Course Description: Examination of film as a 20th and 21st century art form. Considers foreign and domestic
cinema with attention given to film in terms of archetype, myth, symbol, characterization, and plot. Open
repeatability.
Student Learning Objectives: Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to: (1) Examine film as a
20th 21st century art form; (2) Criticize foreign and domestic films; (3) Examine aesthetic categories of film;
(4) Define the literary development in modern times.

Textbook/Required Reading: No required reading. Suggested reading: The memoirs of the conquistador
Bernal Diaz del Castillo, available for download at Project Gutenberg (www.gutenberg.org). Broken spears:
the Aztec account of the conquest of Mexico, by Miguel Leon-Portilla. Notable Latin American Women:
Twenty-nine leaders, rebels, poets, battlers and spies, 1500-1900 by Jerome R. Adams , can be previewed on
www.books.google.com. Links to these and other resources are available at our class blog,
www.kmwfall2012.wordpress.com.
Recommended Supplies: Paper and writing supplies.
Evaluation: Class attendance, participation, Instructor/student evaluation of progress.
Class Cancellation Notification Policy: It is not possible to call every student if a class must be cancelled at the
last minute due to emergency. Confirmation of class meetings will be made every Monday AM on the
instructor’s voice mail greeting – (949)582-4900, x3155. To be sure there is no last minute cancellation, call
voice mail before class. It is highly recommended that students also organize a telephone tree. This way, your
instructor or the Emeritus Office can notify key contacts who can then call other class members directly.
Important note - If you have an email address, please do the following immediately:
Send a message to kwillner@saddleback.edu. Subject of the email should be FALL 2012 FILM AS
LIT STUDENT. I will then add your email address to any group message I send regarding our classes this
semester. Otherwise, any group messages will be sent to your student email address through Saddleback.
Returning students: If you have not received an email from me by the first day of class, you are not on
the blast list and must send me a message per above instructions!
Upon receipt of your email, I will send you a link to my blog, KMWfall2012.wordpess.com. This site will
have lots of interesting and fun information about this semester’s theme, and the content is accessible
without a password.
Each class session (excluding sessions 1 & 2 with enrollment activities):*
1:00 to +–1:15: Attendance, school announcements, introduction of film
+-1:15 to 3:45: Film and/or speaker’s presentation, instructor’s comments, student discussion
3:45: Class officially ends
*Will be a 15 minute break at closing credits of each film; schedule may vary at instructor’s discretion
(Note about the Tuesday classes 9-12noon at Laguna Woods Clubhouse 5 OR 2-5pm at Norman Murray
Center: the schedule of films will be about important women in North American history and culture)
