Unilife Services JCLA COMMUNITY PROJECT INFORMATION Curtin Leadership Centre Email leadership@curtin.edu.au Web curtin.edu.au/curtinleadershipcentre Overview The John Curtin Leadership Academy (JCLA) is Curtin University’s intensive cocurricular leadership program, and is part of the Curtin Leadership Centre. JCLA has been in operation since 2007 and has over 300 graduates. The program develops student’s leadership skills through working with community organisations on projects that benefit the community. We are currently looking to partner with community organisations for our forthcoming Semester 1, 2016 program. We are interested in existing or upcoming projects which JCLA students could work on (and ideally implement) over a three month period, from February to May 2016. The projects should enable students to develop their leadership abilities including amongst other things teamwork, project management, planning and communication skills. Expressions of interest for project proposals should be submitted by: COB Wednesday 2 December 2015. Background The Curtin Leadership Centre was established in 2013. Its aims are to develop socially responsible graduates through providing co-curricular leadership development programs. These programs develop skills that are highly relevant and valued in the workplace and in the community. The Curtin Leadership Centre programs are underpinned by the Social Change Model of Leadership, where leadership is seen as a purposeful, collaborative, values-based process that results in positive social change. For further information regarding the program, please refer to our website: http://life.curtin.edu.au/leadership-and-community/jcla.htm Community Projects We are currently accepting community project proposals which will have a positive benefit to the community, while providing developmental opportunities for students from Australian Registered Charity organisations. The primary purpose of the projects is to provide the opportunity for students to work on a project that addresses a current shortterm problem or to undertake a project that forms part of a larger strategic response to issues the organisation is seeking to address. 106744125 Curtin University is a trademark of Curtin University of Technology. Page 1 of 4 CRICOS Provider Code 00301J (WA), 02637B (NSW) Although one of the outcomes may be generation of funds, we are keen for this not to be the sole focus of the proposed project. For example, projects might involve: Solving a short-term problem that the organisation is facing Generating business/ marketing/project plans Modernising communication strategies using e-media Developing an innovative awareness campaign Hosting a medium size event Students self-select into teams of 5-6 based on their area of interest and select an organisation/project from the list of project proposals that have been received. Projects may be done in close association with your organisation, or alternatively students may work more independently, while still maintaining contact and regular communication with you. Teams have a student mentor for support (a graduate of the program,) and the JCLA coordinator will stay in regular fortnightly contact with you (although we take a hands-off approach with the students). If your organisation is interested in submitting a project proposal to JCLA for consideration, then please complete the Expression of Interest form below. If you require further information, there will be a JCLA Information session on Wednesday 18th November at 9.30am. (Please RSVP by Wednesday 11th November). Please note that not all projects are selected. However we can keep them on file for future intakes (later in the year), or if you have smaller, one off events or programs which require volunteer support, Curtin Volunteers! is a student led organization within Curtin and may be able to connect you with volunteers. Contact Curtin Volunteers! cv@curtin.edu.au or 9266 3954. We can also in some instances (and with your permission) pass your proposal to other areas within the University that provide opportunities for students to undertake projects as part of their course of study.
