Some of those who were there share their impressions of this year’s Telstra National Championships. Ian Moir Maybe I’m getting old, but this one seemed to be the “busiest” national championship I can remember. Crawling out of bed before dawn on Friday morning, I headed out to Capalaba to link up with Mike and Debbie Keelan and Amanda Phillips to share a taxi to the airport for the 7:00am flight that would carry the first group of Queensland weightlifters to Melbourne. Touching down at about 9:30, we climbed aboard the mini bus we’d booked for the week end and with Barry Harden navigating, headed east into the wilds of suburban Melbourne. About an hour later we arrived at our digs, the Knox Quality Inn, dropping Debbie Keelan off at the competition venue along the way to attend to the weigh-in for the Disabled Powerlifting session that would open the championships that afternoon. Miles Wydall I was rather honoured to be picked as a State men’s coach at the 1999 National Championships and really enjoyed the event although it did not seem the same with Greg Hobl missing from the Team. On arriving on the Friday at the airport in Melbourne there was a marathon hour journey from the airport to the motel, which was made more bearable with the entertainment provided by Tim Oberg’s video camera antics and Ian Moir's spectacular emergency stops and aggressive U turns across 6 lanes of traffic. Ian Moir With little time to waste after checking in at the hotel, Barry Harden and I headed back up the road to the shopping centre, he to prepare to referee the first session of weightlifting and I to attend the technical meeting preceding the championships. I had planned to be out of the meeting and back on the road within the hour to pick up the bulk of the Qld team who were flying in on Friday afternoon, but I hadn’t counted on a couple of things, like some roadworks, and making a mercy dash to “rescue” Mike and Amanda who’d set out on foot from the hotel to the competition venue under the misapprehension that it was only a few kilometres away (Barry and I had a quiet chuckle as we watched the odometer click over the 8 km mark, measuring the distance to the venue on a later journey) and so I didn’t get back to the airport until after 2 o’clock. Then it was load the 12 seater to capacity, avoid running over Derryn Hinch and Jackie Weaver standing at the kerb (playing “spot the celebrity” helps pass the time at Melbourne airport) and hit the road again. Back at the hotel, I had enough time to change into my referee’s clobber and get back up to the venue for the weigh-in of the 56kg & 62kg men, the first session that I was to referee over the week end. And what a session that turned out to be, with Fred Buchanan and Cameron Andersen winning U20 medals for Queensland alongside Victoria’s Yurik Sarkisian setting new Commonwealth records in the 62kg class. Whew... and that was just the first day! Debbie Keelan Another National Championships. I showed great foresight in packing the imodium...I think…or did I jinx myself. Anyway I must get the trophy for the person who spent the most amount of time in the toilet. And sorry to Katrina Hawkins whom I deserted in warm-up after her snatches…when nature calls… Started on the lomotil then and something must have kicked in as I made it all the way through coaching the next group, somewhat successfully, without having to rush off. Anyway it was a super busy weekend, with very little spare time. Except for all that time I spent in the toilet. Definitely not what you would class as a holiday. 4 Page 5 QWA Journal Ian Moir I think most of us were glad that there were no Queenslanders in the first session on Saturday, the 69kg men’s division, so that we didn’t have to attend the 7:00am weigh-in. Leaving Alex Goodyear to shed a couple of kilos in the hotel sauna, we headed back to the venue at about 8:30 on Saturday morning with our other three 77kg men and assorted coaches and officials. John Nightingale then took the wheel and set off to the airport to collect the final Queensland team members to arrive. Miles Wydall The shopping centre venue was novel, and provided a view of lifting that was quite unique as you could look down from a balcony above the event and watch the lifts from a birds eye view. The best battle of the Competition for me was between Marcus Harden and Jason Power for the 77Kg U20 Bronze Medal. Marcus lead by 5Kg after the Snatches and pulled out a unbelievable final 115Kg Clean and Jerk to really put the pressure on Jason Power who needed a 120Kg on his last lift to take the medal off Marcus. Jason managed to grind his way out of the squat and then held on to a great Power Jerk that screwed him into the ground to win on bodyweight with a really amazing lift. As Jason's coach it was one of those moments that really puts a lump in your throat, although it was such a great battle it was a shame that anybody had to lose. Wes Cassidy made his first return to the Nationals since he was a junior and was a little disappointed with his 210Kg total as he had hoped to improve on his State Championships result, but felt he was a little bit platform rusty. He however had a new PB although it was not the kind he wanted as he missed the jerk for the first time ever in competition! Ian Moir I was the M.C. for the 77kg category and had a front row seat for the battle between our own two lifters, Jason Power and Marcus Harden, for the junior bronze medal, which Jason eventually won on bodyweight with a solid performance at his first major championship. Alex Goodyear’s recent illness had taken it’s toll on his preparation for this competition and although he won the battle to bring his bodyweight down, he was unable to meet the challenge thrown out by Victoria’s Chris Dove for the senior bronze medal. Alex finished fourth, a credible result all things considered. At the conclusion of the medal presentation for this group, I headed up to the weigh-in room to attend to my official duties for the 94kg class and so I missed Tim Oberg's performance in the 85kg category, but I'm sure that it's on video tape, like just about everything else Tim did on the week end. Debbie Keelan The womens team on the whole were on their best behaviour, except for one little “accident”. It was great to see so many personal best performances. And it was great to be there and see and feel the lifters' excitement about lifting at the Nationals. As Womens Coach for the Queensland team, I noticed yet again that I am a rarity, as all other States had male coaches. Ian Moir Out of the 12 sessions of the championships, I refereed three, was M.C for two and operated the timing clock once. It was the session during which I was timekeeper that I enjoyed the most because I was able to take advantage of being close to the platform, without having to concentrate on official duties as much as when refereeing or announcing. This meant that I was able to appreciate the contests of the 63kg and 69kg women, which featured four Queenslanders - Angela Bentley, Melissa Nightingale, Katrina Hawkins and Amanda Phillips. Angela, Melissa and Victoria’s Debbie Smith set to work to produce a hard fought battle in the 63’s. Angela managed to stay ahead of Melissa and hold first position until Debbie’s final clean & jerk was passed for the gold medal. In the 69’s, Amanda Phillips moved quickly into the driving seat, pressuring Simone Ingram of Victoria. Amanda emerged victorious even though her leg strength deserted her after the first clean & jerk. 5 Page 6 QWA Journal Miles Wydall The senior women’s competition was spoilt by a number of bombs in the top ranked females, and it was great to see Amanda Phillips win the best overall female title as Mike Keelan coached her to victory in the 69Kg Class. Debbie Keelan It was disappointing to see so many of our National Womens Squad bombing out…but good news for Amanda Phillips who took out best overall Senior and Junior female lifter awards. Anyone need to buy a new “Telstra” phone? I’m sure she has got one or two for sale by now. I guess the bombing out thing is a sign of the times with our best females getting even more competitive with just four places in the Olympic Games team in their sight. Miles Wydall The battle between two relative newcomers – Megan Warthold and Natasha Barker in the 58Kg class provided the best entertainment of the Womens Competition with Diana Loy overpowering Debbie Lewis in Clean and Jerk to take the Senior bronze medal in that class, and it was great to see Kristy Moore win the 75Kg class after last year's bomb out. Other notable performances were Melissa Nightingale's 82.5Kg Clean and Jerk in the 63Kgs. Justine Hartwig’s silver on bodyweight with a great Clean and Jerk in the 53Kg class and 14-year-old Desiree Gagliardi who seemed very composed on the platform in such a major event and managed 3 PB’s to win the U20 48Kg Class. It was also great to see Leonie Himiona handle the event with a great determined and focused attitude, and finally banish the platform jitters that have dogged her in the past. Ian Moir Peter Thomsen was our man in the 94’s. Nursing a hamstring injury sustained just a week earlier, Peter was under no illusions about his medal chances. None the less, he gave his all as usual, lending credence to the belief that Peter will always be out there on the platform when it counts. Sunday dawned grey and drizzling. When Victorian coach Martin Leach appeared at the first weigh-in and announced that the sun was up, I asked him, “how can you tell?”. After the three Queenslanders who were competing in the 105kg category ‘B’ group were weighed, Miles drove them back to the hotel for breakfast, leaving me and my fellow referees to complete the weigh-in and await the opening of the centre’s food court so that we could fortify ourselves with some McBreakfast. Miles Wydall Peter Foster at his first major competition lifted well, and really enjoyed just being there. Bryan Fisher lifted a U16 National record in the Clean and Jerk of 110Kg, although I think he was a little overawed by the event. Damon Kelly took U16 records in the Snatch Clean and Jerk and Total and increased his PB’s by 20Kg’s. He was very pleased with his Junior Silver medal and rather amazed and a little embarrassed to receive an Open Men's Silver Medal as well. Paul Wheeler put in the best Queensland male lifters' performance to increase his best total to 275Kg. Ian Moir Although not everything went strictly according to plan (when does it ever?) all in all this was another successful National Championships for the Queensland crew. Something which may have taken more than few people by surprise this year was the resurgence of the NSW senior women's team, whose victory broke Queensland's three-year hold on the championship shield. Winning back that shield will be just one of the 6 Page 7 QWA Journal challenges that Queensland's weightlifters will rise to next year when the National Championships come to our home state in August 2000. Sunshine Coast Weightlifting Club By Barry Harden The Sunshine Coast Weightlifting Club has been around for about 30 years, originally formed by Bob Henderson when he moved to the Coast. I have been a member of this club for the past 25 years. During the time I have been a member I have seen the Sunshine Coast Weightlifting Club go through many highs and lows. Over the years the club has hosted State and National Championships, been housed in some of the best venues and some of the worst. Our membership has varied, from at times as high as thirty to as low as five. Through all this the Sunshine Coast Weightlifting Club has had its share of successes with State and National Champions being produced. In recent years I wandered if we should have changed our name to the Wanders Weightlifting Club with no real place to call home. We believe that finally this all about the change. Hopefully by the time you read this, the Sunshine Coast Weightlifting Club will be housed in it’s new home at the University of the Sunshine Coast. The Sunshine Coast Weightlifting Club was incorporated September last year and has a membership of twelve most of which are active members. But, unlike the years gone by we do not have any school age members. I think this will change with the close proximity of several schools to the University. Our club is looking forward to bigger and better things in the next century. We have a good cross section of young and older lifters and a good example of female competitors as well. Hopefully, we can set the right example for people wishing to try our sport. As soon as Sunshine Coast Weightlifting Club is established in our new premises we will invite you all up for some country hospitality. Stay tuned now you hear. Travels and Travails of a Weightlifter By Mal Irwin I have had a busy year, forcing me to miss all competitions in which I may have made a mark. I have been pleased to read in the last few days of the progress made by Master’s lifters in Toowoomba. Good work, Bob Henderson, you must have gotten a few workouts together at last! Allow me to bore you with my travelogue. My job has taken me to Ravenshoe on the Atherton Tableland. It bills itself as the highest town in Queensland, and it reached by a constant climb from Atherton (itself reached by a considerable rise from the Cairns coastal plain). A traverse across verdant razor-back ridges set on rich red volcanic soil, moist with constantly flowing clean streams, makes Toowoomba country look poor. 15 Page 16 QWA Journal Our work at Ravenshoe involved seismic profiling along three damsites, which are by nature hilly. The equipment is heavy, although much reduced in weight from previous years. The historic Millstream Express runs through one site. A 1925 steam engines hauls three wagons fourteen kilometres to a turning wye, where afternoon tea is had while the engine decouples and turns. The power of the tourist industry is richly evident here. Even in, or possibly because it is, mid-winter, there were dozens of interstate and international tourists paying fares on the three days the Millstream runs. After ten days there, we moved west to Georgetown, which is a dry desolate dusty place. It is three hundred kilometres from the Gulf of Carpentaria, and papers only come once a week. The Internet is available at the Etheridge shire council office however, so the QWA web-site would be there! Five days of bush-bashing that could feature in a Malcolm Douglas episode followed. At one stage, a twokilometre return walk across the rocky Gilbert River carrying all our equipment was in prospect. However the landowner brought out his 250XL Honda, and blasted around his desolate back-block to literally handblaze a trail through the river. After being caught in the sand briefly, we made it through the first time, while another vehicle with winch stayed handy. I was more nervous on the repeat trip the next day, with no-one else around, and a good four-hour walk from the homestead. Then the highlight of the trip! Bypassing the tourist trap of Forsayth, the terminus of the Savannahlander route, the strange time-warp experienced in Einasleigh was encountered. My travelling companion remarked that places like this only existed in movies. Not so! The gold-miners and the cowboys were real, the big news was the petition to the Council to fences the town. This is meant to keep out the feral pigs and cattle. The pub shakes when the kelpie runs around upstairs, and the stairs were built for the verticallycompromised. On top of that, we hit town twenty-four hours after the Endeavour Foundation rally had hit town (Byron Bay to Redcliffe in six days, no highways allowed). Nobody in Einasleigh had gone to bed or bathed in that time. After that, the spartan but clean barracks at the Lynd Junction the next night were luxurious. There had been a breakdown in planning, so we were obliged to wait another two days to proceed. So a fivehour drive to Cairns ensued, with a desperate scramble to find accommodation on the evening of the Show Holiday. The fishing fleet had also stood down due to gale-force winds. Settling down at nine-thirty pm in a promising water-hole, I did some Yellow Pages research to locate Jim Barnes’s “Future Fitness” gym. He has a bar of sorts; with some CRC, it functioned well enough to achieve 105kg X 3 for power cleans. Ancillary exercises followed. Jim is a long-time enthusiast of the Iron Game. The next day we returned to Mt Garnet to complete the job. After ALL the equipment broke down, it was time to pack up the explosives and board the jet. Tonight, six nights after my initial restart in Cairns, I went downstairs to power-snatch 82.5X3, absolutely my best since starting Master’s lifting. I am now pondering what this means. After nearly four weeks with only one general training session, one of my training exercises is at a long-time high, almost up to what I did in my Thirties. Should I be training by carrying heavy equipment uphill and down dale, or was my ploy of plyometric jumping and lifting the satellite phone (25 kgs) as a deadweight actually helpful? It would prove the old maxim that the intensity of the contraction is as important as the weight being lifted. By rights, with the long hours, only one whole day off work, alcohol imbiblication, late nights, up to five hundred kays per day, I should be way behind. Master’s training is still a mystery. Or IS it the ginseng and pollen pills? 16 Page 17 QWA Journal 17 Page 18 QWA Journal 1999 World Junior Championships Savannah, USA 3-8 July 1999 Men's 56kg Class Luo Zongnan Wu Meijin Armen Ghazaryan Gulbey Akti Masaharu Yamada Cristian Sanchez Abdalla Hassan Yuichi Suehiro Alejandro Romo Born 1979 1980 1982 1980 1980 1983 1979 1979 1979 Nation CHN CHN ARM TUR JPN ECU EGY JPN MEX Body Wt. 55.82 53.44 55.80 55.74 55.56 55.58 55.24 55.32 53.86 Snatch 120.0 117.5 117.5 107.5 97.5 105.0 102.5 107.5 90.0 Jerk 150.0 145.0 140.0 132.5 137.5 125.0 125.0 120.0 120.0 Total 270.0 262.5 257.5 240.0 235.0 230.0 227.5 227.5 210.0 Men's 62kg Class Shi Zhiyong Lee Bae-Young Yeon Je-Do Stanel Stoica Reyhan Arabacioglu Ioannis Cholidis Jose Utria U. Amanda has also been selected to lift at the World Senior Weightlifting Championships in Athens in November. Congratulations to our record-breaking females from the Nationals; Melissa Nightingale set new National Under 20 records, and Deborah Lovely set new National Under 16 records (at her second weightlifting competition). Justine Hartwig set new Queensland records on the day. Way to go girls!! Congratulations to all those who posted personal bests: Deborah Lovely, Desiree Gagliardi, Justine Hartwig, Leonie Himiona (and she scored a photo in the Sun Herald), and Melissa Nightingale. Congratulations also to all those who put in solid reliable performances on the day - just what the coaches like!! Queensland came out second in team points in both the Under 20’s and Open – a sign of the times that weightlifting for women is becoming much more competitive. But that’s a good thing, if we want to get up there in the world rankings. Amanda Phillips and Melissa Nightingale are off to the Annual Coca-Cola Junior Sports Award function in September. Two weightlifters making it. Imagine the good this does for out public profile! Debra Keelan has been selected to upgrade her International Paralympic Powerlifting Referee status to Category 1 at the European Championships to be held in Budapest, Hungary in November. The Sydney Organising Committee for the Paralympics has made this opportunity available. Exciting stuff!!! Melissa Nightingale will be participating in the Landcare special Olympic promotion here in Queensland. Amanda Phillips was invited…..maybe gardening just isn’t her thing. Remember everyone about the Green and Gold Olympic sock promotion on the 15th September. Please get behind this project, and get out there and buy your socks!! The Annual Womensport Queensland Awards function must be just around the corner. So girls start saving your pennies. Welcome to all the new female lifters from the Windaroo Valley club. Excellent stuff. Best wishes to Jo Garner as she heads off to compete at the Australian Masters Games in Adelaide. 22 Page 23 QWA Journal A Wise Man Has Said Six Bright colours, different weights; Black, white, green, yellow, blue and red. “You’ve seen them before” a wise man has said. The weights are the same. So nothing is different, only in your head. Four by four, is the platform, as solid as the performance you’re about to do. “Something you’ve done before” a wise man has said. The weights are the same, the platform is the same. So nothing is different, only in your head. A cold steel bar is waiting for you, you’re all chalked up and they’re cheering for you. “You’ve been here before” a wise man has said. The weights are the same, the platform is the same, the bar is the same. So nothing is different, only in your head. The bar is set, The clock ticks down, you could hear a pin drop. You’re on the platform as the buzzer sounds. “30 seconds just as before” a wise man has said. Nothing is different, just don’t lose your head! You panic briefly, then gather your focus and try again. A solid performance, the down signal and three white lights. “The weights, the platform and the bar are the same as before” a wise man has said. You now see that nothing is different, only in your head. By Melissa Bethune Lifting By The Numbers By Ian Moir For many years weightlifters all over the world have used the Sinclair formula to compare the performances of athletes with different bodyweights. In recent times the QWA has developed a number of other ways to compliment the standard measure of performance in our sport, i.e. the actual total of the lifters' best snatch and best clean & jerk. Because many of the QWA's competitions are conducted in 7 -10 bodyweight classes and two or more age groups, some events provide very little direct competition for the athletes involved. To encourage the competitive spirit among lifters, the QWA has employed a range of competition formats that measure athletes' performances against their own Personal Bests and also against the performances of the best lifters in the world. Here is a brief explanation of how the various scoring systems work: 23 Page 24 QWA Journal Sinclair Bodyweight Correction Formula (Internationally accepted) Developed by Dr Roy Sinclair, this mathematical formula is used to "weight" the competition totals achieved by lifters of varying sizes. The "Sinclair Table" consists of columns of bodyweights, each with a corresponding coefficient. These coefficients are the product of a very involved mathematical process and are used to indicate a point score by multiplying lifters' totals by the coefficient that corresponds to their bodyweight. Put simply, the lighter the lifter - the larger the coefficient. Most "Best Lifter" awards are determined by using this formula. The Sinclair coefficients are derived from the performances of the world's best lifters across all bodyweight categories and are updated every Olympiad (4 years). Malone-Meltzer Age Correction Formula (Internationally accepted) Used in Masters competitions in conjunction with the Sinclair formula, the Malone-Meltzer formula provides a means of comparing the performances of Masters lifters, taking into account the effects of aging on physical performance. The Malone-Meltzer tables provide coefficients that correspond to each year of age over 30. Once again put simply, the older the lifter - the larger the coefficient. Forbes Improvement Formula (Used by QWA) This home-grown formula was suggested by Toowoomba's Keith Forbes and is used in conjunction with the Sinclair formula. The Forbes formula measures the improvement in a lifter's Sinclair performance over any given period while taking into account the differences between the amount of improvement that can be gained by athletes of varying levels of experience (novices improve faster and in greater leaps than advanced lifters do). Applied in a competition, the Forbes formula uses the lifter's best Sinclair score to date as a starting point. This score is then subtracted from the Sinclair score achieved by the lifter in that competition to give their Sinclair Improvement. The Sinclair Improvement figure is then multiplied by the Sinclair score achieved on the day to give the Forbes score. It is this multiplication of the Sinclair score by the Sinclair improvement figure that brings the novice's potential for larger Sinclair improvements into perspective. Example 1: Previous best Sinclair score = 300. Sinclair score achieved in competition = 305. Sinclair improvement 305 - 300 = 5. Forbes score 305 x 5 = 1525. Example 2: Previous best score = 200. Sinclair score achieved in competition = 207. Sinclair improvement 207 - 200 = 7. Forbes score 207 x 7 = 1449. In the event that a lifter does not improve on their previous best Sinclair score, their Sinclair score on the day is multiplied by 1. This formula is used to determine the "William Faulkner Performance Awards", named after the QWA Vice-President, which is presented at State Championships, and will be used in conjunction with the Malone-Meltzer formula for next year's QWA Masters League. QWA League & Queensland 2000 (Used by QWA) Both of these competitions employ three measures of performance: percentage of World Record, comparison to individual Personal Bests, and reward for consistency. The basic score for each competitor is their total expressed as a percentage of the world record in their particular bodyweight category. For example, a male lifter in the 77kg category who achieves a total of 250kg receives 67.114 points (250kg is 67.114% of the world record total 372.5kg). Lifters can add bonus points to this score by equalling or exceeding their Personal Bests in snatch, clean & jerk and total and also succeeding with all six attempts. They can also attract negative points if they fail to achieve close to their best results. This scoring system was first used in the 1996 Queensland 1000 and has proved successful in producing entertaining battles between lifters in competition. Using different measures of performance adds a new dimension to weightlifting competitions and helps us to present our sport in a variety of ways by taking full advantage of the technology that's available to all of us in the computer age. 24 Page 25 QWA Journal Countdown to the Sydney 2000 Olympics By Ian Moir By the time this article is published, the Sydney 2000 Olympics will be less than a year away, and the spectacular success that Queensland's Olympic Taskforce 2000 has had in attracting international teams and associations to our state for pre-Olympic training means that many of us will have the opportunity to get a feeling for the world's greatest sporting event long before the opening ceremony at Homebush Bay next year. The first of over 250 British Olympic Association (BOA) personnel have begun to arrive for training camps situated on the Gold Coast and in Brisbane as a test of facilities and operations ahead of the 650 strong BOA contingent that will decend upon South East Queensland next August before heading to the Games. The person responsible for laying the groundwork for these training camps and bringing it all together is the Managing Director of mja Matchpoint, Mick Aitken. I first met Mick in 1997, that's how long ago the BOA decided on Queensland as their base for pre-Olympic training. And now they're here. Our own Mike Keelan has spent countless hours assisting Mick and others to ensure that things run smoothly, and a number of QWA members have already volunteered to assist the BOA as Camp Ambassadors, based at the Brisbane camp centre - the Carindale Hotel. The BOA weightlifters will train twice a day at Chandler when they arrive at the end of month and seven British Paralympic Powerlifters competed at Chandler in the Queensland Powerlifting Open, organised by the Sporting Wheelies & Disabled Sport Association with assistance from the Cougars Weightlifting Club and the QWA. All those years ago when Juan Antonio Samaranch announced Sydney as the site for the 2000 Olympic Games, someone remarked that those Games would be upon us before we knew it. Well, the recent activity around here is certainly testament to that. The 1999 Queensland 2000 The Queensland 2000 is a unique event that brings Queensland’s top senior weightlifters and up-and-coming juniors together in a fast-paced and highly entertaining competition. The Queensland 2000 consists of three categories - Male, Female, and Junior (mixed). The five competitors in each group do battle for cash prizes and a place in the sudden-death round where the winners of each group go head-to-head in the ultimate test of power, endurance and determination. The format of the Queensland 2000 challenges each athlete to push themselves beyond their perceived limits, producing an atmosphere within the intimate setting of the weightlifting arena that draws the audience into an emotional bond with the athletes, willing them to succeed with every attempt. The Queensland 2000 Weightlifting Tournament Cougars Weightlifting Club Sleeman Centre, Chandler Brisbane Saturday 6 November 1999 An experience not to be missed. 25 Page 26 QWA Journal Olympic Art and Sport Contest The IOC is running an Olympic Art and Sport Contest.
