Bow Tie analysis can be used for assessing any type of risk, e.g. environmental, safety, business, political, security, etc. and is currently used in a wide range of companies, industries, countries and regulators. The bowtie diagram provides a powerful graphical representation of the risk assessment process which is readily understood by the ‘non-specialist’. The risk assessment technique, Bow Tie Analysis Methodology, is based upon the visually graphic “Swiss Cheese Model” and James Reasons Defense concepts. It was developed in the Netherlands in the 1990’s and combines Fault Trees and Event Trees without quantification. The technique was developed in part as a result of the Piper Alpha disaster. Risk in a Bow Tie methodology is provided by the relationship between the Top Event, Hazards, Threats, and Consequences. Barriers/Safeguards and Controls are used to display what measures or safeguards are in place to control the risk. The Bow Tie method is recommended by the International Association of Drilling Contractors (IADC) for mobile drilling units and is accredited throughout the European Union.
