Global Health Student Association October 1, 2003 meeting Minutes 5:00 pm Introduction to “Hot Topic” Concept Fouzia Khan, president of GHSA, asked the attendees to write down global health topics that they would like to learn more about. Each month GHSA members will choose a “hot topic” to be discussed at the next meeting. The students were asked to play a game of bingo, which involved finding other people in the room with different specific characteristics. This allowed them to get acquainted with each other. The winner of the bingo game, Beatrix, choose the “hot topic”, antibody resistant diseases, for next months discussion. 5:15 pm Announcements: Globalization Speaker Series o Proposals for Speakers – Due October 3 by Noon o Alan Kraut will speak at the Main Library on October 2nd at 2:00pm. National Primary Care Week & COPH o “Perspective on Global Health” luncheon will be held on Friday, October 24th between 12 pm and 1pm. o Flu shot Day - November 7, 2003 (all day) The Public Health Student Association is having their annual flu shot giveaway. All interested students please contact Fouzia Khan at fkhan@hsc.usf.edu. 5:20 pm Student Field Experiences Speaker: Victoria Wise-Neely – Field Placement Coordinator o vwise@hsc.usf.edu o Victoria brought a list of websites that may contain information on international study and internships. If you would like to do a field experience abroad, start thinking about it now. The length of stay depends upon the type of field experience, the location and your advisor. Also, look for OPS, part-time or temporary, positions with agencies such as the Department of Health and the CDC. For more information contact Victoria. 5:30 pm Peace Corp Opportunities Speaker: Ginger Phillips – Assistant to the Dean o gphillip@hsc.usf.edu o Ginger talked about the new Peace Corp and MPH program. Students interested will have the opportunity to enroll in the Global Health Program rather than be spread out among the different departments. The curriculum includes: 15 - credit Core Classes 12 - credit Global Health classes 9 - credit Elective classes 3-6 credit Field Experience 3 - credit Special project Students interested in applying for the dual Peace Corp and MPH program must apply to the Peace Corp and the Global Health Program at the same time, indicating on the application that they have applied to the other program. If accepted to both, the Peace Corp will differ fieldwork until coursework is completed and the student is ready for field experience and special project. COPH will waive the 9-credit tuition for the field experience and the special project. Speaker: Christian Reed – Peace Corp Rep (COPH Student) o o Peacecorps@iac.usf.edu 813-974-4579 o Christian talked about the history of Peace Corp. The goals of the Peace Corp are 1) to learn the culture if another country, 2) share American culture and 3) share technology. It is a government-funded program that requires a commitment of 27 months (3 months training, 2 years of service). Volunteer must be U.S. citizens and have a bachelor’s degree.
