Key to Assessment Criteria
The assessment criteria are intended as indicators only, they are not added up to make your final
mark but are interrelated (e.g. clear communication is an important part of demonstrating your
understanding).
Content:
Your blog entries should demonstrate your engagement with the study tour at FIVE key moments
before/during and immediately after our visit to Sheffield (you will be penalised for not making
regular contributions in this way). You are required to make a minimum FIVE contributions
(equivalent 2000 words) – see assessment information on LMS – THREE of which should be
written contributions (you can include photographs and videos to make up the remaining
contributions). If you prefer, you can make more regular, shorter entries – there is no limit on the
entries you can make.
Evidence of Active Participation and Engagement:
The blog must demonstrate your active engagement and participation in the study tour through
referring to the activities you have taken part in (this might include photographs of activities),
reflecting on your expectations, discussing how your expectations have been
met/challenged/exceeded, and reflecting on how your thinking has developed during the tour.
Conceptual/ Thematic Understanding:
Blog entries should engage with and demonstrate an understanding of some of the central
concepts/ themes of the subject (for example: industrialisation, urbanisation, urban planning, class,
deindustrialisation).
Creativity:
You will be rewarded for evidence of creative engagement with the study tour e.g. you might
upload some images/ video that captures a particular moment in a creative way. You may write
about an incident in a creative way, or capture something which others have not noticed.
Quality of individual reflection:
Your blog entries should demonstrate that you are reflecting on your expectations and experiences
of the study tour. You should discuss what you are thinking and why. Avoid just narrating what
happens during the tour (story-telling) and examine your responses to what has happened (e.g.
why did you find something surprising, interesting, etc)
Communication:
Clear communication is an important part of contributing to any public/ online forum – whether in
textual or visual form. Blog entries will not be assessed in the same way as an academic essay and
may include more personal reactions and more informal language (though no inappropriate/
abusive language will be accepted). Blog entries on the public blog should be readable and their
meaning should be clear to a general reader. Images/visual material should be clearly labelled and
be clearly connected to the study tour themes.
Referencing:
You should provide a label and a source for any images/videos uploaded to the blog (e.g.
Photograph of Sheffield Town Hall, Personal collection, Emma Robertson). If any other materials/
literature are used in your blog (e.g. quotes from reading), an appropriate and consistent system of
referencing (as described in the course notes) should be used.
Plagiarism will be dealt with as a disciplinary issue. By submitting entries to the Blog, students are
confirming that this is their own work.
