Teacher NAME: Mrs. Helen Addie SCHOOL: Okkodo High School e-mail HAddie8381@gmail.com or helen.addie@gdoe.com I graduated from Wilberforce University, Wilberforce, Ohio, with a B.S. in Biology and a major, also, in Secondary Education. I graduated from Central State University, also in Wilberforce, Ohio, two years later with a B.S. in Chemistry. Graduate work brought me an Executive MBA (Masters in Business Administration) and an MMSE (Masters in Manufacturing Systems and Engineering), both from the University of St. Thomas, St. Paul, Minnesota. I am a Certified Lean Six Sigma Black Belt and a Master Black Belt, both from Villanova University, Villanova, Pennsylvania. I am designated a Highly Qualified Teacher (HQT). I am classified as a Teacher V. Classes taught include physics, physical science, biology, marine biology, geometry, applied math, pre-algebra, algebra and AP biology. I also have taught physics, manufacturing engineering, adult education mathematics and water analysis engineering classes at the community college level. My classroom is a STEM classroom. What does STEM stand for? STEM stands for SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING and MATH. Emphasis is put on discovery learning and using technology in the process. Some technologies routinely used are ActivBoard, Elmo, and computers. In process is the use of a flipped classroom where students have access to assignments and activities outside the class and where they can take charge of their learning. They will have the opportunity to read assignments prior to class and to formulate questions for discussion. Barriers to be addressed are student access to the internet and reaction to change. Students have become accustomed to being lectured to and being given exactly what they are to do i.e. being a passive learner. The flipped classroom requires them to be active learners.
