NDHHS is the state agency that offers a variety of programs for all age groups
and needs. Student will work primarily in Developmental Disabilities (DD) or
Child Protective Services (CPS). Student working with DD will work with
individuals and families. They will chair meetings, do home visits, file, and
type narratives, put together files, help out around the office.
Student working with CPS may participate in individual planning, case
management of ongoing cases, home visits and investigation of reports, team
and community meetings. Due to regulation of the agency students are more
likely to observe for quite a long while before having responsibilities for client
contact. Student will be able to shadow other areas of interest.

DHHS is the state agency with the sanction to investigate child abuse. The student will
be involved in the investigation team, needs assessment and ongoing service provision.
Their role will likely be observation, due to legal restriction. Student may also
participate in casework which provides direct provision of service to parents, foster
parents and children. Student might observe and experience what services are available
in the Adult Protective Services area. Since DHHS is the central agency involved with
child abuse and neglect, this placement site gives experience in collaborative working
relationships with other systems such as school, medical, legal and other community,
local and state agencies This agency will require background checks.

programs. Student will be directly involved in working with a variety of

This agency provides hospice care to families and individuals we have been
diagnosed with a life limiting illness and have been given 6 months or less to
live. The philosophy of hospice care is to alleviate physical discomfort while
providing emotional, spiritual and bereavement support. Hospice is an
alternative choice of care giving when a physical cure is no longer possible.
The student will work in a variety of settings in providing the patient services.
These include in home, assisted living or nursing home. The student will
observe and then independently provide emotional support, assess
psychosocial status and needs of patient and families and participate with
interdisciplinary teams. Student will be dealing directly with death and dying.
This agency covers a lot of counties in the state and most of the time is spent
traveling to see patients.

The Central Nebraska Drug Court is a multi-phase, judicially supervised
program with comprehensive treatment services. Eligible offenders will be
non-violent, chemically dependent, and willing to enter the drug court
voluntarily. This court is post-adjudicatory and upon successful completion of
the Drug Court Program the defendant may withdraw his/her plea and no
sentencing / conviction will be imposed. Students will be involved in all
aspects of the services provided to the participants. Student will have an
opportunity to visit the many facilities in the state that provide services for
individuals with alcohol and drug problems. Student will participate in all of
the supervision activities (searches, UA testing, house & work visits,
documentation & filing). They will also participate in treatment groups such
as MRT. Student will tour many other agencies around Nebraska (prisons,
jails, treatment centers). Requires a lot of travel time with staff on the road. A
back ground in criminal justice is very helpful.

The Crisis Center is a non-profit Heartland United Way agency providing free
confidential services to victims and families who have experienced domestic
or sexual violence. Services provided include a crisis line, safe shelter,
protection orders, advocacy and information. The Crisis Center also provides
peer groups and education programs. Student will work in the programs
serving victims of domestic violence and sexual assault. Activities can
include participation in support groups, observation of court activities and
securing orders of protection, training on crisis telephone line, accompanying
medical and legal advocates, individual work with clients, and attendance at
agency staffing and participating in community education programs. Primary

Grand Island schools recently received a grant for Social Work services in
their school. Eight social workers are employed in the school system each
covering a different school area. The social worker work together with
student, parents, school personnel, community agencies and others to make
school a successful and relevant experience for students. They assist parents
and families in understanding and reducing factors which contribute to school
performance problems such as: absences/ financial concerns, behavior
difficulties, lack of positive peer relationships, legal involvement, health,
medical and nutritional concerns and parenting skills. They provide
supportive counseling on a short-term basis, and work with community
agencies to understand the needs of the students/families. Students will
observe and become active in providing services to children/families that have
been identified as needing help.

Nebraska Veterans’ Home serve veteran’s health needs and includes a variety
of medical, nursing and rehabilitative services. This agency serves both male
and female veterans exclusively. These services range from assisted living
care for members able to essentially care for themselves, to skilled nursing
care. The placement offers an opportunity for the student to observe and then
do social histories, assessment and interact directly with veterans. Student
will also participate in 1 to 1 supportive visits, care plan changes, chart
reviews, obtaining notary services, staff and interdisciplinary meetings and
testing/evaluating members. The student will assume his/her own cases during
the semester, meeting the needs of the members.

This agency mainly serves families and children who are having problems.
The agency provides nine different programs treating a variety of different
situations in the community: Foster Care, Hall County Staff Secure, Hall
County Emergency Shelter, Multisystem Therapy/Intensive Family
Preservation (MST), Children's Day Treatment, Youth on TRAC, Medical
Services, Outpatient/Dual Diagnosis, Family Support Services/ Community
Treatment Aid. Student would be involved in various programs in the agency
and will spend much of their time observing and experiencing what services
are offered for the different types of family problems encountered. Students

homeless families, women, and children helping meet their need for safe

transitional shelter which houses 56 beds and emergency shelter for 12

issues. This agency provides programs offering people ways to lead more
fulfilling lives. The area the students will most likely work in is Specialized
Children’s Services which provide a variety of service for children including
therapeutic foster care, supervised visits, tracker services, family support, and
24 hours in-home services. Student will observe staff initially and eventually
work independently with family-based services. This is an excellent
opportunity for the student to observe multi-systems in that the child welfare
worker must often interact with the school system, medical system, and legal
system and with other social service providers. This agency covers many
counties in the state so a lot of traveling is required with some long day hours.

This agency is a medical hospital that staffs social workers in the Case
Management Department. This agency provides a variety of medical social
work services in an acute care setting. The social workers work in many areas
of the hospital such as inpatient, pediatrics, maternity and cancer center. The
student will have opportunity to shadow a variety of areas and independently
to provide assessment, discharge planning and make community referrals.
Most of the student’s time will be in a hospital setting and people admitted to
the hospital are generally very ill and in crisis stage.

Rehabilitation and sub acute units are located in the general medical hospital.
Student will spend time on both of these units. The rehabilitation unit is a 10
bed unit primarily for people who need to have intensive rehabilitation
services before returning home to the community. Medical reasons for rehab
would be stroke, back injury, head injury and other causes. The sub acute is a
short term stay unit for individuals who need additional services due to stroke,
knee/hip surgery or pain medication management. Student will work in both
areas of the hospital being involved in admission, assessment, psychosocial
histories, community resource finding, insurance claims, discharge planning
and involvement in interdisciplinary team meetings. Patients on these units
are primarily older individuals.

RD helps license and monitor foster and adoptive homes for children in need
of placement. Student will be involved in interviewing families for home
studies, processing paperwork, conducting background checks, make
recommendations and setting appointments.
Area of CPS, insure that children are in a safe environment. They also give
families referral information. Students will observe intakes and assist with the
intake and ongoing workers.
Area of DD student will serve in the role of service coordinator. The student
will be responsible for seeing that individuals with disabilities are receiving
adequate services and funding through the state of Nebraska. They will go on
home visits, attend various interdisciplinary meetings and help implement
treatment plans and goals.
Due to regulation of the agency students are more likely to observe for quite a
long while before having responsibilities for client contact. This internship
will provide education on the services this important agency has to offer.
Almost all other agencies connect in some way with HHS services. This
agency will require background checks.

This agency provides housing assistance to seniors, person with disabilities,
families and single individuals. Student will work with the self-sufficiency
services program and provide referral and link resources for individuals in
need. These programs provide regularly planned and implemented support.
Student will work with a variety of individuals with various housing needs
that can be assessed and evaluated in the Kearney community. Student will be
involved in individual as well as group work.

classrooms. Other services include crisis intervention, consultation with

School social workers are part of the assessment team for at-risk and special
educations students and help students and families with transitions. School
social workers work collaboratively with a school’s principal, school guidance
counselor and teachers to best meet the needs of each student. Students will

Community Action is a large comprehensive agency which provides many
different programs to the community. Mid-Nebraska changes people's lives,
embodies the spirit of hope, improves communities, and makes America a
better place to live. The student will observe and work with a lot of the
programs the agency has to offer. As the student gains more experience, the
student will be able to work independently with clients in programs within the
agency. Students will work in the area of Head start, L.I.F.E. and C.A.R.E.
programs.
Head start offers centered based child care for 3-4 years old children. The
student will assist families with whatever they need, Student will help file
papers, teach in the classroom, present at family night, assists FSA and go on
home visits.
C.A.R.E. (child abuse resource & education) program student will give
presentations on bullying, stranger danger and appropriate touch; they will
assist with parenting classes and divorce education classes.
L.I.F.E. (life improvement for everyone) program provides encouraging lifecoaching support by focusing more on possibilities instead of problems.

of HIV and provides comprehensive services to all people affected by HIV
and AIDS. Student will gain a broad perspective of social services in a health

This would be a combined internship with two agencies that provide direct
adoption services as well as post adoption and guardianship services for
families. Both of these agencies are housed in the same office.
Right Turn organization provides direct work with individuals and families
for post adoption and guardianship families. The goal is to put into place a
plan by offering case management, respite care, mentoring, mental health
services and group services to support families in transition.
Nebraska Children’s Home works with clients experiencing and unplanned
pregnancy and also to married couples who want to add to their family
through adoption. The agency provides education and support to pregnant
clients and assists them in making a parenting plan or an adoption plan. They
also provide training and complete home studies for couples who want to
adopt.

This agency is a large regional agency with many programs but the intern will
work primarily in child welfare programs.
Student will work with the Professional Partner Program (PPP) primarily. The
philosophy of the Professional Partner Program (PPP) is strength based,
family-centered, and acknowledges families as equal partners. The program
promotes utilization of the least restrictive, least intrusive, developmentally
appropriate interventions in accordance with the strengths and needs of the
youth. Student will provide care coordination for children and adolescents
with serious emotional disorders and their families. This is an excellent
opportunity to observe multisystem that interface with the school system,

York General Health Care Services is committed to providing you with the
highest quality health care available. This agency provides a variety of
medical social work services in an acute and skilled care setting. Student will
observe and then independently provide discharge planning, Medicare letters,
pre-admission paperwork and ID screens for patient. Student will also
participate in interdisciplinary team and a variety of other meetings. Student
will work mostly with the elderly population but may work with a variety of
populations including pediatrics, geriatrics, cancer patients or general medical
illnesses. Due to the acute nature of the facility, hospitals deal with life and
death situations.

This agency provides several programs including residential treatment, day
treatment and learning center. Provides services to boy’s ages 8 to 21 dealing
with severe, emotional and behavioral disorders. Student will provide one-onone support to youth, implement treatment plans and goals, attend
interdisciplinary meetings and supervise group activities and teach life skills
class.

This agency provides hospice care to families and individuals we have been
diagnosed with a life limiting illness and have been given 6 months or less to
live. The philosophy of hospice care is to alleviate physical discomfort while
providing emotional, spiritual and bereavement support. Hospice is an
alternative choice of care giving when a physical cure is no longer possible.
The student will work in a variety of settings in providing the patient services.
These include in home, assisted living or nursing home. The student will
observe and then independently provide emotional support, assess
psychosocial status and needs of patient and families and participate with
interdisciplinary teams. Student will be dealing directly with death and dying.
This agency covers a lot of counties in the state and most of the time is spent
traveling to see patients.

A prison serving women for the state of Nebraska. Student will work closely
with staff assisting in supervising and coordinating inmate activities, writing
reports, develop and monitor treatment plans and goals, assist in crisis
interventions and make community referrals for discharge. A double major or
minor in Criminal Justice would be helpful.
