falls into the 256 - 384 Kbps burstable usage tier.

However, the full 1.536 Mbps bandwidth is available for you to use whenever you need it.

DS3 Products

DS3 is a dedicated, private line service designed for point-to-point communications. This 45 Mbps digital service transmits data over fiber optic cable. It is well suited for organizations requiring very high capacity Internet connections that surpass the capabilities of DS1.

Tiered DS3

If you don't need a full 45 Mbps of bandwidth but need more than 1.544 Mbps, try our Tiered

DS3 service. With Tiered DS3 you can begin service at a lower bandwidth tier and change tiers as necessary. Our Tiered DS3 service is available in tiers from 5 Mbps to 45 Mbps. Choose one of the following cost-effective options to meet your needs:

Frame Relay

For businesses with access requirements up to DS1, Frame Relay is one of the most costeffective ways to get dedicated access to the Internet today. Frame Relay is a digital service that handles "bursty", high-speed data traffic making it ideal for Internet access.

It is a fast packet data networking service that sends data over the public network through temporary or "virtual" connections. The connections are considered "virtual" because they are kept open only when data is transferred or downloaded. Although the line is always connected to the Internet, Frame Relay allocates bandwidth on an as-needed basis. By comparison, private leased lines are always "open" and sit unused between bursts of activity.
