KINGSTON MAURWARD COLLEGE JOB DESCRIPTION Job Title: Welding Lecturer Post Reference No: AG49 Job Purpose: To oversee and support all aspects of a students’ learning experience and to ensure that this is co-ordinated in a coherent, meaningful manner for each individual student within their tutor group. To teach and assess Welding and Fabrication on a range of courses at Level 1 to Level 3. Reports to: Section Lead – Agriculture, Countryside and Food Grade/Salary: £20,151 per annum which is Point 4b on the Academic Staff Salary Scale. Market pay supplements for specialist qualifications and skills may be available. Hours: 37 per week with flexibility to meet business needs. Functional Links With: Other teaching and work based learning staff from the Academy of Agriculture, Countryside and Food; Safeguarding Team Vision: The College is looking for an enthusiastic and self-motivated welding and fabrication lecturer with the ability to deliver high quality, inspiring lectures and practical teaching sessions at Levels 1-3. Much of this teaching will take place in the College’s welding workshop. Teaching will cover a range of welding and fabrication units on mainly full- time Level 1 and 3 further education engineering courses. Good communication and practical welding skills are a must. A flexible and positive attitude is required alongside the ability to challenge and motivate students. Teaching qualifications and a relevant vocational qualification at least at Level 3, or above are required. The role promises a varied and interesting workload. The successful applicant will have plenty of vocational / practical experience as well as being able to demonstrate excellent administrative and organisational abilities. The role would suit someone who has worked in industry and is now seeking a new challenge. Main Tasks and Duties: Lecturer Prepare Schemes of work, lesson plans and assessment plans. Teach and complete summative and formative assessment at FE levels 1-3 to 14-16, 16-19 and Adults. Teach groups of students in both practical skills and classroom situations. To set and maintain high levels of best industry practice. Report to KMC staff and parents or carers of learners as necessary In addition to the above responsibilities the role would also involve working with the Section Lead and other lecturers to help: o Ensure that good housekeeping standards are set and met, machinery, tool and equipment stores are secure, well stocked and easily accessed by fellow staff. o Lead the adoption into the curriculum of new technologies and innovations in the industry. o Plan for the replacement and renewal of the welding and forge resources. This includes producing an annually reviewed five year replacement plan. o Liaise with and ensure that the specialist welding and forge resources meet the requirements of all Licensing Authorities and any other relevant organisations. o Help keep abreast of changes in legislation and codes of practice within the industry and discuss implementation of any necessary changes with the Section Lead. o Monitor resources and make recommendations for upgrades, replacements and future requirements. o Plan and facilitate programmes of part-time and additional courses. o Produce and review risk assessments for all activities. Implement, maintain and monitor health and safety issues and, where necessary, amend practices and procedures to ensure a safe environment for all users of the specialist welding and forge resources. o Conduct regular training sessions for welding and forge resource users, focusing on the health and safety procedures, risk assessments and standardisation of curriculum delivery. o Seek further opportunities to develop the commercial side of business and create productive partnership links. With assistance from the other cross college service areas (eg. Marketing, students admissions, MIS, etc), manage the recruitment process for your course. Agree, set, share and monitor course performance targets with line manager and course team. Undertake teaching hours as contracted. Plan and review course content in consultation with colleagues within the ethos of continuous improvement. Monitor the attendance, punctuality and academic progress for all aspects of students in your group providing them with access to any extra help they may require (eg. Learning support). Ensure access to careers education, guidance and progression opportunities through liaison with the careers service. Plan and provide access to a range of enrichment activities within the framework of available options. Operate in-line with College procedures, maintain contact with parents, guardians and employers, and report on progress where appropriate. Organise and conduct study tours as appropriate. Use the College student disciplinary procedures in liaison with your line manager. Prepare for and co-ordinate course internal verification and liaise with Section Lead and External Verifier to ensure the effective validation of programmes. Undertake any other duties that as reasonably assigned which are appropriate to the post and the work of the College. Person Specification: Educational Qualifications / Experience Essential Relevant welding/ fabrication/ engineering qualification at Level 3 minimum (e.g. NVQ Level 3 / Level 3 Work-based Diploma, National Desirable Vocational teaching and assessing experience in welding and fabrication Relevant qualifications at Level 4, Certificate or Diploma / Level 3 Extended Diploma. Experience and confidence in performing a range of welding and fabrication tasks. Teaching, assessment and verification qualifications and experience – or the willingness to work towards these qualifications. An appropriate first aid qualification – either First Aid at Work or ‘Appointed Person’ – or the willingness to work towards Knowledge Skills Personal Attributes Other requirements Extensive and in-depth knowledge of the welding and fabrication industry. The Contract of Employment will be based on the provisions of the Kingston Maurward Academic Staff Contract. The salary for this post will be in the range of £20,151 per annum, academic staff scale point 4b. Working Hours will be 37 per week during Monday to Friday with flexibility to meet business needs. The annual leave entitlement will be 35 working days to be taken during the period 1 September to 31 August plus agreed Statutory Bank Holidays and College closure days (pro rata for part time and fixed term appointments. The appointment is subject to the satisfactory completion of a 9-month Probationary Period with reviews after 2, 5 and 9 months. The notice period will be three months lecturing staff on either side. Membership of the Teachers Pension Scheme is available.
