CPR In the Schools format may be taught with no instructor/student ratio requirements,
however, if the student is getting certified in the course, they need to receive the testing
on a one instructor:one student ratio. If the student chooses not to complete the course for
a card, this means they will not be certified. They have 30 days from the end of the
course to receive a card. Once they extend past this grace period, they must be issued a
card.
One option that is required is that the AED will be taught whenever teaching a CPR
component.

The course completion cards for Heartsaver courses are related to the material that is
taught by the instructor. To receive the course completion card, the student must
participate, practice and successfully complete all lessons and skill proficiency testing as
directed by the curriculum.
All students must be issued an authentic American Heart Association Heartsaver course
completion card upon successful completion of the course. Under no circumstances may
an instructor issue letters, or certificates in lieu of the course completion card. You should
only issue a course completion card based on the student’s ability to demonstrate skills
with proficiency and consistent with AHA guidelines.
Testing:
Written testing: There are short written review questions in the first aid student
provider manual. For those employers that require a formal test, there will be one
made available though the training center.
Skills Test Requirements
Removing Gloves
Finding the Problem
Using an Epinephrine Pen
Stopping Bleeding and Bandaging
If CPR training is taught: CPR testing is necessary to ensure that the student has
a competent understanding of the material.
Skills Test Requirements
Adult/child 1 Rescuer CPR
Adult/child 1 Rescuer CPR and AED (optional module if taught)
Infant 1- rescuer CPR (optional module if taught)
When to Give Tests: Pause the video after each section of the course where a written test
is done. Tell the student to open their manual and to answer all of the questions for that
section. Review the correct answers and provide the students with the appropriate
reference page for them to review those questions they may have missed. Do not delay
the course by answering in detail the questions and answers, please wait until after the
course or during a break time. The written tests are done at the end of these sections of
the course:
 First Aid Basics
 Medical Emergencies
 Injury Emergencies
 Environmental Emergencies
→There is a no “pass/fail” on the written tests. These questions are provided as a
tool for the student to mark their progress in understanding the material.
You will test students following student practice sessions as specified in the agenda. Use
the CPR critical skills checklist to ensure that the student has demonstrated each step of
the skill correctly and to record the student’s results.
Test each one student at a time. If a student does not pass a skills test, work with that
student during the remediation lesson at the end of the course and retest the student at that
time. In every retesting case, test the student in the entire skill.
