Parker Ausley How does the material of a football affect its range. Procedure Plan – Scientific Method Based Projects Problem Statement: How does the material of a football affect its range? Hypothesis If I throw different types of footballs then which type will go farther? Variables Independent Variable: footballs Dependent Variable: range Control variables: football material, different settings of were I’m throwing, different tempeture outside, throwing method Location: Football field/backyard Materials: Three types of footballs Meter stick Video camera Safety Precautions: Adult supervison Detailed procedures: 1. go to a open field /football field or back yard and grab a meter stick and three different footballs 2. then throw one at a time and lets see which ones farther 3. then u will measure the distance from where your standing and were the ball first bounced 4. repeat 5. then get all the measures. 6. Finally graph all the measures and see which one was the farthest thrown Data Table: 1 Parker Ausley How does the material of a football affect its range. The football was originated from rugby and soccer mixed together in the 1800’s to the 1900’s was really made out of a pig bladder then they switched it to cowhide, which was known for making blisters in the hand and around the 1960’s they changed into a real leather as shown today. And the NFL and the NCAA said in the future that there will be changes in material than design and also the equipment . Reflection: This helps my project Im doing, how does the material effect a footballs range. And with these notes this will help my project about the history of a football and that I need to make sure that I get the right materials for the footballs Im using Parker Ausley 10/14/10 2 Parker Ausley How does the material of a football affect its range. Qu Summary: In football there are many rules you have to go by to help your team win, Such as no facemasks witch is known as grabbing the persons face mask. And then there are no fighting by any means! Football was also originated in England it is a form of rugby. Before there were fiberglass helmets there were leather helmets, which as you can tell has no protection. Reflection: I learned that football was originated in England and a form of rugby and that they used leather helmets that had no protection for their face and there head. I also learned about the rules of football about no fighting or that’s a fifteen-yard penalty and facemasks. In 1800’s to the 1850’s they were made of pigskin and very raggedy. The laces are made of nylon plastic and the center of the football is rubber. To make a football the leather is divided into fourths. It needs exactly 3-4 p.s.i to pump it up, and a football can weigh up to 14 to 15 ounces. Reflection: This is useful to my experiment because I will be testing how does the material affect the range of a football. I learned that footballs used to be made of pigskin in the 1800’s to the 1850’s and that they do throw farther with regular leather because of the ayrodynamics. 4 Parker Ausley How does the material of a football affect its range.
