HEARTSAVER CPR AND FIRST AID The new Hearstaver course design offers the instructor to tailor the course to the student needs. The options for instruction include: First Aid First Aid, Adult CPR/AED First Aid, Adult CPR/AED, Child CPR/AED First Aid, Adult CPR/AED, Child CPR/AED, Infant CPR Adult CPR/AED Adult CPR/AED, Child CPR/AED Adult CPR/AED, Child CPR/AED, Infant CPR Adult CPR/AED, Infant CPR CPR In the Schools format may be taught with no instructor/student ratio requirements, however, if the student is getting certified in the course, they need to receive the testing on a one instructor:one student ratio. If the student chooses not to complete the course for a card, this means they will not be certified. They have 30 days from the end of the course to receive a card. Once they extend past this grace period, they must be issued a card. One option that is required is that the AED will be taught whenever teaching a CPR component. The student is required to have a copy of the appropriate Heartsaver student workbook for the course. To receive the course completion card, the student must participate, practice and successfully complete all lessons and skill proficiency testing as directed by the curriculum. All students must be issued an authentic American Heart Association Heartsaver course completion card upon successful completion of the course. Under no circumstances may an instructor issue letters, or certificates in lieu of the course completion card. You should only issue a course completion card based on the student’s ability to demonstrate skills with proficiency and consistent with AHA guidelines. Testing: Written testing: There are short written review questions in the first aid student provider manual. For those employers that require a formal test, there will be one made available though the training center. Skills Test Requirements Adult/child 1 Rescuer CPR Adult/child 1 Rescuer CPR and AED (optional module if taught) Infant 1- rescuer CPR (optional module if taught) When to Give Tests: Pause the video after each section of the course where a written test is done. Tell the student to open their manual and to answer all of the questions for that section. Review the correct answers and provide the students with the appropriate reference page for them to review those questions they may have missed. Do not delay the course by answering in detail the questions and answers, please wait until after the course or during a break time. The written tests are done at the end of these sections of the course: First Aid Basics Medical Emergencies Injury Emergencies Environmental Emergencies →There is a no “pass/fail” on the written tests. These questions are provided as a tool for the student to mark their progress in understanding the material. You will test students following student practice sessions as specified in the agenda. Use the CPR critical skills checklist to ensure that the student has demonstrated each step of the skill correctly and to record the student’s results. Test each one student at a time. If a student does not pass a skills test, work with that student during the remediation lesson at the end of the course and retest the student at that time. In every retesting case, test the student in the entire skill.
