CPR For the Professional – 2005 AHA Standards Review Sheet Adult/Children – One rescuer Child: From Age 1 to the onset of puberty (12-14) Adult: Onset of puberty and older FOR ALL AGES, SWITCH “COMPRESSOR” EVERY 2 MINUTES Check Responsiveness (Tap & Shout). If unresponsive: o Open airway No C-Spine Trauma: Head Tilt/Chin Lift Suspected C-Spine Trauma: Jaw Thrust If jaw thrust does not work, carefully use Head Tilt/Chin Lift o Check breathing (Look/Listen/Feel for 5-10 seconds). If not breathing: Attempt 2 rescue breaths (1 second each; just enough to produce chest rise). Do breaths produce Chest rise? No: Reposition airway and attempt 2 rescue breaths. If unsuccessful, see “Choking/FBAO” section. Yes: Check Carotid Pulse (5-10 seconds) No pulse – or you are not sure: o 5 cycles of 30 compressions: 2 breaths (2 minutes) o After 2 minutes check pulse. If no pulse continue CPR 30:2 for 5 cycles. Check pulse every 2 minutes and continue CPR as needed. o Note: If patient is intubated, give breaths every 6-8 seconds – independent of compressions. If pulse returns: Check breathing If not breathing: Perform rescue breathing: o Adult: 10-12/minute (every 5-6 seconds) o Child: 12-20/minute (every 3-5 seconds) COMPRESSIONS “Hard, Fast, Full Recoil” Adult o At least 100/minute o Use 2 hands with heel of one hand between nipples o 1.5” – 2” depth Child: o 100/minute o Use 1 hand with heel of the hand between nipples o Other hand on the head to keep airway open (unless large) o ½ to 1/3 of depth of chest Two rescuers: Adult: 30:2; Children: 15:2 106757550 Page 1 of 4 CPR For the Professional – 2005 AHA Standards Review Sheet Adult/Child Choking (“FBAO”) Conscious o If able to speak or cough, encourage coughing. o Unable to speak or cough effectively: Heimlich maneuver (Abdominal Thrusts) until obstruction is relieved or they become unconscious (“Pop until they drop”). Unconscious a. Chest compressions – just like CPR i. One rescuer: 30:2 ii. Two rescuers: Adult: 30:2; Child: 15:2 b. Open airway; look in mouth i. If object seen, try to remove it. NO BLIND FINGER SWEEPS! ii. In any case: Attempt 2 rescue breaths iii. No chest rise? Reposition airway; attempt 2 rescue breaths c. Perform 2 minutes of CPR (if no pulse) or rescue breathing (if not breathing with a pulse) or choking “relief” before calling EMS. o Open airway No C-Spine Trauma: Gently lift head Suspected C-Spine Trauma: Jaw Thrust If jaw thrust does not work, carefully gently lift head o Check breathing (Look/Listen/Feel for 5-10 seconds). If not breathing: Attempt 2 rescue breaths (1 second each; just enough to produce chest rise). Do breaths produce Chest rise? No: Reposition airway and attempt 2 rescue breaths. Yes: Look for signs of circulation – such as: o Brachial pulse (check for 5-10 seconds) o Breathing o Coughing o Movement No pulse – or you are not sure OR IF Heart Rate < 60 with signs and symptoms of poor perfusion: o 5 cycles of 30 compressions: 2 breaths (2 minutes) o After 2 minutes check pulse. If no pulse continue CPR 30:2 for 5 cycles. Check pulse every 2 minuets and continue CPR as needed. o Note: If patient is intubated, give breaths every 6-8 seconds – independent of compressions.
