PURPOSE
The objective of the internship in management (MGT 494 or 495) is to provide students with an
opportunity to develop and apply management skills in an organizational setting. The internship
experience offers students the opportunity to synthesize classroom theory and real-life
experience. Through hands-on involvement in various components of an organization's
management functions, students will have the chance to observe and participate in the
development, implementation, and evaluation of managerial policies and procedures in the work
place. In addition to practical work experience, the internship is designed to emphasize the
evaluation skills of participants by means of written reports and analyses of events and
experiences which occurred during the internship. Formal and informal feedback between the
intern, the workplace supervisor, and the faculty supervisor will also enhance the development of
communication skills and investigative, analytical and critical skills necessary to assess
management issues and develop solutions.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
The management internship experience offers students an opportunity to:
1. Develop management and supervisory skills in the application of classroom theory to
practical work situations,
2. Test their interest in, and aptitude for, a particular career before making a permanent job
commitment,
3. Complete management related work (and/or projects) that satisfies organizational needs
and objectives,
4. Enhance interpersonal skills and work habits,
5. Gain insight regarding career options in management, while also helping to more clearly
define personal career goals, and
6. Develop skills related to the process of gaining employment (e.g., resume writing,
interviewing, etc.)

COURSE REQUIREMENTS FOR
MANAGEMENT PROGRAM INTERNSHIPS (MGT 494 and 495)
Course requirements for MGT 494 and MGT 495 include the following:
Monthly Briefings
The student must have contact with the Management Internship Faculty Coordinator on at least a
monthly basis. This contact can be either verbal (phone or face-to-face) or written (e.g., e-mail).
These communications should focus on the student's internship activities and a comparison of
course material and internship experiences. Failure to initiate and maintain monthly contact with
the Management Internship Faculty Coordinator may result in course failure.
Daily Activity Log
The student must maintain a daily log of activities. This is not intended to be a comprehensive
diary. The log should simply list dates and times the student was participating in internship
activities and indicate approximately how much time was spent on each activity.
Student Journal
The student should write 2-3 journal entries each week. These journal entries should provide an
ongoing narrative about the internship experience. Students should include information about the
nature of their daily activities, insights gained from their experiences, achievements, problems or
concerns about the experience, and thoughts about how their work experience relates to their
coursework at JMU. The journal should be an invaluable resource for preparing the final report.
Final Report
The student must submit a written paper discussing the internship experience. This is not merely
a summary of activities. The report should include an introspective examination of the value of
the internship experience and a comparison of the experience in light of materials presented in
classes. The student should also include an evaluation of the educational experience realized
through the internship. The length of the final report should be 10-15 double-spaced pages (with
12-point font and 1-inch margins).
You may want to include answers to the following in your final report.
 What were the best elements of this experience?
 What were the worst elements of this experience?
 What did you learn from the internship that you will take with you into other work
experiences?
 How did the internship relate to your coursework in management?
 With the insight you’ve gained, what would you change about the organization you
worked for? Explain.
 If you could start over, what would you change about your internship experience?
Students are encouraged to create a Work Samples Appendix to their final report that provides
examples of work that was accomplished during the internship. This might include items such as:
memos, reports, screen shots of work done on the computer, meeting minutes, promotional
materials, forms that were updated or revised, etc.
All logs and reports must be typed and submitted in a professional manner.
