Evaluate technology trends and contemporary management strategies for information system departments and personnel. Study the design issues in order to analyze various types of information system applications common in health care organizations and integrated health systems. Analyze reports of health information systems and electronic health records in health care delivery and management. Students should be able to develop a strategic plan, write a request for proposals, and evaluate proposals to select vendor. Manage the challenge of implementation and support to systems after ‘go-live’ Analyze the legal and ethical issues related to use of health information technology in healthcare management and clinical practice. Distinguish between privacy, confidentiality, and security with reference to PHI (Personal Health Identifiers). Define the challenges in managing security of PHI in health information systems. This is expected to be a research paper, not advocacy piece, which means it is supposed to present arguments on both sides of an issue and fully cite any outside opinions. Since to complete this paper additional research will be needed (outside of class readings) please familiarize yourself with GMU library holdings and resources. No support will be offered on searching library databases or the Internet for resources since this is part of the assignment. The paper should be between 5 and 10 pages, double-spaced, Times New Roman 12; any major citation style is accepted. Midterm and Final Exams Exams will include short questions and multiple choice questions based on class readings and presentations. The midterm will cover the material in the first half of the course, while the final will have content from the entire course. Return on Investment Project 5 You will receive a scenario and expected to make (basic) calculations and assess the ROI of EHR implementation in a mid-size hospital. The result will be presented as a narrated PowerPoint presentation from the analyst (student) to the hospital CEO (instructor). Please make sure you have access to PowerPoint and know how to use it before the assignment since no software support will be provided as part of the course. Class Participation Students are expected to attend class and participate in class discussion either in class or electronically on Blackboard. Only meaningful questions and discussions that refer to course content are considered class participation (i.e., questions about when an assignment is due do not count as class participation).
