The event is organised by GAI – Association for the Circuit of Young Italian Artists – and CIDAC – Association of Cities of Art and Culture – in collaboration with DARC – General Direction for Contemporary Architecture and Art, part of the Ministry for Cultural Heritage and Activities. The objective of the event is to promote young artists and their best expressions of creativity, through contact with their “colleagues” of the past, and to increase the value of Italy’s historic and artistic heritage. This year the formula for Gemine Muse has been renovated. The complex and delicate relationship between the younger generations of creators and the historic-artistic heritage opens a new and original season of research which is, in this first phase, limited to Italian cities. Gemine Muse 2007 proposes a series of theme-based, contemporary itineraries tracing pathways between history and art, organised by the protagonists themselves. From north to south, Gemine Muse will represent a variegated “playbill” in which exhibits of contemporary works, inspired by the masterpieces of the past, are flanked by initiatives that range from visual arts to music, from design to theatre, from writing to performance. For about three months, a series of events will animate 24 Italian cities, involving in all about 140 artists and 42 curators. The 2007 edition will also feature a new essay by Maurizio Maggiani: “Growing up I learned to recognise the refined gesture and its beauty wherever there was a trace of the art of work ... because I saw and learned that that gesture is the only way to save my life from the indecency of destitution, I tend to believe that if anything can save this country from its poverty, from the degradation of its submission, this will be brought about by men of refined decency and dignity, who will be recognised for this, and called on as constructors of useful beauty”. This is testimony to the function of art and beauty – to make our cities better, to render the present more liveable, to design our future – functions in which Gemine Muse intends to collaborate. Indeed, the event also has the objective of creating opportunities for exchange between young talents in the cities that participate, knowing that their creativity and their life styles represent a treasure for the country in terms of innovation; and that our cities, rich deposits of history, tradition and art, offer a unique context for experimentation. Pag 2 Because of this, Gemine Muse is not only a showcase for the presentation of new works and artistic performances, but offers dual possibility for contrast and comparison as well: on the one hand the artists create their works inspired by museum masterpieces and themes related to the individual cities; on the other, there is the chance for them to exchange experiences with creators from other cities. Gemine Muse is the evolution of an idea born in 2001 in the city of Padua by Virginia Baradel and Giuliano Pisani. In the course of its first four editions (2002-2005), it showed a constant increase with respect to the number of cities, museums, critics, artists and visitors who participated. Indeed, its particular formula has permitted many people all over Europe to experience a new highquality museums and art, and to discover emerging artists who are not yet inserted within the main circuits of the art world. In order to visualise as a whole the works of the artists, the themes, the curatorial choices, the spaces and to discover unbeaten paths that increase the appreciation of Italy’s historic and cultural heritage, there are: a “map”, a dual language catalogue (Italian and English), and a dedicated section on the website http://www.giovaniartitisti.it (available from 21 April). Gemine Muse 2007 is sponsored by SEAT Pagine Gialle and by UniCredit Private Banking, both of which are Main Sponsors, by Electa Mondadori, which has realised the “map”, and by Centostazioni, which has provided support for publicity.
