Stock Market Project – BBI 20
This project is designed to make you familiar with the Stock Market and experience its
daily fluctuations first hand.
You will be given $100 000 CAD which you will then use to buy 5 stocks. It is up to
you how many shares of each company you would like to buy.
For this project, you will use the website http://ca.finance.yahoo.com/investing.
This is the website that you will use to track your stocks daily. Attached is a sheet with
the step by step instructions for using this website.
Trading will begin on Tuesday, May 7th, and will continue until May 28th .
Your first task will be to choose 5 companies to invest in, and how many shares you are
going to purchase. You are required to hand this in to me (on the sheet provided) at the
end of class on Monday, May 6th. You should have your company (including the
LETTER SYMBOL), the stock exchange it is listed on, the amount of shares you are
buying (in Canadian Dollars) and the total $. If you wish to buy shares in another
currency, you must convert it to Canadian Dollars when reporting it to me. You can use
the website http://www.xe.com to convert currencies.

IF you decide to sell shares (due to a big gain or loss) from one of your companies and
invest in another, you will be able to do so! There are a few rules for this.
They are as follows:
1. You may sell your shares in a company, but YOU MUST SELL ALL OF THE
SHARES IN THE COMPANY YOU CHOOSE. You can only have your
money invested in 5 companies at any time.
2. If you do choose to do this, you may invest your money in another stock. This
works both ways:
a)
If you make money on the shares you sold, you can invest all of
that additional money in another stock. (You could also save the
money you made, and add it to your final TOTAL at the end of this
assignment!).
b)
If you lost money, you can invest the remainder of your money
into a company’s stocks.
c)
YOU CAN ONLY DO THIS ONE TIME! So choose wisely!!
You must tell me on the day that you sell your shares. Make sure you include the
price per share that you sold at, and the total $ amount!! I will record this
information on the ‘Your Shares/TOTAL’ .
