Annex: Gazetteer
In order to produce a list of e-universities it is important that there be a clear definition of the term e-university. For the purposes of this compendium in general (see in
particular chapter 1) and the Gazetteer in particular we define these institutions as:
Accredited university-level institutions delivering degree-awarding courses, with a
substantial percentage delivered at a distance, with a substantial percentage of these
using e-learning. If there is a face-to-face university at the core, we expect the courses
delivered at a distance to come from a separately named part of the university, and to
be referenced from a high level of the university Web site by such phrases as “Virtual
Campus”, “Online Service” or some such.
The list is given below.* It is by no means complete for the USA, although we have
included the main institutions referenced by UK lists and/or talked about as role models by UK experts. However, there are many more consortia-based organisations; in
particular many that are state-based – a useful list is maintained at the Instructional
Technology Council Web site http://144.162.197.250/NationalAlliancelist.htm.

Learning Platforms
The following list of systems (Virtual Learning Environments, Learning Management
Systems, Learning Platforms, etc) is based on two vendor lists in chapters 16 plus the
list of LMS vendors that appeared in the original version of chapter 18, updated in the
light of more recent information. For details of where the systems are used in elearning see chapter 16.
The list does not include details of any systems or vendors active since 2000. For details of systems released since then see http://www.edutools.info/.
A rough and ready classification of vendors has been used:

CMC = Computer Mediated Communications (asynchronous text conferencing, e-mail, bulletin board) as the core.

MLE = Managed Learning Environment as the core.

AUT = Authoring as the core.

FSV = Full Service Vendor.

RTV = Real Time Video (streaming or video-conferencing) as the core.

ASS = Assessment as the core.
