BIO 1: LAB MIDTERM STUDY GUIDE
The lab midterm is worth 25 points. The following is the information that you should know for the
midterm:
LAB 1:
1. Steps of the scientific method.
2. What a hypothesis is.
LAB 2:
1. What you did to the food items in order to determine the energy content (just how you conducted the
experiment, not the calculations.)
2. What food item contained the highest amount of energy and why.
3. What an enzyme is, why they are important, and how they can be denatured.
LAB 3:
1. Differences between animal cells and plant cells.
2. Recognize a plant and an animal cell and the main structures in each.
3. Functions of the main structures in plant and animal cells.
4. Metric system conversions (you will have the metric table to use on the midterm).
LAB 4:
1. How temperature and the size of molecules affects diffusion.
2. What happens to cells when they are placed in a hypertonic, isotonic, and hypotonic solution.
3. Why the 90% sugar osmometer gained water at a faster rate than the 50% sugar osmometer.
LAB 5:
1. The main function of cellular respiration.
2. The inputs and outputs of cellular respiration (i.e. the chemical equation of cellular respiration).
3. How ectothermic and endothermic animals are affected by environmental temperature changes.
4. Advantages and disadvantages of being ectothermic and endothermic.
LAB 6:
1. The main function of photosynthesis.
2. The inputs and outputs of photosynthesis (i.e. the chemical equation of photosynthesis).
3. The main substance that is found in roots and seeds.
4. Recognize stomata and their function.
5. The colors of light that are absorbed and reflected by plants.
LAB 7:
1. Be able to key out and identify common plants of Mt. SAC (you will be able to use lab manual pp.
114-119 on the midterm, so do not forget to bring your lab manual to the midterm).
2. What biodiversity is.
