MCB 181L IN-LAB QUIZ (XII) NAME:__________________________________________________ Your next lab (Lab13, part II) is going to lead to a report that is worth 10% of your grade in this course. Therefore, I want to make sure you are prepared to this lab before you start your experiment. In the same week (the week of Nov. 26th), you also have to turn in the report for your semester long project (research using the Power Balance Bands). I also want to make sure you will do a good job writing this report. Quiz XI and Quiz XII are designed for these purposes. The following is the rubric for your semester project (also available at the course homepage): MCB 181L IN-LAB QUIZ (XII) NAME:__________________________________________________ 1. (15 points) Read the rubric and describe with your own words what you should write in each of the sections below: (a) Introduction (b) Results (c) References MCB 181L IN-LAB QUIZ (XII) NAME:__________________________________________________ 2. (10 points) What was your hypothesis? 3. (10 points) What was your prediction? 4. (10 points) Did you support your hypothesis? (yes) (no) 5. (15 points) What was your contribution in: (a) Planning the experiment? (b) Collecting data? (c) Writing the report? 6. (10 points) Rank each of the members in your group according to their relative contribution during the whole process (planning, collecting data and writing the report). You can use percentages to represent their contribution and your contribution. 7. (20 points) Define (you may need to use a dictionary, your lab manual or the web): (a) Hypothesis (b) Null hypothesis (c) Inference (d) Conclusion (e) Fallacy (f) Mean and variance 8. (10 points) There are many ways for representing your data. Will you be comparing individuals or groups of individuals? Will you use the average of a sample, or each individual value? In your report, what is the best way to represent this data? (General guidelines here: http://science-fair-coach.com/how-to-graph-data-for-your-science-fair-project/). MCB 181L IN-LAB QUIZ (XII) NAME:__________________________________________________ 9. (no points): if you need to do a statistical analyzes of your data, I recommend this website: http://www.graphpad.com/quickcalcs/ Tip: most likely, you will have continuous data, and will use a t-test. If you are not sure on what test to use, then just compare the graphs (no points will be deducted if you didn’t use a statistical test). In any case, always keep in mind: what can you conclude and what is just (in)consistent with your hypothesis.
