Texas Library Association Annual Fall Meeting - District 10 San Antonio Public Library- San Antonio,TX Saturday, October 24, 2009 DL Grant brought the meeting to order at 12:15 AM. D.L. opened the meeting by thanking the San Antonio Public Library and Mr. Andrew Gordon and Mr. Salazar for allowing us to use the facility. D.L. Grant also thanked all the individual presenters: Jeanne Martinez (Palo Alto College), Diane Duesterhoeft (St. Mary’s Univ.) Cindy Batman (UNT), Frank Faulkner, Texana/Genealogy (SAPL), Vicki Ash, Children’s Librarian (SAPL), Benjamin Longoria & Elma Nieto-Rodriguez, (REFORMA-La Estrella de Tejas--members), and Javier Garza (teacher/author). D.L. thanked the officers of District 10 for their participation in the preparation of the day’s meeting. DL Grant recognized all the different types of librarians who were in attendance: academic, public, school, and special libraries. DL Grant described the John Powell Memorial Library Scholarship fund, encouraged all to spread the word about the D10 scholarship opportunity and thanked Stella Gonzalez for overseeing the distribution of the scholarships to the following individuals: Teresa Brader of UNT, Debra Lindenburg-Morrow of TWU, Christina Link of UNT, Karen West of UNT, Julie M. Ford of UNT, Polly Golden Burns of Sam Houston State, and Matthew Swartz of UNT. DL Grant announced that CPE credit is available for all sessions at today’s Fall Meeting. Participants needed to be sure and sign up in each session in order to receive credit. Minutes: Minutes from Annual Assembly were read and approved. Treasurer’s Report: Most current report available from TLA – thru 6/30/2009 - Balance of Includes money donated exclusively for use by Powell Scholarship Balance available for Fall Workshop expenses Checks written on account to date Leaving a current balance $2372.65 - $ 750.00 $1622.65 - $1304.27 $ 318.38 New Business: Elections- S. Martyn conducted the election of officers and asked for nominations from the floor. Marisa Sparks seconded the motion to accept the slate of officers as written. The results of the election were announced. Newly filled positions are as follows: Secretary: Arthalene Gordey, Treasurer: Dexter Katzman, and Chair-Elect: Janie Pickett Report from TLA Executive Board: Patrick Heath P. Heath explained that the executive board is made up of 10 people/officers who give guidance to TLA between sessions of council. He reported that Annual Conference was attended by 8000 people and that Annual Assembly is attended every summer by 350-500 people. The Disaster Relief Fund has issued their second calendar: Tattooed Ladies of TLA. The DRF is also raffling a painting Made in Mexico by Susan Roth and that tickets may be purchased online at the TLA web site. He noted that the Continuing Education Project, an initiative to publish a series of articles and webinars are described at the TLA website. The final fall sessions are set for the month of October. New topics will be covered in a winter series. Strategic plan called for intense continuing education which resulted in the articles and webinars. 100 people met from all over the state to discuss transforming local libraries. Recommendations were to reduce the number of standing committees. The task force will explore ways to make a template that will make making changes easier/faster. Another group will look at how districts should change. Heath asked all to fill out the questionnaire regarding how members feel about districts. TLA Legislative Committee – Antonio Martinez $17,000 was the total contribution last year. He is soliciting funds for this year. TLA San Antonio Local Arrangements Committee - Jeanne Martinez Stated that they need a volunteer to chair the Placement Center committee Bexar Library Association– Laurie Packard Membership is down and encourages all to join. Karen Balcomb Awards Chair announces several initiatives: educational scholarship for library school or continuing education trainees. BLA officers have information for grant and awards. Strong Libraries/Strong Scores- Diane Hopkins - asking for school librarians to nominate a principal or school administrator to come to Annual Conference to hear about how librarians effect school achievement, Thursday April 15th. Keith Curry Lance will discuss research projects such as the Colorado Report and Texas Report. James Bosco will discuss impact of Web 2.0 on school achievement. TALL Texans- S. Martyn talked about TALL Texans and encouraged. New Members Round Table and TALL Texans will sponsor pre-conference program: “Links to Leadership: New Members Growing Tall.” New Members Round Table- Reuben Kaller, Co-Chair New Members Round Table, announced the Outstanding New Librarian Award which NMRT awards every year and the TLA/NMRT/Quality Books, Inc. Professional Development Grant, an annual grant co-sponsored by Quality Books, Inc. Applications for both are available on the TLA web site.
